New EDD SDI claim after cancer - will they automatically send new BofA card?

I recently filed a disability claim after being diagnosed with Lymphoma (different type than my 2021 cancer). My previous EDD benefits from 2021 were paid through Bank of America debit card, but that card expired months ago. I submitted all my paperwork through SDI Online last week, but I'm confused about the payment method. Will EDD automatically issue a new BofA card for this claim, or do I need to contact the bank myself? My oncologist already submitted the medical certification, and my claim status shows 'received' - just worried about how I'll actually get paid once it's approved. Last time the card just showed up, but that was years ago and I'm not sure if the process changed. Anyone dealt with this recently?

They send u a new card automatically dont worry

Thanks for responding! Do you know roughly how long after claim approval the card typically arrives? I'm trying to plan my finances since treatment is expensive.

I went through something similar last year. Yes, EDD will automatically issue you a new Bank of America card once your claim is approved. It usually takes 7-10 business days after approval to receive it in the mail. You don't need to contact the bank at all. Just make sure your mailing address is correct in your SDI Online account. If your old card from 2021 had expired funds on it, you might want to call Bank of America's EDD card services (separate from your claim) to see if those funds can be transferred, but for the new claim, a new card will come automatically.

That's incredibly helpful information, thank you! My address is current in the system, so I'll just keep an eye out for it after approval. Hopefully they process the claim quickly - my doctor submitted everything promptly.

When I had my disabilty claim in January the stupid EDD took FOREVER to approve it even though my doctor sent everything right away. I ended up freaking out because bills were piling up. The BofA card came about 2 weeks after they finally approved me but the whole process took like 6 WEEKS!!!! The system is completly broken!!! Good luck dealing with them - you might need it.

Oh no, that's concerning. Did you ever figure out why it took so long? I'm worried about a similar delay since my treatments don't allow me to work but the bills don't stop coming.

I helped several clients navigate this situation. While EDD does automatically send a new BofA card, there's often a gap between claim approval and receiving the card. If you need to speak with someone at EDD about expediting either the claim or card delivery, Claimyr (claimyr.com) can get you connected to an actual EDD representative quickly. They have a good demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Regarding your specific situation, once approved, your claim should backpay to your disability start date (minus the 7-day waiting period). The BofA card typically arrives 7-14 days after approval, but this varies.

My wife got disability after her surgery in Feb and they sent a new card even tho she had one from maternity leave in 2023. Think they always send new ones for new claims. The card took about 9 days to arrive after they approved her but every situation is probly different

That's reassuring to hear. I'm hoping mine comes quickly after approval too. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm so sorry about your lymphoma diagnosis. I went through breast cancer treatment last year and had to navigate the whole SDI system. One thing to know is that if your treatment will last longer than the initial claim period (which is usually around 6-8 weeks depending on what your doctor certified), you'll need to get extension forms completed. Don't wait until the last minute for those! The BofA card will come automatically, but I highly recommend setting up the automatic transfer feature once you get it. You can set it to automatically move funds from the card to your regular bank account as soon as payments hit. Made things much easier during treatment when I had limited energy to deal with financial tasks. Wishing you healing and strength!

Thank you so much for the kind words and excellent advice. I didn't know about the automatic transfer feature or that I'd need to be proactive about extensions. My treatment plan is for 4 months minimum, so I'll definitely need extensions. This is incredibly helpful!
