EDD PFL baby bonding timeline: applied 5 days ago - when to expect approval?
Hey everyone, my husband just submitted his Paid Family Leave application on the 20th to bond with our 6-week-old daughter. This is our first child, and we're trying to plan our finances. His employer already completed their portion through SDI Online. Has anyone applied for baby bonding PFL recently? How long did it take to get approved? The EDD website says 2 weeks processing time but we've heard horror stories about delays. Getting a bit nervous since rent is due next week and we're counting on this income. Also, does anyone know if he'll receive the payment via debit card or direct deposit? We set up direct deposit for my maternity leave but can't remember if it carries over automatically for his PFL claim.

It took exactly 10 days for my husband's baby bonding PFL to get approved after he applied in January 2025. The EDD is actually pretty efficient with the baby bonding claims compared to disability claims. As long as your husband's employer completed their portion correctly and his application didn't have any errors, he should hear back within 2 weeks. The payment method will be the same as what you set up previously - the direct deposit info carries over in their system. Just keep checking his account online daily for updates!

•Thank you so much! That's really reassuring. We'll keep checking his online account. Did your husband get the full 8 weeks approved all at once or did he have to keep certifying?

LOL dont count on anything with EDD!! My husbands baby bonding took almost 5 WEEKS to get approved and we had to eat through our savings!!! Their "2 week" estimate is a JOKE and customer service is nonexistent. They'll probably lose his application and make him reapply. Thats what happened to us. And the stress was AWFUL during an already exhausting time with a newborn!!!

•Omg this is my worst fear. We literally have no savings left after my c-section complications and extended unpaid leave. How did you guys survive with no income for 5 weeks???

The current processing time for PFL baby bonding claims is typically 7-14 calendar days, assuming there are no issues with the application. Here are some factors that could affect processing time: 1. Whether your husband's identity verification is already on file from previous claims 2. The completeness of his application (any missing information will delay processing) 3. Whether his employer submitted their portion correctly 4. Current EDD workload (there's often a backlog after holidays) Regarding payment method, if you already set up direct deposit for your SDI claim, that information will automatically be used for his PFL claim unless he specifically selected a different option. The EDD uses the same payment system for both programs. One thing to note: the first payment might take slightly longer than subsequent payments, so plan accordingly.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! His employer confirmed they submitted everything on their end, so hopefully there won't be any delays. Good to know the direct deposit will carry over automatically.

I just went through this with my partner last month! It took exactly 11 days from application to approval, then another 2 days for the money to hit our bank account. The EDD is actually pretty good with the PFL baby bonding claims right now - I think they've improved their process a lot. But if you're worried, have you tried calling them? I know their phone lines are impossible but I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human at EDD after trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The rep I spoke with was able to tell me exactly where in the process our claim was, which gave us peace of mind. Worth considering if you're really anxious about the timeline!

•Yeah! I was super skeptical but it legit worked. I was on with an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing like I did the previous week. Saved my sanity during a really stressful time.

When I had my baby last summer my husband also did PFL for baby bonding. It took like 9 days to get approved? But then we had a weird issue where they didn't pay him for the first 3 days of his leave because of some waiting period rule we didn't know about. So make sure your husband understands that part! Something about how the first week works. Also congrats on your baby girl! The first few months are so hard but it gets easier I promise!

•Just to clarify, there is no waiting period for PFL baby bonding claims. You might be thinking of SDI/disability claims which do have a 7-day waiting period. PFL pays from day one. If your husband lost 3 days of payment, there might have been an error in his claim dates or how the employer reported his last day worked.

One important tip: make sure your husband logs into his SDI Online account every day to check for any requests for additional information. Sometimes the EDD will request clarification on something, and if you don't respond within 10 days, they'll make a determination without that information, which could result in a denial. The system doesn't always send email notifications when there's a new message or document request in the portal.

•Oh that's a really good point! I didn't realize they might not send email notifications. I'll have him check daily. Would hate to miss something important.

wait isnt there a waiting period before you get paid? i thought you dont get paid for the first week of leave or something

•That's a common misconception. The 7-day waiting period applies to Disability Insurance (DI) claims, including Pregnancy Disability. However, there is NO waiting period for Paid Family Leave (PFL) claims, which includes baby bonding. PFL benefits are payable from the first day of eligible leave.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know my husband's claim was approved today! So it took exactly 9 days from application to approval. We haven't received the payment yet but the online portal shows it as processed. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!
