How to extend EDD SDI claim when current disability date is approaching?
My disability is supposed to end next week on March 15th, but I honestly don't feel ready to return to work yet (shoulder surgery recovery is taking longer than expected). I need to request an extension but I'm confused about the paperwork process. Do I need to wait for EDD to automatically send me another DE 2501 form around the 10-week mark, or should my doctor be proactively submitting something on my end now that I've discussed extending my leave? I have an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon tomorrow to discuss this, but I want to make sure I understand what paperwork to ask him about. This is my first time on disability and I really can't afford any gaps in my benefit payments if paperwork gets delayed. Anyone gone through this extension process recently?

Your doctor needs to submit a form DE 2525XX (Supplemental Certificate) with a new estimated return date. Don't wait for EDD to send you anything automatically or you might have a gap in benefits. Take the initiative and bring this up at your appointment tomorrow. Ask your doctor to submit the extension certification as soon as possible because there can be processing delays. If your current certification ends before the extension is processed, your payments will pause until it's approved.

•Thank you! I'll definitely ask about the DE 2525XX form specifically. Do you know if my doctor can submit it electronically or does it have to be mailed in? I'm worried about postal delays.

•That's reassuring! Did you have any gap in your benefit payments while the extension was processing?

I'm actually going through this right now with my pregnancy disability claim. My doctor initially certified me for 4 weeks but I developed complications and needed more time. When I called EDD to ask about the extension process, I sat on hold for THREE HOURS and then got disconnected!! So frustrating!!! The next day I tried again and same thing happened. How is anyone supposed to get answers when they make it IMPOSSIBLE to speak to a human being??? The whole system is broken!!!!

•If you're struggling to reach EDD on the phone, try Claimyr.com. It's a service that will connect you directly to an EDD agent without the wait. I was skeptical but used it last month when my doctor submitted my extension paperwork but it wasn't showing up in my online account. They got me through to someone who could actually help. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Definitely worth it for peace of mind when dealing with time-sensitive disability issues.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll check out that site if I can't get through tomorrow. This is stressing me out so much on top of my health issues!

Just wanted to confirm what others have said - your doctor needs to submit the extension before your current disability period ends. I got caught in a gap last year and had to wait 3 weeks for backpay which was super stressful. Also my doctor's office was really slow with paperwork so stay on top of them!

Actually, the form is called DE 2525XX, not to be confused with the initial DE 2501 form. Make sure you're clear with your doctor about which form needs to be completed. If you have SDI Online access, you can also check if there are any forms waiting for you in your inbox. Sometimes EDD will automatically send the extension form if your doctor has already indicated in their system that you need additional time.

•Thanks for the clarification on the form number! I do have SDI Online access, so I'll check there too. I don't see anything in my inbox yet though.

I just went through this with my carpal tunnel recovery. My advice is to have your doctor submit the new certification at LEAST 7-10 days before your current claim ends. When I did my extension in January, it took about 5 business days to process the new claim dates, but I've heard it can sometimes take up to two weeks. Also, something nobody mentioned - you may need to complete a new DE 2501 form (not just your doctor). At least that was my experience. I had to fill out my portion again and then have my doctor complete their section with the new dates. The form was identical to the original one I submitted when I first applied for disability.

•That's odd - for a standard extension, typically only the doctor needs to submit the DE 2525XX. You shouldn't need to submit an entirely new DE 2501 unless your claim had actually closed and you were filing a new one. The disability extension process should be more streamlined than that. Did your original claim fully expire before the extension was requested?

•You know what, you might be right. I think in my case, there was a 3-day gap between my original end date and when my doctor submitted the new paperwork. That might be why I had to do the whole process again. So that's another reason to make sure the extension is submitted BEFORE the current claim ends!

My sister had to extend her claim twice for her back surgery recovery and the whole thing was a nightmare both times lol. EDD lost her paperwork once and then the second time they kept sending her confusing letters about needing more medical info. Just be prepared that even if you do everything right it might still get messed up! 🤦♀️

•Oh no, that sounds stressful! Did she eventually get everything sorted out? Any tips for avoiding those kinds of problems?

•yeah she did! she started taking photos of EVERY piece of paper she sent them and wrote down dates and names of everyone she talked to. smart!

