EDD PFL baby bonding stuck in pending status - no updates after a month

I submitted my baby bonding PFL claim online about 4 weeks ago after my son was born, but haven't heard ANYTHING except for that automated 'you created an account' letter. No approval, no denial, not even a request for more info! The online portal just shows 'pending' with no explanation. I'm getting really worried because our savings are running low and I thought this process would be faster. Has anyone else experienced such a long wait time lately? What's considered normal processing time for PFL claims in 2025? Is there something I should be doing to move this along??

normal processing time is like 10-14 days max. something is def wrong with ur claim. do u have a disability claim before this one for pregnancy? sometimes the transition gets stuck if dates dont match up exactly

No, this is just for baby bonding since I'm the dad. My wife had the pregnancy disability claim which was approved super quick. Is there a specific number I should call to check on this? The general EDD line just keeps disconnecting me.

You need to contact EDD directly to find out what's holding up your claim. There are a few common reasons for long PFL delays: 1. Missing information on your application 2. Employer verification issues (they didn't respond or provided conflicting info) 3. Your baby's birth certificate information needs verification 4. System delay due to high volume For baby bonding specifically, make sure you submitted proof of relationship to the child. Since you mentioned you're the father, did you provide the birth certificate or declaration of paternity?

Thanks for this info! I did upload a copy of the birth certificate when I applied. Maybe the quality wasn't good enough? I'll try to get through to EDD again tomorrow.

In my experience, baby bonding claims are taking between 14-21 days right now, but some are definitely getting stuck in the system longer. One thing that could be happening is your employer verification is delayed. Have you checked with your HR department to make sure they received and responded to EDD's request for information? In about 20% of cases I've seen, that's the bottleneck.

That's a good point! I'll call our HR department tomorrow. I assumed they'd handle everything automatically, but maybe they missed something. Really appreciate the suggestion.

I had the EXACT same issue back in January!!!!! Was pulling my hair out because we needed that money. Turns out my employer had 10 DAYS to verify my employment and they were just sitting on it!!! Call your HR immediately!!

Have you tried calling the EDD? I know it's frustrating but sometimes you have to be persistent. I had to call like 57 times before I got through to a real person last month for my maternity leave question. Started calling right when they opened at 8am and finally got through around 9:30.

I've tried calling multiple times but always get disconnected after waiting for 30+ minutes. It's so frustrating! I'll try the 8am approach tomorrow.

I was in a similar situation last month trying to get my PFL claim sorted out after being stuck in pending for weeks. After trying to call EDD dozens of times without success, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days calling. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The agent I spoke with found that there was an issue with my employer verification that was holding everything up. Once that was fixed, my claim was approved within 48 hours and payment came a few days later. Might be worth trying if you're desperate to get through.

Does that service actually work? Sounds too good to be true lol. I've wasted HOURS trying to get through to EDD for my maternity leave questions.

Yeah it worked for me! You still end up talking to the same EDD agents, they just handle the calling part which saved me a ton of time and frustration. The agent I got was really helpful once I explained my situation.

My PFL for my twins took 6 freaking weeks to process!!!! The system is completely broken. I kept calling and they kept saying "it's in process" but wouldn't tell me WHY it was taking so long. By the time it was approved, I had maxed out 2 credit cards. The whole system is a joke!!!

Oh no, 6 weeks?! That's terrifying. We definitely can't wait that long. Did you ever find out what caused the delay?

Nope! Just "processing backlog" was all they would say. Absolutely ridiculous considering these benefits are supposed to help during a critical time. Make sure you document EVERYTHING and keep calling them.

Quick update - I checked with a colleague who processes PFL claims, and he mentioned there's currently a processing backlog for baby bonding claims submitted in the last 6 weeks due to a system update. If your claim falls in this window, that might explain the delay. However, he stressed that you should still contact EDD directly as they may need additional information that isn't showing up on your online portal.

Thank you! This is really helpful context. I'll definitely keep trying to contact them directly.

So did you ever get this resolved? I'm curious what ended up being the issue since so many people seem to be experiencing similar delays.

Yes! Finally got it sorted out yesterday. I managed to get through to EDD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above, and found out there was an issue with my employment verification. My employer had sent incomplete information. Once that was corrected, my claim was processed within 24 hours and payment should arrive next week. What a relief! For anyone else experiencing delays - definitely check if your employer responded properly to EDD's verification request!
