How many weeks does EDD SDI approve for pregnancy complications at 27 weeks?
I'm currently 27 weeks pregnant and dealing with some complications (high blood pressure and early signs of preeclampsia). My OB mentioned at my appointment yesterday that she might need to take me off work completely and put me on disability. I work in retail so I'm on my feet all day and it's getting really tough. This is my first pregnancy and I'm confused about how the EDD disability works... how many weeks do they typically approve you for with pregnancy complications? Does it depend on what my doctor writes? Will I need to keep getting recertified every few weeks? Any advice from moms who've gone through this would be super helpful!

I just went through this last year! Your doctor is the one who determines how much time you get - it's not EDD. My OB took me off at 28 weeks for similar issues and wrote me out until 6 weeks postpartum. So I got about 14 weeks before delivery plus the 6 weeks recovery after. With complications they're usually pretty understanding, especially with preeclampsia which can get serious. Just make sure your doctor fills out the medical certification form completely and specifies the time period.

Thank you so much! That's really helpful to know. Did you have to check in with your doctor regularly during that time or did they just approve you until your due date?

According to EDD guidelines, for pregnancy disability, you can receive benefits for up to 4 weeks before your expected delivery date and up to 6 weeks after actual delivery (8 weeks for C-section). HOWEVER - and this is important - if you have complications like what you're describing, your doctor can certify you for longer periods before delivery. There's no specific week limit for complications - it's based on your doctor's medical determination of when you're disabled from working. Make sure your doctor completes the medical certification form (DE 2501) with the specific time period based on your condition.

Oh that makes sense! So the standard is 4 weeks before but with complications it's basically whatever my doctor says I need. Thank you for explaining!

My doctor put me on disability at 24 weeks due to chronic hypertension and I was off until 8 weeks after my c-section. You'll just need your doctor to fill out the forms explaining why you need to be off work. They pay you your benefit amount until your dr releases you to go back or until you reach the maximum benefit period.

This is exactly right. It's important to note that pregnancy disability is treated differently than regular SDI claims. For pregnancy with complications, your doctor determines the period of disability based on your specific medical condition. They'll submit this information on your DE 2501 form. Just be aware that EDD might occasionally ask for updated medical information if your disability period extends significantly beyond the typical timeframe.

omg the EDD system is so frustrating to deal with!! I was off for 12 weeks before my due date bc of gestational diabetes and high blood pressure and they kept sending me these confusing letters asking for more info. my doctor had to resubmit the medical forms twice!!!! make sure ur doctor's office is good with paperwork

That sounds stressful! Did you eventually get approved for the full time you needed? I'm worried about the financial side of things if this drags on.

When I got put on disability for pregnancy last year, I had to call EDD about a problem with my claim and it was IMPOSSIBLE to get through! I tried for days and kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD agent within like 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. It seriously saved me so much stress when I was already dealing with pregnancy complications.

Every pregnancy is different but my sister got 14 weeks before delivery for her pregnancy complications and then another 8 weeks after her c-section. It matters more what your doctor says than what EDD thinks. They're not going to question your doctor's medical opinion as long as the paperwork is filled out correctly. I would just talk to your OB about your concerns and be honest about your work conditions.

Thanks for sharing your sister's experience! I'll definitely have a detailed talk with my OB at my next appointment. Retail work is getting unbearable with all the standing and lifting.

To add some important information: when your doctor puts you on disability for pregnancy complications, you will receive your regular SDI benefits (approximately 60-70% of your wages). Once you deliver, your claim automatically transitions to what's considered

Thank you for explaining the transition between the different programs! I didn't realize I would need to file separate claims. Is there a waiting period before benefits start once my doctor takes me off work?

Yes, there is a 7-day waiting period before SDI benefits begin. This means you won't be paid for the first week you're off work. If your doctor takes you off work this week, for example, your benefits would start paying from the second week. This waiting period only applies once per benefit year, so you won't have another waiting period when transitioning to the post-delivery portion of your claim.

wait i thought the waiting period was 10 days?? thats what they told me last year

The waiting period is definitely 7 days, not 10. It's been 7 days for several years now. Perhaps you were given incorrect information or there was a misunderstanding.

oh maybe i got confused with how long it took them to process my claim lol

One more thing to keep in mind - don't expect your payments to start right away! Even after the waiting period, EDD can take 2-3 weeks to process your claim and issue first payment. Make sure you have some savings to cover that gap. I remember being stressed about bills when my payments didn't show up right away.

That's really good to know about the payment delay. I'll definitely need to plan for that. Thank you for all the helpful advice everyone! I feel much better prepared for my doctor appointment now.
