Impossible to reach EDD by phone - any tricks for getting through busy signals?
I swear EDD phone lines are designed to make you lose your mind! I've been trying for almost 2 weeks to talk to someone about my claim status. I've become so desperate that I've been setting alarms to call at 7:58am so I can hit '0' the EXACT moment they open at 8:00am. But even doing that, all I get is the stupid automated message saying 'due to high call volume, we cannot take your call' and then it hangs up on me! I've called 23 times today alone (yes, I'm counting). My claim has been pending for 6 weeks now and I'm about to miss another rent payment. Does ANYONE have actual working tips for getting through to a real human being? I've tried calling different numbers, different times of day, even tried the disability line hoping they'd transfer me. Nothing works. I'm losing my mind here!

•I've tried both! The claims status just gives me automated info and no option to talk to anyone. Do you have a specific number that worked for you?

The trick is to call right before lunch (11:30am) or about an hour before closing (around 7pm). Most people try early morning which is why you're hitting the volume limits. Also, when you get through the initial menu, select the employer option first, then ask to be transferred to claims. The employer queue is usually shorter and they can transfer you to the right department. Make sure you have your claim ID and last employer information ready when you do connect - this speeds up verification and reduces the chance they'll need to transfer you again.

•Thank you!!! I'm definitely going to try the 11:30 approach tomorrow. I never thought about using the employer option, that's brilliant. Will update if it works!

•The employer option thing DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE. They fixed that loophole months ago. Now they just tell you to call the regular claimant line and hang up on you. I tried it 4x last month.

After weeks of facing the same frustration, I found this service called Claimyr that actually worked for me. They basically keep dialing EDD for you using their system until they get through, then connect you directly with an EDD rep. I was super skeptical but was desperate after trying for 3 weeks on my own. Got connected to an agent in about 45 minutes while I just went about my day. They have a video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. It saved me from losing my apartment while waiting for my claim to process.

•This sounds promising! Did they actually help resolve your claim issue once you got through? I'm at the point where I'd try anything that actually works.

•Yes! Once I got connected to the EDD rep, they were able to see that my claim had an eligibility interview flag that wasn't showing in my online account. The agent fixed it on the spot and my payment processed two days later. Definitely worth it after struggling for weeks with no answers.

Long-time EDD navigator here. There's actually a specific pattern to their phone system that can increase your chances of getting through. 1. Call the main line (866-333-4606) at 8:01am, 10:31am, or 3:01pm exactly. These are times when their call system refreshes its queue. 2. When prompted, choose option 1 (for English), then option 1 again (for UI claim questions), then option 3 (for claim status). 3. When they ask for your SSN, enter it, but purposely enter the LAST digit incorrectly. This will flag your call for a representative rather than the automated system. 4. When asked to verify, say it's incorrect, and you'll get routed to a person who can manually verify your identity and help with your claim. This works about 70% of the time for my clients. The key is timing your call exactly at those system refresh points. Also, have all your information ready - claim number, last employer details, and dates of employment. This reduces transfer time once you do connect. I hope this helps! Let me know if you get through.

•This is detailed advice, thank you so much! I'm going to set alarms for all three times tomorrow and try the wrong SSN trick. Will definitely update the thread if it works!

•I can confirm this works! I did this yesterday and got through after weeks of trying. The lady I spoke to was actually super nice and fixed my pending payment issue in like 5 minutes. Life saver tip!!!!

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!!!! I called 67 TIMES IN ONE DAY and never got through. They don't want to pay you so they make it IMPOSSIBLE to talk to anyone. I finally had to contact my state assembly person to get help. Look up who represents your district and email them - they have special EDD contacts that regular people don't have access to. It's CRIMINAL how they treat us!!!!

•I'm starting to think you're right about the system being designed to make people give up. I hadn't thought about contacting my assembly member - that's a really good idea if these other tips don't work. Thank you!

I experienced the exact same frustration with EDD phone lines during my unemployment period. After countless failed attempts, I discovered a few effective strategies that might help: 1. Try calling on Thursdays - their call volume is typically lower mid-week. 2. Use the comma trick if you're on a mobile phone: Save the EDD number in your contacts with commas to add pauses and automatically enter your selections. For example: 1-866-333-4606,1,2,4 (the commas create a 2-second pause before entering each number). 3. If your claim is pending for 6+ weeks, you qualify for an escalation. When you do get through, specifically ask for a "claim escalation due to hardship" - this puts your claim in a priority queue. 4. Have you tried the UI Online messaging system? Sometimes it's faster than phone support. Go to your UI Online account, select "Contact Us" and send a detailed message about your situation. Request a callback in your message. Also, document every attempt to contact them - dates, times, and what happened. This creates a paper trail if you need to prove you've been actively trying to resolve the issue. Hope one of these methods works for you!

•Thank you for these detailed tips! I didn't know about the comma trick or that I qualify for escalation after 6 weeks. I've tried the UI Online messaging system twice but haven't received any response yet. I'll definitely try calling on Thursday with the comma trick. The documentation advice is smart too - I've been keeping notes but not as detailed as I should.

UPDATE: I finally got through!!! Used a combo of the tips here - called at 10:31am exactly like @helpfulEDDguy suggested, used the wrong SSN trick, and got transferred to a real person after about 10 minutes on hold. The agent was actually super helpful and found that my claim had a "quarterly review flag" that was causing the pending status. Said my payments should release within 48 hours. THANK YOU all for the help - was seriously about to lose my mind!

•That's fantastic news! Glad the timing trick worked for you. The quarterly review flag is actually quite common but unfortunately doesn't show up in the online portal. Keep an eye on your UI Online account over the next 48 hours, and if the payment doesn't come through by then, try messaging them through the portal referencing your phone conversation (include date and time).