Just a follow-up point: make sure your doctor understands that the extension needs to be continuous with your current disability period. If there's even a 1-day gap between your current end date and the new start date on the extension, EDD may treat it as a new claim rather than an extension, which requires more paperwork and a new waiting period. This is a common mistake doctors make when filling out the extension certification.

•That's really helpful information! I didn't realize that could happen. I'll definitely make sure my doctor understands that the dates need to be continuous. I definitely don't want to deal with another waiting period.

•Yes! I saw my doctor yesterday and he submitted the DE 2525XX form electronically right from his office. He extended my disability for another 4 weeks. The nurse said it should process in about 5 business days, so I should know by next week if it's approved. Fingers crossed there's no gap in payments!

That's great to hear it worked out smoothly! For anyone else reading this thread, I just wanted to add that you can also track the status of your extension online through SDI Online. Once your doctor submits the DE 2525XX form, it usually shows up in your account within 1-2 business days as "pending review" before it gets fully processed. This helped me stay on top of things when I extended my claim for knee surgery recovery last year. The online portal is really helpful for peace of mind while waiting for approval!

•Thanks for mentioning the online tracking! I just checked my SDI Online account and I can see the extension request is already showing as "pending review" - that's such a relief to know it's in the system. I had no idea you could track it that way. This whole process has been way less scary than I thought it would be thanks to everyone's advice here!

I'm so glad to see this thread because I'm in a similar situation! My wrist surgery recovery is taking longer than expected and my current disability period ends next Friday. Reading everyone's experiences has been really helpful - I had no idea about the DE 2525XX form or that doctors could submit it electronically. I'm calling my orthopedic surgeon's office first thing Monday morning to make sure they get the extension paperwork submitted before my current claim expires. It's such a relief to know that if done properly, there shouldn't be any gap in benefits. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and tips!

•You're doing the right thing by calling Monday morning! Just make sure to emphasize to your doctor's office that it needs to be submitted BEFORE Friday when your current claim ends. If they can submit it electronically like Alberto's doctor did, that's even better for timing. Also, once it's submitted, definitely check your SDI Online account to confirm it shows up as "pending review" - that way you'll know it made it into the system. Good luck with your recovery!

Just wanted to add another tip that helped me during my extension process - if your doctor's office is slow with paperwork (which seems pretty common), you can actually ask them to fax the DE 2525XX form directly to EDD while you're still at your appointment. Most medical offices have fax capabilities and this ensures it gets submitted immediately rather than sitting in their outgoing mail pile for days. When I extended my disability for rotator cuff surgery complications, my doctor's assistant faxed it right from the exam room and I had confirmation it was received within hours. This might be worth asking about at your appointment to avoid any last-minute stress about timing!

•That's such a smart tip about faxing directly from the appointment! I never would have thought to ask about that. It makes total sense to handle it right there instead of trusting it to get mailed out later. I'm definitely going to suggest this to my doctor tomorrow - especially since my current claim ends so soon. Thanks for sharing that experience! It's amazing how these little details can make such a big difference in avoiding gaps in benefits.

I'm currently dealing with a similar extension situation for my herniated disc recovery! One thing that really helped me was asking my doctor's office for a copy of the DE 2525XX form they submitted so I have it for my records. They were able to print me a copy right after they faxed it to EDD. This way I have proof of exactly what dates were requested and when it was submitted in case there are any issues later. Also, I learned that some doctor's offices will call EDD directly to confirm the form was received - mine did this and it gave me huge peace of mind. It's worth asking if your doctor's office offers this service since phone wait times can be brutal when you're trying to call yourself. The whole extension process is definitely nerve-wracking when you're already dealing with health issues, but it sounds like you're being proactive about it which is the key!

•That's excellent advice about getting a copy of the submitted form! I hadn't thought about asking for documentation, but you're absolutely right - having that proof could be really important if there are any processing issues. I'm definitely going to request a copy when my doctor submits my extension. It's also great to know that some offices will call EDD to confirm receipt. I'll ask about that too since the phone wait times are so notorious. Thanks for sharing these practical tips - it really helps to hear from someone who's currently going through the same process!
