wait i just realized something... are u having the surgery TOMORROW? u should have filled out this form BEFORE ur last day of work ideally. the edd wants u to file within like 49 days of becoming disabled but the sooner the better. hope ur not cutting it too close!
I'm still working today (just half day) and my surgery is tomorrow morning. So today is technically my last day of work before disability starts. The doctor said I should fill out my part today and bring it to my appointment tomorrow where they'll complete their section. Does that timing sound ok?
One more important tip since you mentioned your recovery might be 6-8 weeks: When completing the form, be aware that your doctor will estimate your recovery time. If your actual recovery takes longer than initially estimated, you'll need to get your doctor to complete a supplemental medical certification (DE 2525XX) to extend your disability period. Many people miss this step and their benefits stop prematurely. Mark your calendar for about 2 weeks before the estimated recovery end date to check if you'll need an extension.
Just FYI there's a huge backlog due to their new computer system update that happened in December. They're taking FOREVER on everything disability related. My sister works for the state (not EDD) and said they're hearing about massive delays across all state benefits right now. Budget cuts + new systems = disaster!
I HATE the EDD disability system so much. Last year I broke my leg in 3 places and couldn't work for 4 months and they made me jump through so many hoops just to get what I was entitled to. My advice is just keep calling, document everything, and don't give up. The system is designed to wear you down.

People are right about the federal vs state tax thing - my bad! I checked my return from last year and my preparer DID include it on my federal but not my state return. Sorry for the confusion! This thread actually helped me understand my own taxes better lol.

•Your neighbor is probably thinking about Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), which had different rules during 2020-2021. Regular State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits, even if your disability was COVID-related, follow the standard tax rules I mentioned above. The COVID-specific programs have ended now anyway.
