EDD PFL processing times in 2025 - claim submitted 3 weeks ago with no payment yet

I filed my Paid Family Leave claim for baby bonding on January 7th (2025) and it's almost February now with no payment in sight. My EDD account just shows 'pending' with no additional info. The website says processing time is 10 business days but I'm going on 3+ weeks now! I took over from my wife who was on pregnancy disability leave (she got her last SDI payment right on schedule). I'm starting to worry because we budgeted based on these payments coming through. Anyone else experiencing delays with their PFL claims right now? What's the actual processing time these days?

5 WEEKS?? I can't wait that long! Did you call them or anything to speed it up?

I'm actually an EDD rep (not official capacity here), and we ARE experiencing significant delays with baby bonding claims right now. There was a system update in late December that's causing processing bottlenecks. Some things that might help: 1) Make sure you completed ALL parts of the DE2508 form correctly 2) Check that your employer verified their portion timely 3) Verify your identity documents are on file from any previous claims If everything is in order, unfortunately it's just a waiting game. Current processing times are averaging 15-20 business days, but some claims are taking up to 6 weeks if there are any issues that require manual review.

Thanks for the insider info! I triple-checked my DE2508 before submitting and my employer confirmed they completed their portion the same week. I did pregnancy disability last year so all my ID docs should be there. Guess I'll just have to be patient... but we were counting on this money for February bills.

I was in the EXACT same boat back in November! Switched from my wife's pregnancy disability to my baby bonding and then... crickets. Called EDD 47 times over 3 days and finally got through. Turns out they needed additional verification from my employer even though everything was supposedly complete. Once I got that sorted, payment came through in 48 hours. DEFINITELY call them - the online status is useless. But be prepared to spend hours redialing because their phone system is a nightmare.

47 calls?! That's insane. Did you just keep hitting redial over and over? I tried calling twice and gave up after being on hold for an hour each time.

Yep, 47 calls across 3 days (I literally kept count because I was so frustrated). My technique was to call right when they opened at 8:00am, and if that didn't work, try again at exactly 12:01pm when the lunch rush was ending. Complete nightmare - I wish there was a better way to reach these people!

Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - saved me HOURS of frustration last week. It's a service that basically waits on hold with EDD for you, then calls you when an agent is ready. I was skeptical but watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5) and decided to try it after spending 2 days trying to get through myself. Got connected to an EDD agent in about 45 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. The EDD agent I spoke with said there's been a huge influx of PFL claims since January and they're struggling to keep up. She was able to expedite my claim once I explained our financial situation.

these kind of services should be illegal... why should we have to pay extra just to access a government service we're entitled to? the whole system is broken if this is the only way to get help

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try this if I don't see movement in my account by the end of the week. Our mortgage is due soon and we really need this payment to come through.

Has anyone else noticed that PFL claims for baby bonding seem to take WAY longer than pregnancy disability claims?? My SDI payments for pregnancy started like clockwork 2 weeks after I applied. But when my husband filed for PFL to bond with our twins, it took over a month!!! And now my sister is having the same experience. What is it about the baby bonding claims that makes EDD drag their feet??? So frustrating because PFL is literally the time when you need the money the most - you have a new baby AND one parent is off work! The system is totally backwards.

You actually hit on something important here. SDI (pregnancy disability) claims and PFL (baby bonding) claims are processed by different departments with different staffing levels. The SDI department is much larger and better staffed. Additionally, PFL claims typically require more verification because they need to confirm the relationship between the claimant and the care recipient, plus bonding claims can be split between parents or taken in increments, creating more administrative complexity.

I just went through this in December! PFL for baby bonding took exactly 22 days to process, and then payments started. But here's what I learned: 1) The transition from pregnancy disability to PFL often causes delays because they're technically different benefits administered by different departments 2) If you filed on January 7th, you're at about 17 business days now (not counting weekends/holidays) 3) If your claim shows as "pending" that actually means it's in the system and just waiting to be processed - if there were issues it would say "additional information needed" Call them if you want peace of mind, but based on current processing times, you're likely to see movement in the next 5-7 days. The first payment often includes backpay from your filing date, so you won't lose any benefits due to their delays.

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't realize the "pending" status actually meant it was okay. That gives me a bit more confidence. I'll give it until the end of the month before I start panicking. Did your first payment include all the backpay?

Yes! My first payment included everything from my claim date forward. Once approved, they're actually pretty good about getting you paid. It's just the initial processing that's painfully slow. Hang in there!

btw make sure u certified for your weeks! my friend thought filing the claim was all u had to do but u still gotta do those bi-weekly certifications just like unemployment or they won't pay u

Wait really? I thought PFL was different from unemployment and you didn't need to certify after the initial claim. Where do you even do that? I don't see that option in my EDD account.

That's actually incorrect information. PFL (Paid Family Leave) for baby bonding does NOT require bi-weekly certifications like unemployment. Once your claim is approved, payments are automatically issued for your approved claim period. You only need to certify for unemployment benefits, not for PFL.
