EDD Disability Payment Card - When will it arrive after claim approval?

I'm really confused about the EDD Benefit Debit Card situation. My doctor just certified my disability last week and my claim was approved, but I don't have a card to access payments. I thought the card would come automatically before payments started? Some people are mentioning an April 15th deadline - was there some kind of change to how they distribute cards? I've never been on disability before so I don't know if they're supposed to send the card right away or if I need to wait until the first payment is processed. I'm worried because rent is due soon and I was counting on having access to my benefits. Has anyone recently gone on disability and can tell me how long it took to get their payment card?

they send the card AFTER ur claim is approved. took like 10-12 days for my card to show up after my first payment was processed. the april 15 thing is probly something else, maybe taxes?

Thanks! Do they notify you when they mail the card or does it just show up randomly? I'm really anxious about missing it since our mail has been unreliable lately.

The EDD Bank of America debit card is typically sent once your first disability payment is processed, not before you're approved. The cards are issued by Bank of America, not directly from EDD. Here's how it works: 1. Your claim gets approved 2. First payment is processed (you can see this on your SDI Online account) 3. Card is automatically mailed (usually arrives within 7-10 business days) Regarding the April 15th reference - that's not related to the cards themselves. That might be referring to the old transition from paper checks to the debit card system, but that happened years ago. If you already had an EDD debit card from unemployment within the last 3 years, they'll deposit your disability payments to that same card. Otherwise, you'll get a new one.

This is really helpful information! I checked my SDI Online account and it says my first payment was processed yesterday, so hopefully the card will arrive next week. I've never had any EDD benefits before so I'll definitely be getting a new card.

I was PANICKING about this same thing last month!!! My doctor submitted everything and my claim was approved but NO CARD for almost 2 weeks!!! I kept calling their stupid automated number which just said my payment was issued but nothing about a card?? Finally got it 12 days after my first payment was processed. The envelope is super plain and doesn't say EDD on it so don't throw it away thinking its junk mail!!!!

I had a nightmare with this card situation. After waiting 2 weeks and not receiving anything, I found out my card was sent to my old address even though I updated my address on the EDD website. Had to call Bank of America directly at 1-866-692-9374 to get a new card issued. They never tell you this, but EDD and Bank of America have separate address systems! You have to update both independently. Wasted almost 3 weeks of benefits because of this stupid policy.

Oh no, I actually moved about 6 months ago. I updated my address with EDD when I filed my claim, but should I call Bank of America directly too? I don't want to wait forever only to find out they sent it to my old place.

If you're worried about reaching an EDD rep to check on your card status, try Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was pulling my hair out trying to reach someone last month about my missing card and they got me through to a live agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Way better than spending hours redialing and getting disconnected.

I've never heard of this service! I'll definitely check it out if my card doesn't show up soon. The EDD phone system is so frustrating.

The EDD payment system can be confusing. Here's what I know based on recent experience: - New cards are only sent after your first payment is processed - Processing usually takes 1-2 business days after approval - Card mailing takes 7-10 business days (not calendar days) - You can check payment status on SDI Online under "Payment Activity" - The card comes from Bank of America, not EDD If it's been more than 10 business days since your first payment was processed, call Bank of America EDD Debit Card customer service directly at 1-866-692-9374. They handle all card issues, not EDD. The April 15th date isn't related to card issuance - that's likely the tax filing deadline you're thinking of.

This is mostly right except one thing - if you've had ANY EDD benefits in the past 3 years (UI, SDI, or PFL), they use your existing card. They don't automatically send a new one unless your old one expired. That's why some people get confused when no new card arrives.

LOL same!!! I had almost $2800 on mine when it finally came. Paid off my credit card immediately before I could spend it on something stupid 😅

One more thing that might help others reading this thread: you can actually request expedited delivery of your card by calling Bank of America EDD Card customer service. There's a fee (around $10), but they'll send it via express mail in 3 business days. This option doesn't appear on any EDD materials, but it saved me when I was in a bind waiting for my benefits last year.

This is really good to know! I might do this if my card doesn't arrive by next week. Do they just deduct the $10 from my benefit amount?

Yes, they deduct the $10 expedite fee right from your card balance once it's loaded. Just make sure you have enough benefits processed to cover it - if your first payment is only like $50 and you pay $10 for expedited delivery, you'll only have $40 available when the card arrives. But honestly, if you're in a tight spot financially, it's totally worth it to get your card 7+ days earlier!

Just wanted to share my recent experience since I went through this exact situation last month. My disability claim was approved on a Friday, and I was freaking out because I had no idea when the card would come. Here's my timeline: - Claim approved: Friday - First payment processed: Following Tuesday (showed up in SDI Online) - Card arrived: The following Friday (exactly 10 business days later) The card came in a plain white envelope from Bank of America - no EDD logos or anything. I almost missed it because it looked like junk mail! One tip: if you're really stressed about timing, you can create a Bank of America online account once your card arrives and set up text alerts for when payments are deposited. That way you'll know immediately when future payments hit your card. Don't panic if it takes the full 10 business days - that seems to be pretty normal even though it feels like forever when you're waiting for your benefits!

