Extending disability claim for postpartum depression before switching to PFL baby bonding
I just had my baby 6 weeks ago and my disability claim ends tomorrow (2/18/25). My OB filled out paperwork extending my disability claim for another 3 weeks because I've been struggling with really bad postpartum depression and anxiety. She wants me to see a psychiatrist before clearing me to go back to work or start baby bonding. I'm super confused about what I'm supposed to do next. When I log into my EDD account, the only form options showing are "appeal" or "apply for PFL." Do I need to do something special for this 3-week extension? Will my doctor's note automatically extend my claim? I tried calling EDD but gave up after being on hold for 2 hours yesterday. This is my first baby and I'm already overwhelmed with the PPD/PPA symptoms, and now I'm panicking about losing income during these extra weeks. Help!

Your doctor needs to submit a supplemental certification for your extension. There should be a form called "Physician/Practitioner's Supplementary Certificate" (DE2525XX) that your doctor fills out and submits to EDD directly. This is different from applying for PFL, which you'll do after your disability period fully ends. You might want to call your doctor's office to make sure they submitted this form already. Sometimes the extension gets approved automatically if your doctor submitted it, but you won't see any update online right away.

•Thank you! I'm going to call my doctor's office right now to confirm they submitted that form. I was so confused because there wasn't any option on the EDD website that seemed right for my situation.

•That's such a relief to hear! Did you have to do anything special when transitioning from the extended disability to baby bonding? I'm worried about messing something up with the paperwork.

The EDD system is DELIBERATELY CONFUSING and they HOPE you'll give up trying to get what you're entitled to! I've been through this THREE TIMES with my kids and every time there's some new way they try to deny benefits. Make sure you document EVERYTHING - dates, times, who you talked to. If your doctor submitted the extension form but EDD "loses" it (which happens ALL THE TIME), you'll need proof.

•This is making me so anxious. I'm worried about my doctor's office not submitting the right paperwork. I'm going to document everything like you suggested.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD to confirm they received your extension, you might want to try Claimyr. I found them after spending days trying to get through to EDD for my maternity leave claim issues. They got me connected to an actual EDD rep in about 10 minutes (after I'd spent literally weeks trying on my own). Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 that shows how it works. Totally worth it when you need to speak with someone at EDD quickly, especially for complicated situations like yours.

•I've used them too. Only way I could actually talk to a human at EDD without wasting an entire day on hold.

•They're actually two different benefits in California. Pregnancy and recovery from childbirth is covered under State Disability Insurance (SDI) for typically 4 weeks before birth and 6-8 weeks after (depending on delivery type). Then Paid Family Leave (PFL) covers baby bonding for up to 8 weeks. They're separate claims, even though they're both through EDD.

Here's exactly what you need to do: 1. Call your doctor TODAY to confirm they submitted form DE2525XX for your extension 2. Request a copy of this form for your records 3. If your doctor hasn't sent it, get them to do it immediately 4. Keep your current claim open - DO NOT file for PFL yet 5. Wait until after your extension period ends to file for baby bonding PFL 6. When you do file for PFL, use form DE2501FP The system doesn't show extension options online because extensions are initiated by healthcare providers, not claimants. Your online portal won't update until after they process the extension paperwork, which can take 7-10 business days.

•Thank you for these specific steps! I just called my doctor and they said they submitted the form last Thursday. Should I be concerned that my online account still doesn't show the extension? My current claim says it ends tomorrow.

Don't worry about what your online account shows right now. There's often a delay between when your doctor submits paperwork and when the system updates. If your doctor submitted the extension last Thursday, EDD is probably still processing it. You likely won't see the extension reflected online until after your original end date passes. If you don't receive payment within 10 days after your regular disability would have ended, then it's time to follow up. But for now, you've done everything right.

•Thank you so much for the reassurance. I'll try to be patient. This whole system is so stressful when you're already dealing with a newborn and mental health struggles.

I went through something similar with my second baby. The mental health extension paperwork can be confusing, but here's what helped me: I called my doctor's office and asked them to email me confirmation that they sent the DE2525XX form, along with the date they submitted it. Having that documentation gave me peace of mind while waiting for EDD to process everything. Also, don't feel guilty about needing the extension for PPD/PPA - this is exactly what the system is designed for. Taking care of your mental health IS taking care of your baby. The transition to PFL baby bonding will happen smoothly once your extended disability period ends, but focus on getting better first. Wishing you all the best! 💙

•Thank you so much for this advice! I really needed to hear that it's okay to take this time for my mental health. I've been feeling so guilty about extending my leave when other moms seem to bounce back so quickly. I'm definitely going to ask my doctor's office for that email confirmation - that's such a smart idea to have documentation while I wait for EDD to catch up with the paperwork.

I'm so sorry you're going through this - PPD/PPA is incredibly tough and navigating EDD on top of it feels impossible sometimes. I just want to echo what others have said about not feeling guilty for needing this extension. Your mental health matters so much, especially with a new baby. One thing that helped me when I was in a similar situation was keeping a simple log on my phone of all the EDD-related calls and documentation. Just basic stuff like "2/18 - called doctor's office, confirmed they sent DE2525XX on 2/14" so I could reference it later if needed. The brain fog from PPD made it hard for me to remember details, and having it written down was a lifesaver. Also, if you haven't already, consider asking your OB about resources for new mom support groups in your area. Sometimes just knowing you're not alone in this journey helps with the anxiety around all the paperwork stuff. Hang in there mama! 💕

•This is such great advice about keeping a log! I've been so scattered with the baby brain and PPD fog that I can barely remember what I did yesterday, let alone track all these EDD details. I'm definitely going to start doing this on my phone right now. And thank you for mentioning support groups - I hadn't even thought about that but you're right that feeling less alone would probably help with all the anxiety around this paperwork mess. Did you find your support group through your OB or somewhere else?
