SDI claim for pregnancy still pending after 14 days - getting worried about finances

I submitted my SDI claim for pregnancy disability exactly two weeks ago and it's still showing 'processing' on my account. My doctor submitted all the medical certification paperwork right away (I checked with their office). I'm 36 weeks pregnant now and really stressed because I had to stop working last week due to severe back pain and swelling. My last paycheck is almost gone and rent is due next week! Is this normal processing time? The EDD website says 'claims take approximately 14 days' but I'm wondering if I should be worried at this point. Has anyone else experienced delays with pregnancy disability claims recently? What's the average wait time you all experienced?

It varies but mine took about 12 days to be approved back in January. I'd give it a few more days before panicking. Have you checked for any messages in your SDI Online inbox? Sometimes they request additional info but don't email you about it.

Thanks, I just checked my inbox and there's nothing there. It just shows 'claim received' when I look at my claim status. I'll try to wait a few more days but it's so hard when bills are piling up.

mine took 3 weeks lol! the system is so slooooow for pregnancy claims especially. they told me its cuz they have more to verify or something. hang in there!

That's not entirely accurate. Pregnancy claims don't take longer than other types of disability claims. The verification process is the same. It has more to do with current claim volume and staffing at EDD. Right now they're processing within 14-21 days for most claims.

You might want to try calling them directly to check on the status. Sometimes there's a small issue that needs to be resolved that doesn't show up on your online account. When I was pregnant with my second, my claim sat for 3 weeks because they needed additional info from my doctor but never notified me. One phone call fixed it and I got paid 3 days later.

I've been trying to call every day this week but keep getting the recording that says they're experiencing high call volume and to try again later. It's SO frustrating! Do they ever actually answer the phone?

I kno its frustrating!! my sisters claim took 19 days just last month for her pregnancy. EDD is always backed up these days with all the layoffs happening. did u double check that ur doctor filled out ALL parts of the form? my doc missed one tiny section and it delayed everything!!

I called my doctor's office yesterday and they said they completed everything correctly and submitted it electronically. They even gave me a confirmation number. That's why I'm so confused about what's taking so long!

After having the EXACT same issue (mine took 23 days in total), I discovered that calling at specific times makes a huge difference. Try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM. If that doesn't work, I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through. It basically holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a demo video that explains it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd - definitely worth it when you're super pregnant and stressed!

does that actually work?? i've never heard of it before sounds kinda sketchy tbh

Are you experiencing financial hardship because of the delay? If so, make sure to mention that when you do reach them. They can sometimes expedite claims in hardship situations, especially for pregnant women close to their due date. Ask specifically about the 'hardship expedite' process.

Yes, definitely experiencing hardship! I had to stop working earlier than planned due to complications, so I wasn't fully prepared financially. I'll definitely mention the hardship expedite if I can ever get through to someone. Thank you for that tip!

I work with SDI claims often, and I can tell you that waiting 14 days is still within normal processing times. A few important things to check: 1. Make sure your Last Day Worked (LDW) on your claim matches what your employer reported 2. Verify that your doctor used the correct EDD Customer Account Number on the medical certification 3. Double-check that your wages during the base period qualify you for the benefit amount Also, be aware that there's a 7-day unpaid waiting period for SDI claims, so you won't get benefits for the first week after your disability began.

Thank you for such detailed information! I know about the waiting period and accounted for that. My last day worked was properly reported (2/15/2025) and my doctor confirmed they used my correct account number. I worked full-time for the past two years so I should definitely qualify for the benefits. I guess I just need to keep waiting and trying to call.

Just wanted to update you - I remember now that I actually got a letter in the mail about my claim approval BEFORE it showed as approved online. So you might want to check your physical mail too. The SDI Online system sometimes lags behind the actual processing.

Oh! I hadn't thought of that. I'll definitely check my mail more carefully. Thanks for the tip!

UPDATE: My claim was just approved this morning! It took exactly 16 days. I checked the EDD website and it now shows my claim as approved with a benefit amount. I should get my first payment in 2-3 business days according to the message. Thank you all so much for your help and reassurance. The stress relief is huge!
