EDD SDI paying me fewer days than expected after giving birth - pregnancy disability confusion
I'm super confused about my SDI payments after having my baby. I've been on pregnancy disability since my 36th week (doctor put me off work due to severe back pain), and I just delivered my baby last Thursday. Today I checked my EDD account and saw they only paid me for 11 days this certification period, which seems way off? I was expecting the full two weeks of payment. Is this normal when you transition from pregnancy disability to bonding time? I reported my delivery date through SDI Online right after having the baby - did I mess something up by reporting it too quickly? I'm worried they're cutting my pregnancy disability short, but I should still be eligible for the full 4 weeks postpartum under SDI before switching to Paid Family Leave. Has anyone else experienced this weird partial payment after delivery?

same thing happened 2 me! they cut mine off right after i had my baby and i had to call and fix it. you need to make sure they know ur still on DISABILITY not PFL yet. they get confused sometimes and think once baby comes ur automatically on bonding time

•Oh no, seriously?? So I need to call them to fix this? I was worried this might be what happened. Did you have to wait long to get through to someone?

This is a common misunderstanding with pregnancy disability claims. When you report your delivery date, EDD sometimes incorrectly processes it as the end of your pregnancy disability period rather than understanding you're entitled to recovery time postpartum. You are correct that you should receive up to 4 weeks of postpartum recovery time under SDI (longer if you had a C-section or complications). The 11 days payment likely represents a partial payment period that's been cut short. You'll need to contact EDD to clarify that you're still on disability for postpartum recovery. Make sure you have your claim ID, delivery date documentation, and your doctor's certification showing the expected recovery timeframe ready when you call.

•Thank you SO much for explaining this! My doctor did certify me for 6 weeks postpartum (I had some complications). Do you know if I need a new certification form or will my original one cover this?

•Your original certification should cover the entire period if your doctor indicated the expected recovery time correctly on the initial form. However, if they certified you for "until delivery" rather than "delivery plus 6 weeks" you might need additional documentation. It would be good to check your claim details in your SDI Online account to see what end date is showing.

I ran into this exact issue in January! The EDD system sometimes automatically assumes you're transitioning to PFL when you report your delivery date, but postpartum recovery is still part of your SDI claim. You need to call EDD right away and explain that you're still on disability for postpartum recovery. They can fix it on their end, but you'll probably need to submit a short form confirming your recovery period with your healthcare provider. Don't wait though - if you let it go too long, it gets more complicated to fix and you might experience payment gaps while they sort it out. When you talk to them, specifically ask about form DE 2501S (Supplemental Certificate) if they say you need additional certification.

•Thank you for the advice! This is my first pregnancy so I'm learning all this as I go. I've been trying to call EDD for two days now but keep getting disconnected. Is there a better time of day to reach them?

I'm actually dealing with the same thing right now! I'm 2 weeks postpartum and had to call EDD 27 times before getting through. It's a system glitch that happens a lot with pregnancy claims. When I finally reached someone, they said they'd adjust my claim but it would take 7-10 business days to fix. I'm still waiting for the correction to show up. So frustrating when you just had a baby and have to deal with this!

•27 times?! Ugh, I don't have the energy for that with a newborn. Did they at least backpay you for the days they missed?

•They said they would, but I'm still waiting to see the adjustment. The representative told me this happens all the time with pregnancy claims because their system isn't set up well for the transition between pregnancy disability and postpartum recovery. So annoying!

I had this issue too when I had my baby last year!!! The EDD computer system does this weird thing when you report giving birth. You DEFINITELY need to call them but good luck getting through LOL I spent 3 days trying and never could get a human on the phone

•3 days?! I don't have time for that with a newborn! There has to be a better way to reach them...

I had the exact same issue after having my baby last month. I tried calling EDD multiple times but kept getting disconnected or waiting forever. Finally I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The agent fixed my claim right away and explained that the system sometimes automatically cuts off SDI when you report delivery instead of allowing for the postpartum recovery period. They adjusted my claim to include the full postpartum period and I got the missing days paid on my next certification. Saved me so much stress during an already exhausting time!

•Thank you! I just looked it up - did you feel it was worth it? I'm desperate at this point and need to get this fixed before my bills are due.

•Absolutely worth it with a newborn. I couldn't spend hours redialing EDD while taking care of my baby. The agent I spoke with was super helpful and fixed everything in one call.

i think ur problem is that u reported the birth too early maybe? when i was on maternity leave last yr i waited until my actual certification date to report everything so they didn't mess anything up. the eDD system is super glitchy with pregnancy stuff!!!

•I didn't even think about that possibility! I was just trying to keep everything updated promptly. The whole system is so confusing.

After you get through to someone at EDD and they fix your claim, make sure you specifically ask them to note in your file that you're still on SDI for postpartum recovery. Also request a direct phone number or extension for the representative you speak with, as you might need to follow up. And just to clarify for your planning: once your SDI pregnancy disability claim ends (after your 4-6 weeks postpartum depending on delivery type and complications), you'll need to file a separate claim for Paid Family Leave for bonding time. That's a different claim entirely, even though it's through the same EDD system. Don't wait until your disability ends to start that application process - you can begin it about 1-2 weeks before your disability is scheduled to end to minimize gaps in payment.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I didn't realize I needed to file an entirely separate claim for PFL. How long does that application typically take to process? I want to avoid any gaps in payment.

•PFL claims usually process faster than disability claims - typically 7-10 days if everything is submitted correctly. I'd recommend starting the application about 2 weeks before your disability ends. You'll need your baby's birth certificate or hospital documentation, and you'll create a new claim in the same SDI Online system. The good thing is that once your disability claim is properly adjusted, the transition is usually smoother because they already have most of your information in the system.

I finally got my postpartum payment issue resolved! For anyone dealing with this: they fixed it retroactively and I received all my back benefits in one lump sum. EDD told me this happens constantly with pregnancy claims - apparently their computer system needs updating to better handle the transition from pregnancy disability to postpartum recovery. Hang in there!!

•That's a relief to hear! If you don't mind me asking, how long did the whole process take from when you first noticed the issue until you got your full payment?

•It took almost 3 weeks total 😩 About a week of trying to reach someone, then another 10 business days for the adjustment to process. But they did fix it properly once I got through to the right person.
