Can't get through to EDD SDI phone line - what's the secret phone number that actually works?
I've been calling the EDD disability office for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT trying to get someone to help me with my pregnancy disability claim. Every single time I call (1-800-480-3287), I either get stuck in an endless phone tree, told the call volume is too high, or get disconnected after waiting for 45+ minutes! I've tried calling right when they open at 8am, during lunch, and even 5 minutes before they close at 5pm. Nothing works!! My doctor submitted his portion of my claim 2 weeks ago, and I still don't see anything in my SDI Online account showing it was received. My due date is in 4 weeks and I'm starting to panic about whether I'll get my benefits on time. Does anyone know if there's a special phone number or extension that actually gets you to a real person? Or some secret time of day when the lines aren't jammed? Any advice would be massively appreciated!

Unfortunately there's no 'secret' number - they've consolidated all their phone services. The best time to call is Tuesday-Thursday between 8:05-8:15am (not right at 8, when everyone calls). Also, when you get the automated system, press 1 for English (or 2 for Spanish), then 1 for SDI claim info, then 7 for rep. Sometimes option 4 works better. Keep trying these combinations as some routes have shorter queues than others. Make sure your phone can stay on speaker for at least an hour because even if you get in queue, the wait is usually long. Good luck!

•Thank you!! I'll try the Tuesday-Thursday early morning approach with those specific menu options. I didn't realize the option numbers could make such a difference in queue times. I've just been frantically pressing 0 hoping to get a person directly. Appreciate the specific advice!

•32 times?! That's insane! Did you eventually get through, or did you have to try something else? I'm getting desperate here!

I went through this EXACT nightmare last year with my SDI claim. Turns out there's a service called Claimyr that can actually get you through to EDD. They connect you with a disability rep usually within 20 mins instead of hours or days of trying. I was skeptical but desperate - it worked! Got my pregnancy disability claim sorted in one call. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. The website is claimyr.com. It was honestly such a relief after spending days trying to get through on my own.

•Sounds like a scam. Why would you use a third party when you can just call EDD directly? They just want your personal info. People need to stop falling for these services!!!

•Thank you for this suggestion! I'll check out that website and video. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything, especially with my due date coming up so soon. I just need to talk to someone who can confirm they have my doctor's certification and that my claim is being processed.

•This actually doesn't work anymore with the new phone system they implemented in late 2024. The system now disconnects you after pressing 0 three times in a row. I work with disability claimants, and the most effective approach is to navigate through the specific menu options for your claim type and follow the prompts completely. Shortcuts often result in longer waits or disconnections with the current system.

I had the same problem with my pregnancy disability claim back in January. What worked for me was calling EXACTLY at 8:03am (not 8:00 when everyone else calls). Also, make sure you have your claim number, last 4 of SSN, and doctor's info ready because they'll ask for verification immediately. Also - have you checked that your doctor actually submitted the correct form? My OB thought she submitted everything but it turns out her office sent in the wrong form (they used the regular disability one instead of the pregnancy-specific DE 2501FP). Might be worth double-checking with them too. Another thing - the SDI Online account sometimes doesn't update for 3-4 days even after they've processed things on their end. The system is just slow. Hope this helps!

•Wow, I didn't realize there was a pregnancy-specific form! I'm going to call my doctor's office right now to verify which form they sent. That could explain the delay. And I'll try your 8:03am trick tomorrow - appreciate the very specific timing advice! I'll have all my info ready to go too.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!! I've been dealing with these people for months with my long-term disability claim and it's INSANE how difficult they make it to reach anyone. They WANT you to get frustrated and hang up. Less claims they have to process = less money they pay out. They're all corrupt and don't care about disabled people AT ALL!!

•While the system definitely has problems, it's not accurate to say it's intentionally designed to prevent claims. The EDD SDI division is actually severely understaffed since the pandemic and budget cuts, with far fewer agents handling more claims than in previous years. Most delays are due to genuine backlogs rather than intentional obstruction. I understand your frustration though - the system absolutely needs improvement.

