How to request SDI extension when original claim was less than 8 weeks?

Really stressing out about my disability extension! I was put on disability for severe sciatica for just 7 weeks initially (my doctor thought I'd recover faster). My last payment is coming up, but I'm nowhere near ready to go back to work - the pain is still unbearable when sitting for more than 20 minutes. My doctor agrees I need at least another 4-6 weeks, but when I asked about the extension process, I was told that EDD doesn't automatically send extension forms for claims under 8 weeks? I've called EDD about 30 times over 3 days and can't get through to anyone. Do I need to file a whole new claim or is there a specific extension form I need to request? Has anyone dealt with this situation before? I'm panicking because I absolutely cannot return to work yet and I can't afford to miss payments!

You don't need to panic! There's a specific process for this. Your doctor needs to complete a 'Supplemental Certification' form (DE 2525XX). Since your initial claim was less than 8 weeks, you're right that EDD doesn't automatically send this form. You have two options: 1. Ask your doctor's office to download and complete the form from the EDD website 2. Call EDD and specifically request they mail the Supplemental Certification form to either you or your doctor The important thing is that this form should be submitted BEFORE your current disability period ends. If there's any gap, it could cause problems with your benefits.

Thank you! I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow and let them know about this form. Do you know if there's any specific section of the EDD website where they can find it? My doctor's office isn't always the most tech-savvy...

Went thru this exact thing last yr. So frustrating!! My dr had to submit a new form, but the trick is it HAS TO be done before ur current disability period ends or you'll have to start a whole new claim which is a NIGHTMARE. trust me.

Oh god, I'm glad you warned me! My current disability period ends next Tuesday. Do you think that's enough time to get everything submitted? I'm worried my doctor's office will take forever to complete the paperwork.

Call ur dr office TODAY and tell them its urgent. If they're decent they'll help u. Better yet go in person if u can handle it with ur pain. Bring the form # with u.

I had this same issue with my pregnancy disability claim that turned into a longer leave due to complications. After trying the EDD phone number for days without success, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a service that gets you through to a live person without the endless redials. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I got through, the rep explained that I needed form DE 2525XX (Supplemental Certification) and they sent it directly to my doctor. Much easier than trying to navigate everything myself. The extension was approved within a week after my doctor submitted it.

This sounds like it might save me a lot of stress! Did you have to provide a lot of personal info to use this service? And once you got through to EDD, were they helpful with the extension process?

The process was pretty straightforward. They just need enough info to connect your call. Once I got through to EDD, the rep walked me through everything. They confirmed exactly what form I needed and offered to send it directly to my doctor's office. The rep also noted in my file that an extension was coming so there wouldn't be issues with payment continuity. Definitely worth it rather than spending days trying to get through.

I HATE how EDD makes this so confusing!!! When I was on disability last year they told me one thing, then did another thing, then blamed ME for the confusion. The whole system is designed to exhaust people into giving up. I had to file an appeal just to get what I was entitled to all along. HEREʼS WHAT THEY DONʼT TELL YOU: there are different extension processes depending on if your original claim was more or less than 8 weeks. AND the forms have similar names but different purposes. AND some doctors donʼt know the difference. AND if you get the wrong form or miss the deadline by even one day, you're screwed. Iʼm still angry about how I was treated. 😡

Right?? The whole system seems designed to make people give up. My cousin works for a doctor's office and says they get confused by all the different SDI forms too!

That sounds horrible! Did you eventually get your extension approved? I'm worried because my doctor isn't very familiar with all these EDD forms either.

hey my situation was kinda similar but for my broken ankle last month. what worked for me was having my doctor fax the new form directly to edd. they have a special fax number just for medical docs. my doc's office said they do this all the time and it's faster than mailing. no problems with my extension after that.

Thanks for the tip about faxing! Do you happen to remember if your doctor used a specific form number? Was it the DE 2525XX that others mentioned?

To follow up with more specific details: 1. The exact form you need is "Doctor's Certificate of Continued Disability" (DE 2525XX) 2. Your doctor can find it here: https://edd.ca.gov/en/disability/How_to_File_a_DI_Claim_by_Mail/ (under Forms) 3. For extensions, timing is critical - must be filed before your current disability period ends 4. The doctor needs to indicate the new anticipated recovery date 5. Make sure your doctor includes your current claim ID number on the form If you're still having trouble reaching EDD, consider asking your doctor's office if they have a disability case manager who regularly deals with EDD. They often have direct lines or contacts.

Thank you so much for these detailed instructions! I just called my doctor's office and left a message explaining everything. The receptionist said they deal with EDD extensions regularly, so I'm feeling much more hopeful now.

When I had my back surgery last year my doctor filed for an extension incorrectly at first and it caused a 3-week gap in my payments which was absolutely devastating financially. Make absolutely sure your doctor files the correct form BEFORE your current disability period ends. I cannot stress this enough. The EDD website doesn't make this clear at all and even some doctors' offices get confused about which form to use for extensions versus new claims.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Did you eventually get back pay for those missed weeks? I'm definitely going to double and triple check that my doctor submits the right form in time.

Yes, but it took another 6 weeks and dozens of phone calls to sort out. I had to borrow money from family to pay rent during that time. The key difference is that a new claim requires a 7-day waiting period with no benefits, while an extension continues without a new waiting period. That's why getting the extension filed correctly is so important financially.

UPDATE: I wanted to thank everyone for their help! I took everyone's advice and: 1. Called my doctor's office immediately and explained the situation 2. Used Claimyr to finally reach an EDD rep (after 40+ failed calls on my own) 3. The EDD rep confirmed I needed the DE 2525XX form and sent one directly to my doctor 4. My doctor completed it the same day and faxed it back to EDD The EDD rep also noted in my file that an extension was coming so there wouldn't be any payment gap. I just checked my SDI Online account and can see the extension has been processed! So relieved right now. This community saved me from what could have been a financial disaster.

Fantastic news! I'm so glad it worked out smoothly for you. These systems can be challenging to navigate, but it sounds like you did everything exactly right. Hope your recovery continues to go well!

So happy to see your update with good news! This thread is going to be really helpful for anyone else dealing with the same situation. The step-by-step process you followed should be bookmarked - calling the doctor immediately, using a service to actually reach EDD, and making sure the right form gets submitted before the deadline. It's crazy that we have to jump through so many hoops for something that should be straightforward, but at least now others will know exactly what to do. Hope your sciatica continues to improve and you can get back to work when you're truly ready!

Yes, this thread is going to be so valuable for others! I'm bookmarking it myself even though I don't need SDI right now. The whole process seems unnecessarily complicated, but at least @Ava Rodriguez documented exactly what worked. I had no idea about services like Claimyr to actually get through to EDD - that alone could save people days of frustration. Hope your back heals up quickly!

This is such a great success story and resource! As someone who works in healthcare administration, I see patients struggle with SDI extensions all the time. Your step-by-step approach is exactly what I recommend to patients: 1. Don't wait - contact your doctor immediately when you realize you need an extension 2. Be specific about the form needed (DE 2525XX for extensions) 3. Use services like Claimyr if you can't get through to EDD directly 4. Make sure everything is submitted BEFORE your current period ends The fact that you got the EDD rep to note the incoming extension in your file was brilliant - that's what prevents payment gaps. I'm definitely sharing this thread with colleagues who help patients navigate disability claims. Hope your sciatica improves soon and thanks for taking the time to update everyone!
