EDD SDI payments stopped after transitioning from pregnancy to postpartum disability - normal?
I've been receiving pregnancy disability since January 5th and everything was going smoothly until now. I got my first two payments without any issues (around $1250 each), but this week nothing showed up in my account. I gave birth last Thursday and submitted the proper notification through SDI Online that same day letting them know I delivered. Is this payment gap normal when transitioning from pregnancy disability to postpartum recovery? Do I need to complete any additional forms now that I've had the baby? Or should I just keep waiting? My rent is due next week and I'm starting to get anxious about this payment delay. Anyone else experience something similar after delivery?

This happened to me too! When you notify them of delivery, there's a weird gap while they process the transition from pregnancy disability to postpartum disability. It took about 10 days for my payments to resume. Your doctor needs to submit a new medical certification for your postpartum recovery period. Did you confirm your doctor sent in the updated medical forms for after delivery?

•Ugh, no! My doctor didn't mention anything about submitting new forms after delivery. I thought just notifying EDD about the birth date was enough. I'll call my OB's office first thing tomorrow. Do you know which specific form they need to submit?

Congrats on your new baby! Yes, this is completely normal. There's always a payment gap when transitioning from pregnancy to postpartum disability because it's technically considered a new claim period. Your doctor needs to submit a DE 2501 form specifically for your postpartum recovery (usually 6-8 weeks depending on delivery type). Here's what you need to do: 1. Confirm your doctor submitted the postpartum medical certification 2. Check your SDI Online account for any pending forms or notifications 3. Make sure you've completed any new certification requirements The system won't process new payments until they have proper medical documentation that you're still disabled (now for recovery reasons rather than pregnancy).

•Thank you for the clear explanation! I'll check my SDI Online account right now to see if there's anything pending. This makes sense now - I didn't realize it's treated as a separate disability period requiring new paperwork.

•2 weeks?? That's so frustrating. I really can't wait that long with rent coming up. I've tried calling twice already and got disconnected both times after waiting 45+ minutes.

I went through this last year with my second baby. The payment gap is definitely normal, but you shouldn't have to wait weeks if you're proactive. Your OB needs to submit the new medical certification for postpartum recovery specifically stating the date of delivery and recovery period (6 weeks for vaginal delivery, 8 weeks for c-section). The problem is that EDD won't know how long your postpartum disability should be without this documentation. Once they have it, payments usually resume within 3-5 business days. I was stuck waiting for 3 weeks with my first baby because nobody told me about this step. With my second, I had my doctor submit the forms before I even left the hospital and only had a 5-day gap in payments.

•Thank you! This is really helpful. I had a c-section so I'll make sure my doctor specifies the 8-week recovery period. I'll call them first thing tomorrow morning to get this sorted out.

Isnt this just ridiculous? You're dealing with a NEWBORN and they make you jump through more paperwork hoops??? The whole system is designed to make it hard to get benefits we EARNED. I bet they hope new moms are too exhausted to follow up so they can save money. When I had my baby in 2023 I had to call them 12 times before someone fixed my claim!!

•I know!! It makes me so angry. They should at least send a notification explaining what's needed instead of just stopping payments with no explanation. New moms have enough to worry about!

I work at an OB office and we see this all the time. The transition from pregnancy to postpartum disability requires a new medical certification, but EDD doesn't make this clear to patients. If you need to reach EDD quickly, I've had many patients use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual person instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd In the meantime, call your OB's office and specifically ask for a "postpartum disability medical certification" to be submitted. Most OB offices are used to this request and can process it quickly.

•Thank you so much! I'll check out that service if I can't get through tomorrow. Already left a message with my OB office asking specifically for the postpartum certification.

I don't think anyone mentioned this yet, but after pregnancy disability ends, you can apply for Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding time with your baby. That gives you another 8 weeks of benefits at the same rate you were getting for disability. Don't miss out on that!

•Oh that's really good to know! I was planning to take as much time off as possible. Do I apply for PFL right after my postpartum disability ends, or should I apply in advance?

•You should apply for PFL about 1-2 weeks before your postpartum disability ends. The application is on the same SDI Online portal, but it's a different form (DE 2501FP). Unlike disability, you don't need doctor certification for PFL - it's just for bonding time with your new baby.

•OMG no I definitely used the "Report Change in Disability" option and entered my delivery date. At least I did that right!

Just checking in - were you able to get this resolved? Did your doctor submit the postpartum certification?

•Yes!! Thank you all for the help. My doctor submitted the postpartum certification yesterday morning. I also managed to speak with an EDD rep (after using that Claimyr service someone suggested - totally worth it). They confirmed everything is now in order and said I should receive the delayed payment within 3 business days, plus my regular payments will resume after that. Such a relief!
