EDD SDI extension process - what happens after doctor extends disability?
Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of a confusing situation with my husband's disability claim. He's been on SDI for the past 11 weeks (lower back injury from a work accident), and his doctor just decided to extend his disability period for another 8 weeks since he's not healing as quickly as expected. We've already received the doctor's certification through the mail saying he filled out his part, but I'm confused about what WE need to do now. Does my husband need to submit a new claim or something on his end? Or does the doctor's certification automatically extend his payments? The EDD website is so confusing and we've been calling for 3 days with no luck getting through. I don't want his payments to stop because we messed something up on our end! Thanks for any help.

The dr should have filed the extension paperwork already if they mailed you a copy. Check your online EDD account for updates, sometimes takes a few days to appear in the system. You shouldnt need to do anything else.

•Thanks! We've been checking his online account but nothing new shows up yet. It's been 5 days since the doctor said he submitted it. Should we be worried?

Based on my experience with EDD SDI extensions last year, your husband doesn't need to file a new claim, but he DOES need to complete a "Claim for Continued Disability Benefits" form (DE 2500A) to maintain his certification. His doctor might have already submitted the medical extension documentation, but the claimant still has to certify for additional benefits. Check his SDI Online account and look under "Forms" to see if there's a continued claim form waiting to be completed. You can also check under "Claim History" to see the updated claim period once the extension is processed. The doctor's part and your husband's part are separate processes that both need to happen.

•This is exactly what I needed to know! I just checked and there IS a form under the Forms section that we missed. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Did they eventually fix it for you? How long did it take once you got through?

•yeah they fixed it but took 10 days to get my payment. they said i was supposed to do the continued claim form thing the other person mentioned. wish they would make this clearer!!!

I used to work at a medical office that handled a lot of SDI paperwork, so I can tell you exactly what's happening. The doctor submits what's called a "supplemental certification" when extending disability, but that alone doesn't complete the process. For an extension, these TWO things need to happen: 1. Doctor submits the medical extension certification (sounds like this is done) 2. Claimant needs to complete a DE 2500A form (Continued Claim Certification) You mentioned he's been on disability for 11 weeks, so he's definitely already certified for benefits at least twice (they're generally done in 2-week increments). The extension process uses the same certification form, but the dates will now extend beyond the original estimated recovery date. Check his SDI Online account for the form, or if it's not there, he can call EDD to request one be generated. The safest approach is to be proactive rather than waiting.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! That makes a lot more sense now. We found the form online and he's going to submit it today. One quick question - do we need to wait for them to approve the doctor's extension before he submits the continued claim form, or should he do it right away?

•Submit it right away! The two parts are processed separately but need to both be in the system. Don't wait or you might experience a gap in payments. They'll match up his continued claim with the doctor's extension once both are in the system.

EDD is THE WORST with communication!!! When my disability got extended last year they never told me I had to keep certifying and I lost 3 weeks of payments that I NEVER got back despite multiple appeals. Make sure your husband keeps certifying EVERY TWO WEEKS without fail even if the doctor part is delayed!!

•That's terrible! I'm sorry that happened to you. Thanks for the warning - we're definitely going to stay on top of the certifications now.

I've been through several disability extensions myself, and getting through to EDD when there's a problem can be absolutely maddening. I spent weeks trying to reach someone when my extension was pending. If you're still having trouble reaching EDD after trying what others suggested, I finally had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that connects you with an EDD representative usually within 10-20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd It was worth it for me because I needed to confirm my extension was properly processed, and waiting weeks wasn't an option with bills due. The peace of mind knowing everything was properly filed was invaluable.

•Thank you for this suggestion! If we have any issues with the extension processing, I'll definitely look into this. The video is helpful to understand how it works.

•is that service legit? seems sketchy that you have to pay to talk to edd when its a government service we already pay for with our taxes...

•I was skeptical too at first, but they just help you bypass the phone queue - you still talk directly to actual EDD representatives. After spending literally days trying to get through on my own, it was worth it for me. But hopefully OP won't need it if the online form submission works properly.

