Maternity disability extension delay - doctor won't confirm EDD forms were sent
Freaking out about my maternity disability extension! My original SDI ran out on 1/15/25, but my doctor approved a 4-week extension at my appt on 1/10. The office made me pay a $25 processing fee and said they'd handle everything. It's been 10 days and NOTHING has happened - my EDD account still shows the message "You have been paid up to your return date. Please contact your doctor to complete certification for an extension." I've called the doctor's office SEVEN times now trying to confirm they sent the form to EDD, but I keep getting voicemail or the receptionist says "someone will call you back" and nobody ever does! I'm so stressed because my mortgage is due next week and I literally have no income coming in right now. Does anyone know what form they're supposed to send? Do I need to fill something out myself? How long should this extension take to process once they receive it? The EDD website is zero help and I can't get through on the phone.

They need to send in a DE2501 Supplemental form for your extension. The doctor's certification is required before EDD will process any additional weeks. Unfortunately, medical offices are notoriously slow with this paperwork, but since you paid the fee, they definitely should have sent it. A few things you can try: 1. Go to the doctor's office in person if possible - harder to ignore you that way 2. Ask specifically for the disability coordinator or office manager 3. Request a copy of the submitted form for your records so you know it was sent Once EDD receives the proper extension certification, it usually takes 7-10 business days to process. The system will update and show your new end date once it's processed.

•Thank you!!! Finally someone with actual info. I'll definitely go in person tomorrow. Is there anything I can do on my end with EDD while I'm waiting? Could I submit something myself to speed things up?

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of! I'm going in first thing tomorrow. It's just so frustrating because I keep explaining how desperate I am for this money and they act like it's no big deal.

I've been through this exact nightmare scenario with my maternity leave extension. When my doctor's office was giving me the runaround, I finally managed to get through to an actual EDD representative using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They connect you directly to an EDD agent without the endless hold times. The EDD rep was able to check their system and confirm they hadn't received any extension paperwork from my doctor yet, which gave me the proof I needed to confront the doctor's office. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 It saved me weeks of back and forth because I could get specific information about what was missing rather than general advice.

•I tried calling EDD for 3 days straight and kept getting disconnected! Is this service actually worth it? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•It was worth it for me because I was able to get actual answers instead of just guessing what went wrong. The EDD rep told me exactly what form was missing and when my doctor finally did submit it, I called again to confirm they received it and to ask how long processing would take.

This is unfortunately a very common problem with disability extensions for maternity leave. I work in HR and see this all the time. Here's what's happening: The doctor needs to submit a DE2501 Supplemental form to certify your continued need for disability beyond the standard post-birth recovery period. The $25 fee you paid is basically an administrative fee for them to complete this paperwork, which is not covered by insurance. Here's what you need to know: 1. The extension won't process automatically - the doctor MUST submit this form 2. EDD cannot accept this form from you directly - it must come from the medical provider 3. You have no visibility into whether it was sent unless you get confirmation from the doctor's office 4. The standard processing time once EDD receives it is 7-10 business days A note of caution: Make sure your extension is truly for disability reasons (physical recovery complications) and not for baby bonding time. These are two separate benefits in California. Once your disability ends, you need to file a separate PFL claim for baby bonding - the extension process doesn't apply to that transition.

•Yes, it's definitely for physical recovery complications - I had a c-section with some healing issues. So the doctor has to fax or mail the form? They can't just call EDD?

•Correct, they must submit the actual form. Most offices fax it, but some use EDD's provider portal. They can't just call - EDD requires the official documentation with the doctor's license number and signature certifying your continued disability. When you go to the office, ask specifically: "Has the DE2501 Supplemental form been submitted to EDD for my disability extension?" Use those exact terms so they know you understand the process.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE US GIVE UP!!!!! i swear EDD and medical offices are in cahoots to wear down new moms until we just collapse. i had similar issues and ended up having to apply for emergency assistance from my county because my disability extension took FIVE WEEKS to finally process even after the doctor sent the paperwork!!!! DOCUMENT EVERYTHING - get names, dates, confirmation numbers. the squeaky wheel gets the grease with these people.

•Five weeks?? Oh my god that's terrifying. I don't have savings to last that long. Did you get backpay for all those weeks at least?

•yes they did backpay eventually but that doesn't help when your bills are due NOW and your credit is getting trashed. call your mortgage company asap and explain the situation - sometimes they can give you a 30 day extension if you have disability paperwork.

Just went through this in December! Doctor's offices are drowning in paperwork and these disability forms often fall to the bottom of their priority list. One thing nobody mentioned - after you get the doctor to submit the form, you'll need to continue certifying for benefits online every two weeks, even while waiting for the extension to be processed. Log into your EDD account and make sure you're still completing the bi-weekly certification forms, otherwise you could miss out on payments even after your extension is approved. Also, start preparing for the transition to Paid Family Leave (baby bonding) after your disability extension ends. That's a completely separate application process with its own form (DE2508) that you'll need to submit personally. Don't wait until your disability ends to start that paperwork!

•Wait, I'm confused. The EDD website won't let me certify because it says I've been paid up to my return date. There's no option to submit a certification. Do I need to do something to make that option appear?

•You're right - you can't certify again until the extension is processed. Once EDD receives and approves the doctor's certification extending your disability period, then the system will update and allow you to certify for those additional weeks. That's why getting the doctor to submit the paperwork is so crucial right now. And yes, this is a frustrating gap in the system that leaves many new moms without income while waiting for paperwork to process. Definitely follow up with your doctor daily until it's confirmed.

UPDATE: You guys are all amazing! I went to the doctor's office this morning and refused to leave until I spoke with the office manager. Turns out they HAD filled out the form but it was sitting in someone's outbox for over a week! The manager apologized and faxed it while I was standing there, and gave me the confirmation page as proof. Now I just have to wait for EDD to process it. Thank you all for the advice and support!

•Great job advocating for yourself! The squeaky wheel definitely gets the grease in these situations. Now just keep an eye on your EDD account - it should update within 7-10 business days to show your new end date. Once that happens, you'll be able to certify for benefits again. Glad it's moving in the right direction!
