EDD SDI disability extension process - does my doctor file it or do I need to submit something?

Hoping someone can clarify the extension process for CA disability. My doctor just told me I need to stay off work for another 8 weeks (recovering from major back surgery). My original SDI claim is set to expire next Friday. Does my doctor submit the extension paperwork directly to EDD, or do I need to file a new claim/extension myself? I'm really confused about what happens next and don't want to miss any payments. Last time I tried calling EDD I gave up after waiting on hold for 2+ hours! I've already been stressing about bills and don't want to mess this up. Thanks for any help!

Both u and ur dr need to do stuff. You gotta submit the continued claim certification and ur dr needs to submit the updated medical info. Check ur online acct for forms to fill out.

Thanks! So there's a specific continued claim form I need to fill out? Is it different from the regular certification? I don't see anything about extensions in my online account yet.

The extension process for SDI requires action from both you and your physician. Here's what needs to happen: 1. Your doctor needs to complete a Supplemental Medical Certificate (DE 2525XX) certifying your continuing disability 2. You need to complete a Claim for Continued Disability Benefits form (DE 2500A) which should arrive by mail about a week before your current benefit period ends If you don't receive the DE 2500A form, you can request one by messaging EDD through your SDI Online account. The most common mistake people make is waiting until after their benefits end - you want to submit everything 5-7 days before your current claim expires. Your doctor can submit their certification electronically through SDI Online if they're registered, or by mail if they prefer paper forms. Make sure they include your claim ID on everything they submit.

Thank you SO much for the detailed explanation! I'll contact my doctor's office tomorrow and make sure they're submitting the Supplemental Medical Certificate. I haven't received the DE 2500A form yet - should I be worried? My benefits end next Friday.

I just went through this last month! Was so confused too. My doctor had to do his part and I had to do mine. The timing was super stressful tho cuz there was like a 2 week gap where I didn't get paid while they processed everything. Hope you have some savings to cover that!

This is why the EDD system is so FRUSTRATING!! Why should there be a gap in payments when you have a legitimate medical need for extension?? It's the same disability continuing! They make everything so complicated on purpose I swear. I had to call 48 TIMES to get my extension processed correctly last year.

If you're having trouble getting through to EDD (and let's face it, who isn't?), I'd recommend checking out Claimyr. They helped me get through to a real person at EDD within 20 minutes when I was dealing with my disability extension issues. Their system holds your place in line so you don't have to do the endless redial thing. Saved me so much stress! There's a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd or you can go to claimyr.com. Getting an actual EDD rep to confirm my extension was being processed correctly was worth every penny.

Does this actually work for SDI too? I thought it was just for unemployment claims? Has anyone else used this for disability specifically?

0 coins

Yes, it works for SDI too! When you call through their service, you get in the regular EDD queue but without having to deal with the constant busy signals and hangups. I specifically used it for my disability extension questions and got through to someone who could see my account and verify everything.

My sister had her disability extended twice for her pregnancy complications and I think she just had her doctor send in forms? But that was for pregnancy so maybe different rules apply idk sorry not much help

You're partially right. Pregnancy disability and regular SDI extensions follow similar processes, but there are some differences. With pregnancy disability, additional documentation about estimated delivery date and recovery periods is required. The basic extension process (doctor's certification + claimant's continued claim form) is the same for both.

Make sure you stay on top of your doctor!! My physician's office forgot to submit my extension paperwork and my benefits stopped for nearly 3 weeks. I had to make multiple calls and even had to get a supervisor at the medical office involved to get everything submitted correctly. Don't assume they'll handle it automatically - be proactive and confirm submission dates and follow up until you see the extension reflected in your SDI Online account.

That's really good advice, thank you! I'll call my doctor again tomorrow and make sure they have all the info they need. My back specialist has a separate office from my regular doctor - should the extension come from my specialist or primary care?

The extension should come from whichever doctor is actively treating you for the condition that's keeping you disabled. Since you mentioned back surgery recovery, it sounds like that would be your specialist. They need to be the ones to certify that you still cannot perform your regular work duties.

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD! The rep confirmed I need to complete a DE 2500A form (which should arrive in the mail soon) AND my doctor needs to submit a Supplemental Medical Certificate. She said if I don't receive the form by Monday, I should message them through my SDI Online account to request one. Thank you all for your help!

Awesome! Glad you got the info you needed! Hope your back heals up soon!

Great to see you got through to EDD and have clarity on next steps! Just a heads up - when you submit your DE 2500A form, make sure to keep a copy for your records and consider sending it certified mail if you're mailing it in. That way you have proof of delivery. Also, double-check that your doctor includes your SDI claim number on their Supplemental Medical Certificate - missing that detail can cause processing delays. Wishing you a smooth recovery from your back surgery!