Just wanted to add a quick note about extensions - make sure your husband continues submitting his certification forms even if there's a delay processing the doctor's extension. If the doctor's extension is approved, but they don't have your husband's certification forms, they can't issue payments. Also, once the extension is processed, check that the new end date in the system matches what the doctor intended. Sometimes there are discrepancies that can cause payment issues down the line.

•Thank you! That's a good tip about checking the end date. Where exactly in the SDI Online system would we see the updated end date once it's processed?

Christian Bierman
•Look under "Claim Details" or "Claim Summary" in his SDI Online account. There should be a section that shows the "Benefit Period" with start and end dates. After the extension is processed, the end date should reflect the new extended recovery date from his doctor.

this happened to me but with pregnancy disability. got extended from 6 weeks to 8 weeks and thought the doctor did everything. ended up with no payment for the extra 2 weeks because i didn't know i had to certify! the doctor part and your part are separate things - make sure you do both!!

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your help! We found the continued claim form in his SDI Online account and submitted it today. The doctor's extension hasn't appeared in the system yet, but we'll keep checking daily. I've also made a calendar reminder for the next certification period so we don't miss it. Will update again once we know if the payments continue smoothly!

•Great! You're on the right track. If the extension doesn't appear in the system within a week, I'd recommend calling EDD to confirm they received it. Better to be proactive than to wait and potentially have a payment gap.

So glad you got this sorted out! I went through a similar situation last year with my disability extension and it was really stressful not knowing what to do. The key thing I learned is that EDD processes the doctor's medical certification and your continued claim certification as two separate workflows that need to both be completed. One thing to keep in mind - if for some reason there's still a delay in processing after a week or so, don't panic. Sometimes there can be a brief gap in payments while they sync everything up, but they'll backpay you once it's all processed. Just make sure to keep submitting those bi-weekly certifications on schedule even if you don't see the extension reflected in the system yet. Hope your husband's recovery goes smoothly and the payments continue without any hiccups!

•Thank you for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear that the backpay thing is normal if there's a processing delay. We're definitely going to stay on top of those bi-weekly certifications - seems like that's the most important thing to avoid any major issues. Really appreciate everyone's help in this thread, you've all been so much more helpful than the EDD website!

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - my disability got extended by my doctor 2 weeks ago but I'm still waiting to see it reflected in my SDI account. This thread has been super helpful! I had no idea about the DE 2500A form requirement. One question for those who've been through this - if the doctor's extension and the continued claim form are submitted but there's still no update in the system after a week, is it better to call EDD or wait a bit longer? I'm worried about calling too early and clogging up their phone lines, but also don't want to miss any deadlines. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences here - this community is way more informative than any official EDD resource!

•Hey Jace! I'd say give it the full week before calling - that seems to be the consensus from what I've read here. From what others have shared, it sounds like EDD's system can take 5-7 business days to sync up the doctor's extension with your continued claim form. If it's been exactly a week with no updates in your account, then definitely call. That way you're not calling prematurely but also not waiting so long that you risk missing something important. Hope yours processes smoothly!

I'm going through my first disability extension right now and this thread has been incredibly helpful! My doctor submitted the extension paperwork last week but I had no idea I needed to complete anything on my end until reading this. Just logged into my SDI Online account and sure enough, there's a DE 2500A form waiting for me that I completely missed. One thing I'm curious about - for those who've done extensions before, does EDD send any kind of notification (email or mail) when the continued claim form becomes available, or do you just have to keep checking your online account? I've been religiously checking for updates on the doctor's extension but totally overlooked the Forms section. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - you've potentially saved me from a major payment gap!

