EDD PFL baby bonding timeline after PDL - applied post-disability in March, how long until approval?
Had my little one back in January (first time mom!) and my pregnancy disability just ended on 3/12. I submitted my PFL claim for baby bonding this past Monday night through the EDD website, but now I'm sitting here refreshing the page like a crazy person! Does anyone know how long approvals are typically taking in 2025? I'm getting anxious because our savings are getting low, and I wasn't expecting this gap between disability ending and baby bonding starting. Also, is there anything else I need to do while waiting? First timer here and totally overwhelmed with both the new baby and all this paperwork!

You just applied Monday? lol give it at least a week before you start panicking! I applied for baby bonding in February after my PDL ended and it took exactly 9 days to get approved. You dont need to do anything else while waiting except maybe check your UI online account every couple days.

•9 days doesn't sound too bad! I'm just so stressed about money right now. Do you know if they backdate the payments to when disability ended or just from when they approve it?

It's currently taking about 10-14 calendar days for most PFL baby bonding claims to process if you filed everything correctly. Since you applied online after your PDL ended, you shouldn't run into any transition issues. Make sure your doctor properly closed out your pregnancy disability claim with an end date of 3/12, and verify your baby bonding PFL claim shows a start date of 3/13 (the day after PDL ended). Yes, they will backdate payments to your first day of PFL eligibility (3/13), not the application date, so you won't lose any benefits due to the processing time. You'll receive the full 8 weeks of baby bonding regardless of when you applied, as long as you filed within your 12-month eligibility window from the birth. Also, don't forget you'll need to complete bi-weekly certifications once your claim is established, just like you did with PDL. Your first certification will likely include multiple weeks.

•This is SO helpful! I have a stupid question though - what if I accidentally put the wrong start date on my PFL application? I think I put 3/15 instead of 3/13 (the day after my PDL ended). Will they fix that automatically or am I going to lose those two days of benefits?

•Oh no, 3 weeks?? That's way longer than I budgeted for! Did they at least backpay you for the whole time since your disability ended?

If you're struggling to get through to an EDD representative about your claim status (which I definitely recommend after about 7-10 days), try using Claimyr. I was in your exact situation in January - baby in November, PDL ended, applied for PFL, and then radio silence for 2 weeks. I kept calling but couldn't get through to anyone. A coworker told me about this service that gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without the crazy wait times. I was skeptical, but I tried claimyr.com and got through to someone in about 20 minutes who fixed my claim issue on the spot. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 My baby bonding payments started the next week. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things moving.

•does this actually work?? im on my second baby and both times ive never been able to get thru to anyone on the phone. its ridiculous that we even need services like this just to access our benefits!!

THE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I applied for baby bonding in February and it took 23 DAYS to get approved!!! They don't care that new parents have bills to pay! I called 37 TIMES in one day and couldn't get through to anyone. Then they had the nerve to tell me there was a "processing delay" when I finally reached someone. And YES they'll backdate to when your disability ended but that doesn't help when you're waiting WEEKS for money to actually hit your account. EDD is the worst government agency I've EVER dealt with!!

•While delays can definitely happen, 10-14 days is still the average processing time for most claims in 2025. The 20+ day waits usually indicate there was some kind of issue with the claim that needed manual review - often something like a mismatch between PDL end date and PFL start date, incomplete documentation, or employer verification delays. For the original poster, if you don't see movement by day 10, I'd recommend calling to check if there are any issues they need additional information for.

congrats on your baby! when i had my daughter last year i remember being so anxious about the money too. it took about 11 days for my baby bonding to get approved but then they sent all the backpay at once which was actually kind of nice to get that lump sum. my best advice is don't watch the pot boil lol... try to enjoy your baby and the money will show up. also make sure your UI online account has all the correct information and that you set up direct deposit if you haven't already!

•Thank you! I definitely need to hear this. I'm checking my account like 5 times a day which I know doesn't help anything. I did set up direct deposit thankfully!

One thing nobody mentioned - make SURE your employer correctly reported your last day worked to EDD. My HR department screwed this up and it caused a 3-week delay because the dates didn't match between what I submitted and what my employer reported. If it takes more than 2 weeks, contact your HR department to make sure they didn't mess anything up on their end.

•That's a really good point. I'll double check with HR tomorrow to make sure everything matches up. Thanks for the tip!

is this your first baby? just a heads up that when u do finally get approved youll need to do those certifications every 2 weeks which is annoying when youre sleep deprived with a newborn lol. set calendar reminders so u dont forget!

•Great point! Many new parents don't realize PFL requires continued certifications. Unlike PDL where your doctor certifies your condition, with baby bonding YOU must certify every two weeks that you're still caring for your child. Missing certifications can cause payment delays or even claim closures.

Just checking back - has your claim been approved yet? If you're getting close to the 2-week mark with no updates, I'd definitely recommend calling.
