Why is my husband's EDD PFL claim taking so long? Filed last week with no updates

My husband submitted his PFL baby bonding application last Saturday after our son was born. It's been 5 days and there's still no update in the EDD portal - just says 'pending review.' Is this normal? How long does PFL approval usually take these days? This is our first baby and we're stressing about finances since his regular paycheck stops next week. The hospital said everything with his application looked correct, but I'm worried we did something wrong since it's taking forever. Anyone have recent experience with wait times?

Congrats on the new baby! Yep totally normal. My claim from December took like 2 weeks to process. The EDD online system shows 'pending' forever until suddenly one day it's approved lol.

Thank you!! That makes me feel better. Did you get any emails or notifications when it was approved, or did you just have to keep checking the portal?

The standard processing time for PFL baby bonding claims is typically 10-14 calendar days from the date of filing, assuming all documentation is complete and accurate. This timeframe can extend if: 1. Any required documentation is missing 2. Your husband's identity verification requires additional steps 3. The employer response is delayed 4. There's a high volume of claims being processed I recommend checking that the DE-2508F form was fully completed and that his identity verification through [ID.me](ID.me) was successful. Also ensure his employer responded to the EDD's request for information if applicable.

Thank you for all this information! He did the ID.me verification during the application and his HR department confirmed they submitted everything on their end too. I guess we just need to be patient, but it's hard when you're counting on that income!

Unfortunately my PFL claim took 3 weeks to process in January 2025. I called EDD every single day trying to get updates because we were panicking about bills. They're seriously understaffed right now and the system is backed up. But don't worry - if everything was submitted correctly, it WILL be approved and they'll backpay from his leave start date.

3 weeks?? Omg I'd die waiting that long with a newborn and no income. The system is so broken!!!

EDD is ALWAYS slow!! I applied for my baby bonding last year and it took 18 days to approve! Then when I called they said "oh we had a question but nobody contacted you" like??? how am I supposed to know??? The most frustrating part is you can't get through to anyone on the phone - I tried calling FIFTY TWO TIMES over 3 days!!!

This happened to me too!! The wait is ridiculous when you have a newborn and bills to pay! Did you just keep hitting redial or is there a trick to getting through?

After trying for days to reach EDD about my delayed PFL claim, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a real EDD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 My claim had a simple issue they fixed right away - my employer had entered my SSN wrong on their form. Might be worth it if you're really worried and want to check if there's a hold-up with your husband's claim.

Thank you for sharing this! If we don't see movement by Monday I think we'll try this. At least then we'd know if there's a problem or if it's just normal processing time.

Wait so is PFL the same as disability? I'm pregnant and due in August and trying to figure out all this leave stuff. It's so confusing!!!

No, they're different programs, though both are administered by EDD: - Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) through State Disability Insurance (SDI) covers time before birth (typically up to 4 weeks) and recovery after birth (typically 6-8 weeks depending on delivery type) - Paid Family Leave (PFL) provides baby bonding time and typically starts after your disability period ends You'll file for SDI first using form DE-2501, then transition to PFL using form DE-2508 after recovery. They're separate applications but both through EDD.

Quick update for you - I just checked with my husband who filed PFL in February 2025. His claim took exactly 11 days to process. The first week was completely silent, then it suddenly changed from pending to approved. No notifications or anything. Just keep checking the portal daily!

That's super helpful to know! We're on day 6 now, so hopefully we'll see something by the end of next week. Thanks for checking with your husband!