•Hey Lena! From my experience, EDD doesn't always send notifications when the continued claim form becomes available - they expect you to check your online account regularly. That's part of why so many people miss it! I'd recommend checking the Forms section of your SDI Online account at least every few days, especially during extension periods. Some people set calendar reminders to check weekly. It's frustrating that they don't make this clearer, but at least you found it now before missing any payments!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who's been through multiple disability extensions over the past few years. This thread is spot-on about the two-part process - doctor's medical certification AND your continued claim form (DE 2500A). One thing I've learned is to screenshot or print your confirmation page when you submit the DE 2500A form online. EDD's system sometimes has glitches and it's helpful to have proof you submitted it on time if there are any payment delays later. Also, if anyone is having trouble finding the continued claim form in their SDI Online account, try logging out completely and logging back in. Sometimes the Forms section doesn't refresh properly and you need to force it to update. Hope everyone gets their extensions processed smoothly! The stress of dealing with EDD bureaucracy while you're trying to recover from an injury is really tough.

•That's such a smart tip about taking screenshots of the confirmation page! I never would have thought of that but it makes total sense given how glitchy government systems can be. I'm definitely going to do that from now on. The logging out and back in tip is also really helpful - I've noticed my SDI account sometimes seems "stuck" on old information until I refresh everything. Thanks for sharing these practical tips from your experience!

I just went through this exact same situation a few months ago! The confusion is totally understandable because EDD doesn't make the process clear at all. From my experience, here's what needs to happen: 1. Your husband's doctor submits the medical extension (sounds like this is done based on the copy you received) 2. Your husband needs to complete the DE 2500A "Claim for Continued Disability Benefits" form in his SDI Online account 3. He needs to keep doing his regular bi-weekly certifications without interruption The doctor's part and your husband's part are processed separately by EDD, so even though the doctor sent their paperwork, your husband still has his own steps to complete. Check the "Forms" section of his SDI Online account - there's likely a continued claim form waiting there. Don't wait for the doctor's extension to show up in the system before submitting the continued claim form. Submit it right away! The two parts will sync up on EDD's end once they process both. Keep certifying every two weeks no matter what - that's the most important thing to avoid payment gaps. Good luck with everything, and I hope your husband's recovery goes well!

•This is such a comprehensive breakdown, thank you! I'm new to dealing with SDI extensions and this whole thread has been incredibly educational. Your step-by-step explanation really helps clarify the process. I'm saving this for future reference since it sounds like extensions can be a recurring thing if recovery takes longer than expected. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't provide this kind of clear guidance anywhere on their official channels - this community is so much more helpful than their actual website!

I'm dealing with a similar extension situation right now and this thread has been incredibly helpful! My doctor just extended my disability for an additional 6 weeks, and like many others here, I had no idea about the DE 2500A continued claim form requirement until reading all these responses. One thing I want to add based on my experience so far - when you're checking your SDI Online account for the continued claim form, make sure you're looking in the right place. I initially kept checking under "Claim Status" but the form was actually under a separate "Forms" tab that I completely missed for several days. Also, for anyone else going through this process, I found it helpful to call EDD early in the morning (around 8am) when the phone lines first open. While it's still difficult to get through, I had better luck than calling later in the day. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this community knowledge is invaluable when dealing with EDD's confusing system!

•This is really helpful advice about checking the right section for the forms! I've been dealing with EDD for my own disability claim and their website navigation is honestly terrible - it's so easy to miss important stuff when it's buried in different tabs. Your tip about calling at 8am is smart too. I tried calling around lunchtime a few times and could never get through. It's crazy that we have to rely on community forums like this to figure out basic processes that should be clearly explained on their official website. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm currently going through my first disability extension and this thread has been a lifesaver! My doctor submitted the extension paperwork two weeks ago but I had no clue about the DE 2500A form until reading everyone's responses here. Just checked my SDI Online account and found the continued claim form sitting there waiting for me. One question for those who've been through this process - after submitting both the doctor's extension and the DE 2500A form, roughly how long did it take for your online account to show the updated benefit period dates? I submitted my continued claim form yesterday but my account still shows the original end date. Just want to make sure I have realistic expectations for when I should start worrying if nothing updates. Also wanted to echo what others have said - the EDD website is absolutely terrible at explaining this process clearly. This community discussion has been more informative than hours of searching their official resources. Really grateful for everyone sharing their experiences!
