EDD Baby Bonding PFL approval timeline - 3+ weeks and still waiting?

My husband applied for baby bonding PFL on June 2nd (so about 3.5 weeks ago) after my maternity disability ended, and we still haven't heard anything! His online account just shows 'pending' with no explanation. We were counting on that money to help with our mortgage payment next week since I'm only working part-time right now. Is this normal for baby bonding approval? His HR said it should only take 1-2 weeks max, but clearly that's not happening. Anyone else experience delays with baby bonding specifically? I'm starting to worry something's wrong with his application.

Totally normal unfortunately. My PFL baby bonding took almost 5 weeks to get approved last year. EDD is SLOWWWW

For baby bonding PFL, the normal processing time is actually 2-3 weeks, but since summer 2024 they've been running behind. Make sure he's checked for any pending identity verification requests or additional documentation needed in his UI Online account. Sometimes they need more info but the notification gets lost in spam or never arrives. He should check the "Notifications" section of his account daily.

Thank you! I just had him check and there's nothing in his notifications tab. No emails either. It just says pending with zero explanation... ugh so frustrating.

has he tried calling? because when i applied for baby bonding last month my claim got stuck in some kind of weird limbo and the only way i found out was by talking to someone. took me like 30 calls to get through tho lol

He's tried calling 6 times now and can't get through! Either gets disconnected or is on hold forever until he has to get back to work. It's so frustrating!

Try early morning calling - like right when they open at 8am. That's the only time I could ever get through when I was dealing with baby bonding issues.

This happened to me and my husband back in April! Turns out our baby's birth certificate info didn't match exactly what was on the application (we had a hyphenated last name issue). It sat in pending for almost a month with no alerts or messages telling us what was wrong. So annoying! Maybe double check all the documentation?

That's a good point about documentation. Our baby has my last name and my husband has his last name... I wonder if that's causing confusion. But wouldn't they at least tell us if that was the problem??

You'd think they would tell you but nope! The EDD seems allergic to clear communication. We only found out because we finally got through to a rep.

The current average processing time for PFL baby bonding claims is 3-4 weeks in 2025, though it can take up to 6 weeks during high-volume periods. If your husband transitioned from SDI to PFL, a few things to check: 1. Make sure he used the DE2508 form specifically for PFL (not the disability form) 2. Check if his employer promptly returned their portion of verification 3. Verify all dates match exactly between forms (birth certificate date, last day worked, etc.) 4. Confirm whether he's claiming the full 8 weeks consecutively or splitting time If you've already waited 3.5 weeks, you're actually within normal timeframes, but reaching an agent can help expedite if there are any issues.

Thank you for the detailed info! He's not transitioning from SDI (that was me, I just finished my maternity disability). He's taking his 8 weeks of baby bonding now that I'm back at work part-time. Everything on the application should be correct... we triple-checked all dates and info. I guess we just need to be patient, but it's so stressful when you're counting on that income!

After numerous failed attempts to reach EDD about my delayed baby bonding claim, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) last month and got through to a rep in about 10 minutes. Turns out there was a simple error on my application that was holding everything up. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. Saved me so much frustration compared to the dozens of calls I had been making trying to get through on my own.

Is that service legit? Seems sketchy that you have to pay just to talk to a government agency we already pay taxes for...

I was skeptical too, but when you're waiting on thousands in benefits and can't get through, the service fee seemed worth it. They just help you skip the phone queue basically. Worked for me when nothing else did.

Yes, we uploaded the birth certificate with the original application. That's why this is so confusing!

One more thing to check - if your husband's employer uses a third-party administrator for leave (like Sedgwick, The Hartford, etc.), sometimes there can be delays in communication between those systems and EDD. In that case, his HR department should be able to confirm if the employer verification was completed properly. Based on what you've shared, it sounds like you're in that frustrating period where it's just slow processing rather than a specific problem - but getting through to a representative is really the only way to confirm that.

His company is pretty small and doesn't use a third party for leave, but that's good to know. I'm hoping it's just slow processing like you said. It's just so anxiety-inducing when you have bills due and don't know when money will arrive!

Completely understand the anxiety! If you do need to reach EDD, besides trying early morning calls, sometimes the disability branch (not the unemployment branch) can answer PFL questions with shorter wait times. The technical crossover between SDI and PFL means those reps can sometimes see and resolve issues.

When my twins were born I applied for baby bonding and it only took 10 days for approval but that was back in January before they got super busy. My sister-in-law just applied in May and hers took almost 5 weeks! So I think summer is just their busy season with more babies and more processing time. Totally get the stress though - we were counting down days for that first payment too!

Update: We finally got through to EDD this morning! Turns out there was a document missing that they never notified us about. They needed my husband's ID verification even though he submitted all the other documents correctly. The rep was able to push it through and said payment should process within 48 hours. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

Glad to hear you got it resolved! This is unfortunately common - the system doesn't always generate notifications for missing documents. For anyone else reading this thread in the future, it's always worth calling if your claim sits in pending status for more than 2-3 weeks with no explanation.

That's great news! And exactly the same thing that happened to us - a missing document with zero notification. The EDD system really needs an upgrade.
