Will EDD SDI send a new debit card for pregnancy disability or reuse my lost 2018 card?
I'm due with my baby in February 2025 and just submitted my pregnancy disability claim through SDI Online. When I was filling out the payment section, I selected the EDD debit card option. The thing is, I already had an EDD debit card from my first pregnancy back in 2018, but I have no idea where that card is now (definitely lost it during our move last year). Does anyone know if EDD will automatically issue me a new debit card for this pregnancy disability claim? Or would they try to deposit funds to my old lost card? I'm getting anxious because my doctor said I might need to start my disability earlier than planned due to complications, and I don't want to deal with payment delays. If they don't automatically send a new one, who do I contact for a replacement? Bank of America or EDD directly? I tried calling EDD but... you know how that goes. Any insights from recent pregnancy disability recipients would be super helpful!

•Oh thank goodness! That's a relief to hear. Did you have to do anything special to get the new card or did it just show up after your claim was approved?

I was in the exact same situation last June. Had a card from 2019 that I lost, and was worried about my pregnancy disability payments. You'll definitely get a new card for this claim - Bank of America automatically issues a new EDD debit card when you have a new claim filed and approved, even if you had one before. If for some strange reason you don't receive a new card within about 7-10 days after your first payment is issued, you would need to contact Bank of America EDD Debit Card customer service at 1-866-692-9374 to request a replacement. That's who handles the cards, not EDD directly. Just make sure your mailing address is correct in your SDI Online account so the card gets sent to the right place!

•Thank you so much for the detailed info! That's good to know about the 7-10 day timeframe. I'll double-check my address in SDI Online right now.

I just went through this NIGHTMARE with EDD!!! They tried sending my disability payments to my old card from 2019 even though I specifically requested a new one!!! I had to call Bank of America EDD department SEVEN TIMES before someone would help me. Each time I was on hold for at least an hour!!! Then when I finally got the new card, they had sent it to my old address from 3 years ago even though my current address was updated in the EDD system!!! So MAKE SURE your address is updated EVERYWHERE! The whole system is designed to make us fail I swear. I nearly missed rent waiting for this to get sorted out. So frustrating!!!!

•Oh no, that sounds terrible! I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. Did you eventually get all your payments? I'm definitely going to double check all my contact info now.

You'll receive a new EDD debit card for your 2025 pregnancy disability claim. Bank of America automatically issues new cards for new claim periods, regardless of whether you had a previous card. Here's what you should know: 1. The new card will be mailed within 7-10 business days after your first payment is processed (not when your claim is approved, but when the first payment is actually issued) 2. If you're concerned about timing, you can still switch to direct deposit through your SDI Online account before your first payment is processed 3. If you don't receive your card within two weeks of your first payment being issued, contact Bank of America's EDD customer service (1-866-692-9374) not EDD 4. Make sure your mailing address is updated in both your SDI Online account AND your Bank of America account if you previously created one If your doctor is suggesting you may need to start disability earlier than planned, you'll want to make sure your medical provider completes and submits the medical certification promptly once you file. That's often where delays occur in pregnancy disability claims.

•Thank you for such a comprehensive answer! I think I'll consider switching to direct deposit actually - that might be more reliable. Do you know if it's easy to change that option after I've already submitted my claim?

•Yes, you can change to direct deposit even after submitting your claim. Just log into your SDI Online account, go to the "Payment Method" section, and select "Change Payment Method." As long as you make the change before your first payment is processed, it will apply to your current claim. If you do it after payments have started, any future payments will go to direct deposit but any in-process payments might still go to the debit card.

Having trouble reaching EDD to check on your debit card situation? I was in a similar position and spent days trying to get through. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD representative in about 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The EDD rep I spoke with confirmed that for pregnancy disability claims, Bank of America automatically issues a new debit card once the first payment is processed, regardless of whether you had a previous card. They also told me you can call Bank of America's EDD card services directly at 1-866-692-9374 if you need to report your old card as lost or have any card-specific questions. Saved me so much frustration compared to the endless busy signals I was getting before.

wait are u talking about disability or paid family leave? they r different things. PFL is what u get after baby is born, disability is before. sounds like you need disability first then PFL

•I'm talking about the pregnancy disability (SDI) that I'll get before the baby is born. I know I'll need to file for PFL separately after delivery. But right now I'm just concerned about the disability portion and making sure I'll get a new debit card for those payments.

•Just to clarify for anyone else reading this thread: In California, pregnant individuals typically qualify for two separate benefits: 1. Disability Insurance (DI) - Usually 4 weeks before delivery and 6-8 weeks after (longer with complications or C-section) 2. Paid Family Leave (PFL) - Can be taken after the disability period ends, up to 8 weeks to bond with new child Each requires separate applications, though they use the same payment method you select. So whatever payment method you choose for disability will typically carry over to PFL.

My wife just went thru this last month for her pregnancy disability. 100% you'll get a new card, but heads up that it can take 2-3 weeks AFTER your first payment is approved to actually get the card. We got a notification that a payment was issued but couldn't access the money until the physical card arrived. Might want to switch to direct deposit if you need the money fast.

•That's really helpful to know about the timing! I'm definitely going to look into switching to direct deposit based on everyone's feedback. Sounds like that might be more reliable.

does anyone know if the waiting week still applies for pregnancy disability? i heard it was waived during covid but came back

•Yes, the 7-day unpaid waiting period for SDI claims (including pregnancy disability) was reinstated after the COVID emergency provisions ended. You won't receive benefits for the first week of your disability period, but you should still claim that week on your certification.

Just wanted to share my recent experience since I was in almost the exact same situation! I had a pregnancy disability claim approved in October and was worried because I couldn't find my old EDD card from 2020. You'll definitely get a new card - Bank of America automatically sends one for each new claim period. Mine arrived about 8 days after my first payment was processed. The card came with a sticker showing the last 4 digits so you know it's the new one. One tip: I actually called Bank of America's EDD line (1-866-692-9374) proactively to report my old card as lost, just to make sure there wouldn't be any confusion. The rep was really helpful and confirmed that the new card would be completely separate from the old one. Good luck with your pregnancy and don't stress too much about the payment logistics - it sounds like you're being proactive by filing early!

•That's such a relief to hear from someone who went through this so recently! I love the tip about calling Bank of America proactively to report the old card as lost - that's really smart and I hadn't thought of that. It sounds like that could prevent any potential mix-ups. Thanks for sharing your timeline too, 8 days is pretty reasonable. And thank you for the well wishes! 🙂

I just went through this exact situation a few months ago! I had lost my EDD card from a previous claim in 2019 and was panicking about my pregnancy disability payments. You'll definitely get a brand new card - Bank of America automatically issues a fresh EDD debit card for every new claim period, even if you had one before. Mine took about 10 days to arrive after my first payment was processed. One thing that really helped me was logging into my SDI Online account and triple-checking that my mailing address was 100% correct, including apartment numbers, spelling, etc. I also took the advice from another member here and called Bank of America's EDD customer service (1-866-692-9374) to proactively report my old lost card. The rep was super helpful and put a note on my account. Honestly, after reading all the experiences here, I'm thinking direct deposit might be the way to go for future claims - seems more reliable than waiting for physical cards. But for your current situation, you should be totally fine with the debit card option you selected. The system is designed to handle lost/old cards from previous claims. Best of luck with your pregnancy and don't stress too much about the payment logistics - you're being really proactive by filing early!