Disability claims specialist here. A few things that might help: 1. For pregnancy disability claims specifically, there's often a backlog in March-May (tax season + spring babies), so processing is running about 3 weeks behind normal right now. 2. Verify your doctor submitted form DE 2501FP (pregnancy-specific) and not just the standard DE 2501. 3. Phone technique: When calling, enter your social security number in the automated system FIRST before trying to get a representative. The system prioritizes calls with SSNs already entered. 4. If you're within 4 weeks of your due date, mention this specifically when you get a representative - pregnancy claims can be expedited when delivery is imminent. 5. Check if your employer has submitted their portion correctly - this is often the missing piece. Hope this helps!

•This is incredibly helpful information! I had no idea about entering my SSN first for priority or that pregnancy claims could be expedited closer to the due date. I'm going to verify all these details with my doctor and employer tomorrow. Thank you so much for these expert tips!

My sister works for EDD (not SDI divison though) and she said they're completely swamped right now because they just updated their computer system and lots of claims are stuck in this weird limbo. They're working overtime to fix it but its affecting TONS of people. Not saying its right but just explaining why its such a mess right now.

•That's really interesting insider info - I had no idea about the system update. That explains a lot about why things seem even worse than usual right now. Please thank your sister for her hard work dealing with this mess!

I'm in a similar situation with my maternity leave claim! Been trying to get through for over a week now. Based on all the advice here, I'm going to try calling at 8:03am tomorrow with my SSN ready and make sure my doctor used the DE 2501FP form specifically. It's so stressful being this close to delivery and not knowing if everything is processing correctly. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and tips - this thread has been more helpful than anything I've found on the official EDD website!

•You're so welcome! This whole thread has been a lifesaver for me too - I was feeling completely lost before reading everyone's advice. It's crazy how much more helpful this community is than the actual EDD resources! I'm planning to try that 8:03am call tomorrow as well, so fingers crossed for both of us. Maybe we should check back in here and let everyone know if these tips actually work? Good luck with your claim and delivery!

I'm dealing with this exact same frustration right now! Been trying to get through for my disability claim for the past 5 days with zero luck. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about the specific timing (8:03am), entering SSN first, or the different menu paths that might have shorter queues. Going to try the Tuesday-Thursday morning approach with the 1-1-7 sequence tomorrow. It's so disappointing that we have to crowdsource this information because the official system is so impossible to navigate. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and actual working strategies!

•Welcome to the club! It's honestly crazy that we have to decode this system like it's some kind of puzzle. I'm planning to try all these strategies too - the 8:03am timing, entering SSN first, and those specific menu combinations. It sounds like everyone here has had to become an expert just to access basic services they're entitled to. Maybe we should all report back with what actually works so we can help the next person who finds themselves in this situation. Good luck with your call tomorrow!

I'm going through the exact same nightmare right now with my pregnancy disability claim! Been calling for over a week with no luck getting through. This thread is a goldmine of actual useful information - way more helpful than anything on the EDD website. I'm definitely going to try the 8:03am timing tomorrow (not 8:00 when everyone calls), enter my SSN first in the automated system, and use the 1-1-7 menu sequence. Also need to double-check with my OB that they submitted the DE 2501FP form specifically and not just the regular disability form. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to become detectives just to access benefits we've paid into, but I really appreciate everyone sharing what actually works. Will report back if I have success with these strategies!

•I'm in the exact same boat - pregnancy disability claim and getting nowhere with the phone lines! This community has been such a lifesaver compared to trying to navigate this alone. I'm also planning to try that 8:03am strategy tomorrow along with entering my SSN first. One thing I learned from reading through all these responses is to have absolutely everything ready before calling - claim number, last 4 of SSN, doctor info, and even employer details since apparently that's often the missing piece. It's so frustrating that we're all having to become experts at gaming a system that should just work properly in the first place. Definitely keep us posted on how the DE 2501FP form verification goes with your OB - I need to check that too!

