Will attending one mandatory work meeting jeopardize my EDD SDI benefits?
I've been on EDD disability since January due to severe chronic migraines that make regular work impossible. My doctor has certified me through May, but my employer just called saying there's a mandatory department restructuring meeting next Tuesday that will determine job assignments and seniority rankings for the next year. They're insisting I attend in person (2 hr meeting) or I'll lose my seniority and possibly my position altogether. I'm terrified this will mess up my disability claim - will EDD consider this as "returning to work" even though it's just one meeting? I don't want to risk losing my benefits when I'm genuinely still unable to work regularly. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I can probably make it through one meeting with medication but definitely can't return to regular work yet.

been there! Same thing happened to my sister last yr - meeting didn't affect her SDI as long as she wasnt getting PAID for those hours. did ur boss put it in writing that ur seniority is at risk? get that in writing!!!!

•Thanks for responding! Yes, they sent an email stating that attendance is "required to maintain current position and seniority status" - so I do have it documented. They didn't mention anything about paying me for the meeting time. Did your sister have to report the meeting to EDD?

I think ur overthinking this. SDI isnt like workers comp where they follow u around lol. Just go to the meeting, dont mention it on ur certifications, and youll be fine. ive worked a few days here and there on disability when i was feeling ok and nothing happened

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to EDD? I was in a similar situation (needed clarification about an in-person training while on disability) and couldn't get through after trying for days. I used claimyr.com and they got me connected to an EDD agent in about 25 minutes. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I HATE THE EDD SYSTEM!!! They make everything so confusing and contradictory. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. If you skip the meeting, you might lose your job. If you go, EDD might say you're able to work and cancel your benefits. Meanwhile you can't even get someone on the phone for a simple question!!!! The whole system is designed to trap people and deny benefits. I've been fighting with them for MONTHS over my claim.

I had a similar situation during my maternity disability last year. My advice is to call your doctor first and ask them if attending this meeting would be consistent with your medical restrictions. If your doctor says it's fine as a one-time exception, get that in writing. Then contact EDD (which I know is difficult). In my case, my doctor wrote a note stating that a 3-hour planning meeting was acceptable as a one-time exception to my disability restrictions, but that I remained unable to perform my regular job duties. I brought this to the meeting and nothing happened with my benefits. The key is documenting everything.

If your migraines are severe enough to qualify for disability, they would also qualify for workplace accommodations. The representative said attending one mandatory meeting to preserve my job status would NOT affect my disability benefits as long as: 1. I'm not performing regular job duties 2. It's a one-time occurrence (not regular work) 3. The duration is brief She noted it in my file as an approved exception. I also got a note from my doctor stating this single meeting is medically acceptable but that I remain unable to perform regular work. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help with this!
