EDD benefits after PFL - will my UI go on same card or get a new one?

Hello everyone! I'm in a confusing situation with my benefits. I received a Money Network card for Paid Family Leave about 3 months ago. I went back to work briefly after my PFL ended, but then got laid off last week. I filed for UI benefits and just got the approval email yesterday (yay!). My question is - will EDD deposit my unemployment benefits onto the same Money Network card I already have from my PFL claim? Or should I be expecting a completely new card in the mail? I'm trying to budget for upcoming bills and need to know where my money will be coming from. The EDD website isn't clear about this and I've been on hold for 2+ hours trying to ask someone directly.

In most cases, EDD will use the same Money Network card for both PFL and UI benefits since they're both through the same benefit system. If your PFL card is still active (not expired), they'll typically deposit the UI funds there. You can check if your card is still active by logging into the Money Network mobile app or website. Did you set up direct deposit for your PFL claim? If so, they might use that same method for UI instead of the card.

Thanks! No, I didn't set up direct deposit - I just used the card they sent. I can log into the Money Network site but it only shows my PFL history so far. The card doesn't expire until 2028 according to what's printed on it. I guess I'll just keep checking it daily to see if the UI payments show up there.

They SHOULD use the same card but EDD is SO inconsistent! When I went from disability to unemployment last year, they sent me a whole new card for no reason even though my first one was still active. Then I had to transfer money between them which was annoying. But my cousin went from PFL to UI like you and they used her same card. I think it depends which department processes your claim and if their systems talk to each other properly that day lol

Ugh that's frustrating! I really hope they use the same card because waiting for a new one would put me in a tight spot financially. Did your cousin have to do anything special to make sure they used her same card?

Nope she didnt do anything special! It just showed up in the same card account about 4-5 days after her UI was approved. The transaction history had a different code next to it than her PFL deposits did but the money went to the same place!!!

whats the difference between PFL and SDI? i thought they were the same thing. dont u have to be sick to get either one?

PFL (Paid Family Leave) and SDI (State Disability Insurance) are different programs. PFL is for bonding with a new child or caring for a sick family member. SDI is when YOU are sick or injured and can't work. Both are administered by EDD but they're separate programs with separate eligibility rules. They DO both typically use the Money Network card payment system though.

I've been on hold with EDD for 3 WEEKS trying to sort out this EXACT problem!!! My PFL ended in January, got laid off in February, and approved for UI in March. They DID use my same card BUT there was a 2-week delay because they had to

Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare! I don't see any action items in my account, but now I'm worried there could be some issue I can't see. Did you eventually get your money without having to keep calling them?

Yes, FINALLY got it all sorted but only because I managed to get through to an actual person after dozens of calls. Have you tried using that Claimyr service? My friend recommended it after I was complaining about not being able to reach EDD. It got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com - it was actually really helpful for getting this exact issue resolved.

I haven't heard of Claimyr before. I'll check out that link - at this point I'd try anything to avoid spending another day listening to that hold music! Thanks for the suggestion.

Just wanted to say congrats on getting approved so quickly! I got laid off too and my UI is still pending after 3 weeks. Did you have to do a phone interview or anything?

Thanks! No phone interview for me - my employer didn't contest anything and I had a pretty straightforward layoff situation with a termination letter stating it was due to company downsizing. I think that helped speed things up. I hope yours gets approved soon!

quick tip: if u do end up getting a new card, u can call money network directly & have them transfer the balance from ur old card to the new one. saved me a lot of headache when edd sent me 2 cards last year.

That's really good to know, thank you! Do you happen to have the Money Network phone number handy? I should probably save it just in case.

Just to give you a definitive answer based on EDD's current policies: If your Money Network card is less than 3 years old and still active, they should deposit your UI benefits to that same card. This is part of their effort to streamline benefit delivery across programs. If you don't see the payment within 48 hours of your UI payment showing as 'paid' in your UI Online account, then you should contact EDD directly. \n\nAlso, now is a good time to consider setting up direct deposit if you prefer that over the card - you can do this in your UI Online account under 'Payment Preferences.

Thank you for this detailed information! My card is definitely less than 3 years old so that's reassuring. I'll keep an eye on my UI Online account for the payment status and set up direct deposit for future payments. You've been incredibly helpful!

Just went through this exact situation last month! EDD used my same Money Network card from my SDI claim when I transitioned to UI benefits. The payment showed up about 3 business days after my UI status changed to "paid" in the online portal. One thing to watch for - the UI payments might show up with a slightly different merchant name in your transaction history compared to your PFL payments, but it'll be the same card. You can also download the Money Network app if you haven't already - it sends push notifications when new deposits hit your account which is super helpful for tracking when your benefits arrive!

That's really helpful to know, thank you! The push notification feature sounds great - I'll definitely download the Money Network app right away. It's reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this exact transition. Did you notice any difference in the timing of payments between SDI and UI, or were they pretty consistent once they started?

Hey Diego! I just wanted to share that I went through almost the exact same situation about 6 months ago - had PFL for bonding with my new baby, went back to work for a few weeks, then got laid off due to budget cuts. EDD did use my existing Money Network card from the PFL claim, and my first UI payment showed up about 2 days after my claim status changed to "paid" online. One thing I'd recommend is checking your UI Online account daily because sometimes the payment gets issued before you get any email notification. Also, if you're planning to certify for benefits regularly, definitely consider switching to direct deposit like Anastasia mentioned - the card works fine but direct deposit is usually faster and you don't have to worry about ATM fees when you need cash. Good luck with everything, and congrats on getting approved so quickly!

Thanks for sharing your experience Fatima! That's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same PFL to UI transition. I've been checking my UI Online account obsessively since getting approved yesterday - no payment status change yet but I'll keep watching for it. The direct deposit suggestion makes a lot of sense too, especially about avoiding ATM fees. Did you find the switch from card to direct deposit pretty straightforward to set up in the online portal?
