Can I apply for EDD SDI while hospitalized at 26 weeks pregnant with placenta previa?

I'm currently hospitalized with complete placenta previa at 26 weeks pregnant. My doctor says I'll need to stay here for at least the next 6 weeks (possibly until delivery) due to complications and bleeding risks. This is already my second hospitalization for this condition. Can I apply for SDI now even though I'm still about 14 weeks from my due date? Or is disability only for the standard 4 weeks before delivery? I've never had pregnancy complications before and wasn't planning to stop working until much closer to my due date, but now I'm suddenly on hospital bedrest with no income. My employer doesn't offer paid leave, and I'm really worried about finances. Does anyone know if EDD covers pregnancy disability this far in advance when medically necessary?

Yes! You absolutely can apply for SDI now. Pregnancy disability isn't limited to the standard 4 weeks before delivery - it's available anytime during pregnancy when you're unable to work due to a pregnancy-related medical condition. Complete placenta previa requiring hospitalization definitely qualifies. Your doctor will need to certify that you're disabled from working on the medical certification form (DE 2501). Make sure they clearly indicate it's pregnancy-related but due to complications requiring hospitalization, not just regular pregnancy. You can receive SDI benefits for as long as your doctor certifies you're unable to work, even if that's the remainder of your pregnancy. Don't wait - apply right away through SDI Online!

Thank you so much for this information! This is such a relief. Do you know if I need to do anything special when filling out the application since I'm already in the hospital? Will they need documentation from the hospital too or just my OB's certification?

A month? That's going to be tough but still better than nothing. I'm hoping since I'm in a pretty clear-cut medical situation they might process it faster? Did you have any issues with the paperwork or was it just slow processing on their end?

Just to add some important details: what you're applying for is technically Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL), which is paid through SDI. It's different from Paid Family Leave (PFL), which is what you'd use after delivery to bond with your baby. For your current situation: 1. Apply online through SDI Online ASAP (https://edd.ca.gov/Disability/SDI_Online.htm) 2. Your doctor needs to complete their portion - make sure they specify this is for pregnancy complications requiring hospitalization 3. There's a 7-day waiting period before benefits start 4. You can receive up to 52 weeks of benefits if medically necessary (though obviously your pregnancy won't last that long) 5. Benefits are approximately 60-70% of your wages If your doctor fills out the paperwork while you're still hospitalized, they'll be able to certify that your disability began on the date of admission, which should help with retroactive benefits.

Im so sorry youre going through this!! I had placenta previa too but mine resolved by 32 weeks thank god. YES apply for SDI right away! Its your RIGHT as a california worker who paid into the system! BUT let me tell you something important - EDD is IMPOSSIBLE to reach by phone right now!!! When I had questions about my claim i spent DAYS calling and getting hung up on. Finally I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual EDD agent in like 30 minutes! Saved my sanity. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Good luck and take care of yourself and that baby!!

This happened to me last year! I had severe preeclampsia at 24 weeks and was put on hospital bedrest and then home bedrest. I applied for SDI right away and was approved. BUT!!!! Make sure your doctor writes the correct diagnosis code and specifically states that you CANNOT work due to being hospitalized. My first certification got rejected because my OB just wrote "pregnancy complications" which wasn't specific enough. Had to get it resubmitted with "complete placenta previa requiring hospitalization" and clear work restrictions. You're entitled to benefits from day 1 after the waiting period (7 days) until your doctor releases you to return to work OR until you deliver and then transition to recovery (usually 6-8 weeks postpartum depending on delivery type). Don't let anyone at EDD tell you that you can only get 4 weeks pre-delivery. That's for normal pregnancies. Complicated pregnancies get benefits for the duration of the disability!

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of specific advice I needed. I'll make sure my OB knows to be very specific about my condition and work restrictions. Did you have to do anything special since you were transitioning from hospital to home bedrest, or was it all covered under the same claim?

EVERYONE HERE IS WRONG!!! You can't get disability until 36 weeks pregnant!!! My sister tried last year and they denied her claim because it wasn't close enough to her due date!!! Don't waste your time!!!

This information is incorrect. California SDI absolutely covers pregnancy complications at ANY point during pregnancy when medically necessary. The 4-weeks-before-due-date guideline is only for normal, uncomplicated pregnancies. When there are complications requiring bedrest or hospitalization, benefits can begin whenever the doctor certifies disability. Your sister's claim may have been denied for other reasons, or perhaps her doctor didn't properly document medical necessity. Please don't discourage someone from applying for benefits they're entitled to.

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! I just applied through SDI Online and had my doctor submit the medical certification. He made sure to be very specific about my condition requiring hospitalization and complete work restriction. I'm still nervous about how long it might take to get approved, but at least I know I'm eligible. I'll update here when I hear something back from EDD.

Great job getting your application in quickly! One additional tip: Keep a copy of all your medical documentation. If your claim gets delayed or if there are any questions, having everything readily available will help speed things up. Wishing you a safe remainder of your pregnancy!

this whole system is so confusing to me!! so theres SDI and PDL and PFL and they're all different things?? and some are before birth and some are after?? why cant they just make ONE maternity system that covers everything!! its ridiculous how complicated they make this stuff when your already dealing with pregnancy problems!!

I know it's confusing! Here's the simple version: 1. If you're pregnant and can't work: SDI pays you (what they call Pregnancy Disability Leave) 2. After baby is born and you're bonding: PFL pays you You're right that it should be simpler, but at least California HAS these programs. Many states don't offer any paid leave at all!

Yes! My claim was just approved yesterday - took about 10 days from when I submitted everything. Not as bad as I feared. Make sure your doctor is super specific about why you can't work - I think that helped mine go through faster.
