After certifying for SDI benefits, how long until payment hits EDD debit card?

I certified for my disability weeks last night around 8pm (first time doing this) and I'm getting anxious about when the money will show up on my EDD debit card. My rent is due in four days and I've been without income for almost three weeks while waiting for my claim to process. The claim finally changed from 'pending' to 'paid' status this morning, but still nothing on the card. Is there a standard timeframe for when funds typically appear after certification? I've heard everything from 24 hours to 10 days from different people and the EDD website isn't clear about it. Anyone with recent experience who can share how long it took for them?

Generally it takes 24-48 hours after your claim shows 'paid' status for the funds to appear on your BofA EDD debit card. If this is your first payment, it might take slightly longer (up to 3 business days) because they're setting up the initial deposit. Weekends and holidays don't count as business days. I'd expect you'll see the money by tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest since you certified last night.

Thank you! That's really helpful. I'll try to stop checking my balance every hour then. Do you know if there's a way to set up alerts for when deposits hit the card?

Is this your FIRST payment ever from EDD for this claim? Because if it is, you need to know that the FIRST payment can take 7-10 business days because they're setting up your account and card! All my payments after that first one came in 24-48 hours after showing 'paid' on the website. Don't panic yet - this is normal for first payments!

Yes, it's my first payment for this disability claim. Ugh, 7-10 business days would be a disaster for me with rent due soon. I'm hoping it comes faster since my BofA card is already active from a previous UI claim two years ago.

Congrats on the paid status! Thats actually the hard part. Money usually shows up fast after that. For me it shows up at weird times too, like middle of the night.

Honestly the whole EDD system is total GARBAGE! My last SDI claim took 6 weeks to even get approved and then another WEEK for money to show up on the card. I was literally about to be evicted. And good luck trying to call them - you'll be on hold for 3+ hours if you even get through at all!! The certification system works fine but their payment processing is stuck in the 1990s. So frustrating!!!!

I know the frustration with reaching EDD is real. When I needed to talk to someone about a payment delay, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it worked surprisingly well. They have a system that helps you get through to an actual EDD representative without the endless hold times. I was skeptical at first but they got me connected in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd

Did you check that your Bank of America EDD card is still active? Because they expire after 3 years and if yours expired they would have mailed a new one automatically. If you didn't get it or activate it, that could be why no money is showing up. Just a thought!

That's a great point! I just checked and my card is still valid for another 8 months, so that shouldn't be the issue. I did verify my address was current in the BofA prepaid card portal just to be safe.

Quick update question - has your payment arrived yet? Most first payments do arrive within 3 business days after the claim shows 'paid' status, despite what some are saying about longer timeframes. If it's been more than 3 business days and you still don't have the funds, you might want to contact EDD to make sure there isn't a technical issue with your BofA card connection.

Yes! The money actually showed up this morning around 5:30am. It took about 36 hours from when the status changed to 'paid' on the website. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and advice. For anyone searching this thread later - for me it was: certified Sunday night, showed 'paid' Monday morning, money on card Tuesday early morning.