I'm going through this exact same situation with my pregnancy disability claim! After reading all these incredibly helpful responses, I'm definitely going to try the 8:03am call strategy tomorrow (avoiding the 8:00am rush), enter my SSN first in the automated system, and use the 1-1-7 menu sequence that Ella mentioned. I also need to verify with my doctor that they submitted the DE 2501FP pregnancy-specific form rather than the standard disability form - that seems to be a common issue that causes delays. It's honestly shocking how much more useful this community thread has been than any official EDD resource. The fact that we all have to become experts at navigating this broken system just to access benefits we've paid into is really frustrating, but I'm so grateful everyone is sharing what actually works. I'll definitely report back if these strategies help me get through - fingers crossed!

•Welcome to the struggle! This thread has been such a game-changer for all of us dealing with this mess. I love how we're all becoming EDD phone system experts out of necessity! One thing I'd add to your strategy - based on what Sophie mentioned earlier, make sure to mention that you're within 4 weeks of your due date when you do get through, since pregnancy claims can apparently be expedited when delivery is imminent. Also, Connor's tip about having your doctor's info ready for immediate verification seems really important. It's crazy that this community has better information than the actual EDD website, but at least we're all helping each other figure this out! Definitely keep us posted on your success - I think we're building a pretty solid playbook here for future parents going through this nightmare!

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Been trying to reach EDD SDI for my disability claim for almost two weeks with absolutely no success. This thread has been incredibly eye-opening - I had no idea about so many of these strategies! The 8:03am timing (not 8:00), entering SSN first in the automated system, the specific menu sequences, and checking for the correct forms - this is all information I never would have found anywhere else. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to crowdsource basic information about accessing services we've already paid into through our paychecks. I'm going to try the Tuesday-Thursday morning approach tomorrow with the 1-1-7 sequence and have all my documentation ready. Thank you to everyone sharing their real experiences and what actually works - this community is providing better support than any official EDD resource I've found!

•You're absolutely right that this community has been more helpful than any official resource! I'm actually planning to try these same strategies tomorrow morning - it's amazing how we've all become detectives trying to crack the EDD phone system. One thing I noticed from reading through everything is that having your employer information ready might be crucial too, since Sophie mentioned that's often the missing piece that holds up claims. It's so frustrating that we have to treat calling a government service like preparing for a military operation, but at least we're all figuring it out together! Definitely let us know how the Tuesday-Thursday 8:03am approach works for you - I think this thread is becoming the unofficial EDD survival guide that actually helps people!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been struggling with the same issue for my pregnancy disability claim - been calling for 6 days straight with zero success getting through to anyone. Reading all these responses has been like finding a treasure map! I had no idea about the 8:03am timing strategy, entering your SSN first in the automated system, or that there were specific menu sequences that might have shorter wait times. Also definitely need to verify my doctor used the DE 2501FP pregnancy-specific form rather than the standard one. It's honestly mind-blowing that this community thread contains more actionable information than the entire official EDD website. The fact that we all have to become phone system hackers just to access benefits we've already paid for is completely ridiculous, but I'm so grateful everyone is sharing their real-world strategies. I'm going to try the Tuesday-Thursday morning approach with all my documentation ready and will definitely report back with results. Thank you all for turning this frustrating experience into something manageable!

•Welcome to the most helpful EDD thread on the internet! I'm also dealing with pregnancy disability and this community has been a lifesaver. One additional tip I picked up from all these responses - when you do get through, ask them to confirm they received BOTH your doctor's portion AND your employer's portion of the claim. Apparently missing employer paperwork is super common and can cause major delays. Also, based on what Molly mentioned about the system updates causing backlogs, it might be worth asking the rep to specifically check if your claim is stuck in that "limbo" status. I'm planning to try all these strategies tomorrow too - the 8:03am call, SSN entry first, 1-1-7 menu sequence, and having all my documentation ready including employer info. Let's all report back and help the next wave of frustrated parents navigate this broken system!