Thank you so much for sharing your timeline! This is exactly what I needed to hear. My claim was approved last Friday and my first payment processed Tuesday, so based on your experience I should expect my card around this Friday. It's reassuring to know that 10 business days is normal - I was starting to worry something went wrong. I'll definitely keep an eye out for that plain white Bank of America envelope so I don't accidentally throw it away!

Hey everyone! I just went through this same stressful situation a few weeks ago, so I totally understand the anxiety about waiting for that card to arrive. Just wanted to add a couple things that helped me: 1. The Bank of America EDD card customer service line (1-866-692-9374) can actually tell you the exact date your card was mailed once it's been sent out. They can't track it like a package, but at least you'll know it's in the mail system. 2. If you're really tight on money while waiting, some people don't know that you can actually go into any Bank of America branch with proper ID and do a teller withdrawal from your EDD card account even before the physical card arrives. You just need to show them your SDI Online account showing the processed payment and they can verify your account. 3. Make sure to activate your card as soon as it arrives! You can do it online or by calling the number on the sticker. Some people wait and then wonder why their next payment doesn't show up. The waiting period really sucks when you need the money, but it will come! Hang in there!

This is incredibly helpful information! I had no idea you could do a teller withdrawal at Bank of America before the card arrives - that could be a lifesaver for people in tight financial situations. I'm definitely going to remember the tip about calling to find out when the card was mailed too. It's so stressful not knowing if it's actually been sent or if something went wrong. Thanks for sharing these practical tips that aren't mentioned anywhere on the official EDD website!

Just wanted to add my recent experience to help others going through this! I was in the exact same boat as you - approved last week and panicking about when the card would arrive. Mine just showed up yesterday, exactly 9 business days after my first payment was processed. The envelope really does look like generic bank mail, so definitely don't throw anything away from Bank of America! One thing that helped my anxiety was setting up the SDI Online account notifications. You can get email alerts when payments are processed, which at least lets you know the money is there even if you can't access it yet. Also, if you're worried about missing the card delivery, you might want to leave a note for your mail carrier or check with neighbors if you live in an apartment building. My mail person almost left it at the wrong unit because the envelope was so plain. The waiting is brutal when you need the money, but based on everyone's experiences here, it seems like 7-10 business days after first payment processing is pretty standard. You should have yours soon!

Thanks for sharing your timeline! This is so reassuring to hear. I'm definitely going to set up those SDI Online notifications right now - that's a great tip about getting email alerts when payments are processed. I never would have thought about leaving a note for the mail carrier either, but that's actually really smart since I'm in an apartment complex where packages sometimes get mixed up. It sounds like I should expect my card sometime next week based on everyone's experiences here. This whole thread has been incredibly helpful - way more informative than anything on the official EDD website!

I went through this exact same stress just a couple months ago! My claim was approved and I kept checking my mailbox every single day like a crazy person waiting for that card. Here's what I learned: The card definitely comes AFTER your first payment is processed, not when you're approved. You can track this on your SDI Online account - once you see "Payment Issued" status, that's when the 7-10 business day countdown starts for the card to arrive. A few things that would have saved me some panic if I'd known: - The envelope is super plain and says "Bank of America" not "EDD" - You can call BoA at 1-866-692-9374 to confirm they mailed it (they'll give you the date it was sent) - If you're really desperate, apparently you can go to any BoA branch with ID and your SDI account info to do a teller withdrawal before the card arrives I was so worried about rent too, but the card showed up exactly when everyone said it would. The waiting is terrible when you need the money, but it's coming! Just keep checking that SDI Online account for your payment status.

This is such great advice! I'm definitely going to save that Bank of America number for when I inevitably start panicking about my card not arriving fast enough. The tip about being able to do a teller withdrawal at BoA branches is something I keep seeing mentioned but had no idea about - that could really help people who are in urgent financial situations while waiting. It's crazy how much more helpful this community is than the actual EDD website or phone system. All these real experiences and timelines are exactly what someone like me needs to hear when going through this process for the first time!

I just went through this exact situation last month! My disability claim was approved on a Wednesday, first payment processed the following Monday, and my card arrived exactly 8 business days later. Here's what really helped me during the wait: - Download the Bank of America mobile app once your card arrives - you can check your balance and transaction history instantly - The card activation process is super quick (can do it online or by phone) - Don't worry about the April 15th thing - that's definitely not related to disability cards One thing I wish I'd known: if you're really strapped for cash while waiting, some grocery stores and pharmacies will let you get cash back even with a debit card that hasn't been activated yet (as long as the funds are loaded). Just need to use it as credit instead of debit. The waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking when bills are due, but based on everyone's experiences here, your card should arrive within the next week or so. Keep checking that plain white envelope from Bank of America - it really does look like junk mail!

Wait, you can use the card for cash back before it's activated? That's something I've never heard before! Are you sure about that? I thought debit cards had to be activated before any transactions would work, even credit transactions. That would be amazing if true since I'm really tight on money right now waiting for my card. Do you remember which stores let you do this, or is it just hit or miss depending on the cashier?