This is such helpful advice! I never would have thought about sending it certified mail - that's really smart. I'll definitely make sure my doctor's office has my claim number too. It's reassuring to know there are people here who understand how tricky this process can be. Thank you for taking the time to share these tips!

I went through this exact same situation after my knee surgery last year! One thing that really helped me was setting up alerts in my SDI Online account so I could track when forms were submitted and processed. Also, if your doctor's office is slow with paperwork (like mine was), you can actually download the Supplemental Medical Certificate form from the EDD website and bring it to your appointment pre-filled with your claim info. That way they just need to complete the medical portion and submit it. Saved me a week of back-and-forth! Hope your recovery goes smoothly and you don't have any payment gaps.

This is such great practical advice! I had no idea you could download and pre-fill the forms yourself - that would definitely save time dealing with busy medical offices. Setting up alerts is brilliant too. I'm still pretty new to navigating all this SDI stuff, so tips like these are incredibly helpful. Did you find the online tracking was pretty accurate, or did you still need to call EDD to verify things were being processed?

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else who might be going through this - I recently had to do an SDI extension after shoulder surgery and one thing that really caught me off guard was the timing. Even when you submit everything correctly and on time, there can still be a processing delay of 7-10 business days. I'd recommend having at least 2-3 weeks of expenses saved up just in case there's a gap in payments. Also, if you're using any prescription pain medications for your recovery, make sure your doctor mentions that in their medical certification - EDD sometimes questions whether people on certain medications can actually work, and having it documented upfront prevents complications. The whole process is stressful enough without worrying about finances on top of healing!

This is really valuable information about the processing delays and having financial backup ready! I'm dealing with back surgery recovery right now and hadn't thought about the prescription medication documentation - that's a great point. My doctor prescribed muscle relaxers and pain meds for the recovery period, so I'll definitely make sure they include that detail in the medical certification. It's so helpful to hear from people who've actually been through this process recently. The financial stress on top of recovering from surgery is no joke, so knowing to expect potential delays helps me plan better. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I'm currently going through this same process after my hip replacement surgery. One thing I learned the hard way - make sure to check if your doctor's office is set up for electronic submission through SDI Online. My orthopedic surgeon's office wasn't registered for electronic filing, so they had to mail the paper forms which added extra processing time. If your doctor isn't set up electronically, I'd suggest asking them to submit everything at least 10 days before your current benefits expire rather than the usual 5-7 days. Also, don't forget to keep certifying for benefits every two weeks even while your extension is being processed - I almost missed a certification period because I thought I had to wait for the extension approval first. The EDD rep told me that's a common mistake that can really mess up your payments. Hang in there, the back surgery recovery is tough but you'll get through it!

This is incredibly helpful timing advice! I hadn't thought about whether my doctor's office does electronic vs. paper submission - that could definitely make a difference in processing time. I'll call them first thing Monday to check on their submission method and make sure they understand the timeline. The tip about continuing to certify every two weeks during processing is huge - I probably would have made that exact mistake and stopped certifying while waiting for approval. It's so reassuring to connect with others who've navigated this same situation with major surgeries. The recovery process is challenging enough without having to worry about benefit interruptions. Thanks for sharing these practical insights from your hip replacement experience!

Great point about the electronic vs paper submission! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now and my doctor's office is definitely old school with paper forms. I'll make sure to give them extra time. The tip about continuing to certify is a lifesaver - I was totally going to stop doing that thinking I had to wait for the extension approval. It's amazing how many little details can trip you up with this process. Hope your hip replacement recovery is going well! These major surgeries are no joke but it sounds like you've got the EDD side figured out at least.

I'm so glad you were able to get through to EDD and get clarity on the process! As someone who's been through multiple SDI extensions, I can't stress enough how important it is to stay on top of both parts - your DE 2500A form AND making sure your doctor submits that Supplemental Medical Certificate on time. One tip that saved me during my last extension: create a simple checklist with dates for when you submitted your form, when your doctor submitted theirs, and when you expect to see updates in your SDI Online account. That way you can follow up quickly if something gets delayed. Back surgery recovery is tough enough without the added stress of navigating EDD - wishing you a smooth healing process and no payment interruptions!

This checklist idea is brilliant! I'm definitely going to create one to track everything - having those dates and deadlines written down will help me stay organized during recovery when I'm not thinking as clearly. It's really encouraging to hear from someone who's successfully navigated multiple extensions. The back surgery recovery has been more challenging than I expected, both physically and dealing with all the paperwork, so knowing there are people here who understand the process makes such a difference. Thank you for the well wishes and practical advice!
