Unable to reach EDD SDI after 5 weeks of pending claim - any working phone numbers?

I'm going absolutely crazy trying to get through to someone at EDD about my disability claim. It's been 5 whole weeks in 'pending' status with zero updates or communication. Every time I call the number on their website (1-800-480-3287), I get the automated message saying 'we've reached our maximum callers for the day' and then it just disconnects me! I've tried calling right when they open at 8am, mid-day, afternoon - nothing works. My rent is due next week and I'm seriously panicking. My doctor confirmed they submitted all the medical certification paperwork correctly weeks ago. Has anyone found an actual working number to reach a real human being at disability? Or any tricks to get through the main line? I'm desperate at this point.

the same exact thing happened to me in January! i called like 50+ times over 3 weeks and never got through once. its absolutely ridiculous that they expect people who cant work to somehow magically pay bills while they take their sweet time. the system is COMPLETELY BROKEN.

This is so frustrating to hear that I'm not the only one! Did your claim ever get approved? How long did it take?

Unfortunately, there's no secret phone number, but there are a few strategies that might help: 1. Try calling exactly at 8:00 AM when they open (set an alarm for 7:58) 2. Call on Wednesday or Thursday - typically fewer callers those days 3. Use the online messaging system through your SDI Online account - sometimes they respond within 5-7 days 4. Contact your state assembly member's office - they have special liaisons who can help with EDD issues 5. Check if there's a flag on your account that needs addressing - sometimes there's a simple documentation issue Hang in there - the system is definitely overwhelmed right now.

Thank you for these tips! I'll definitely try calling first thing Wednesday morning. I've sent 3 messages through the online system already with no response. I didn't know about contacting my assembly member though - that's a great idea if I still can't get through this week.

This isn't necessarily true - during high volume periods, some people never get through no matter how many times they call. The EDD SDI phone system simply can't handle the current number of claimants trying to reach them. Let's not spread false hope.

I found this service called Claimyr that helped me actually get through to EDD SDI last month when my disability claim was pending for almost 6 weeks. It basically keeps dialing for you and reserves your place in line when there's an opening. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that explains how it works. After I got through, I found out my claim was delayed because they needed additional medical information, but no one had bothered to notify me. Got it resolved in one call once I finally reached someone.

Really?? I'm going to check this out today. At this point I'd try anything. Did they explain why they never contacted you about needing more information? This whole system is so broken.

There are several reasons your claim might be pending for this long: 1. Medical provider information discrepancy - the most common issue 2. Employment verification delay - especially if your employer contests the claim 3. Base period wage issues - if your earnings history needs additional verification 4. System processing backlog - currently about 3-4 weeks for uncomplicated claims Instead of just trying to call, I recommend submitting a formal appeal for delayed claim processing. This creates a separate workflow in their system and often triggers a review. You can find the appeal form on the EDD website under "Forms and Publications" (search for DE 1000A). While not technically an appeal, it often gets faster attention.

This is really helpful information, thank you. I didn't know about the formal appeal option. My employer definitely isn't contesting anything - they've been supportive about my medical leave. I'm going to look up that form right now!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. The waiting period is absolutely excruciating when you have bills due. One thing that worked for me back in November was sending a message through my SDI Online account specifically mentioning that I was experiencing financial hardship and including the exact date my doctor submitted the medical certification. For some reason, using the phrase "financial hardship" seemed to get their attention, and they processed my claim within 3 days after that message. Might be worth trying!

Thank you for the tip about mentioning "financial hardship" specifically. I've sent messages but never used that exact phrasing. I'll try sending another message with those key words today. Fingers crossed!

The system is definitely overwhelmed, but they do answer calls - just not nearly enough of them. According to published statistics, the EDD SDI division receives approximately 45,000 calls on busy days but only has staffing to handle about 9,000-10,000. That's why many people recommend trying alternative contact methods like the online messaging system or working with your local representative's office.

hey did u try calling the different office locations? sometimes the local offices pick up faster than the main number. google edd disability offices near me and you might find a direct number

•

This is actually not correct information. Local EDD offices handle unemployment claims, not disability claims. SDI claims are processed through centralized units, and calling local offices will only result in being redirected back to the main SDI number. Please be careful about spreading misinformation that might waste people's time.

Any update on your situation? Were you able to get through to anyone? I'm curious because I'm about to file my claim next week for surgery and I'm getting nervous after reading all these stories...

I finally got through yesterday! I tried the Claimyr service someone recommended here, and it worked - took about 40 minutes before I was connected to a rep. Turns out there was a discrepancy between the last day worked that I entered and what my employer reported (off by one day). Something so small held up my entire claim for 5+ weeks with zero communication! The rep fixed it immediately and said I should see payment within 3-5 days. For your upcoming claim, make absolutely sure your last day worked matches exactly what your employer will report. And if you don't see movement within 2 weeks, start being proactive about contacting them.
