EDD switched to Money Network - will payment go to old BofA card or new card?

Filed a new claim last week after being laid off from my warehouse job (was previously on unemployment during 2020 with BofA card). EDD just updated my portal saying payment was issued to debit card, but I'm confused because I know they switched from Bank of America to Money Network since my last claim. Will they deposit funds to my old BofA card that I still have, or am I supposed to wait for a new Money Network card in the mail? The payment shows as 'paid' but I haven't received anything in my bank account or old card. Anyone dealt with this transition between the different cards? Getting worried because rent is due soon...

Thanks for the quick reply! Do you know if there's any way to check the status of the new card? My UI Online account just shows 'paid' but doesn't mention anything about a new card being mailed.

The Bank of America EDD debit cards were officially discontinued in July 2023. All new claims now receive Money Network debit cards instead. Your payment won't go to your old BofA card - you'll need to wait for the new Money Network card to arrive in the mail. The first card typically takes 7-10 business days to arrive after your first payment is processed. Once you receive it, you can activate it through the Money Network mobile app or by calling the number on the card. You can also set up direct deposit through UI Online if you prefer not to use the card. Pro tip: Make sure your mailing address is current in your UI Online account so there are no delays with receiving your new card.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll make sure my address is updated. If my payment was issued yesterday, does the 7-10 business day countdown start from then? I'm trying to plan for bills.

I just went through this exact situation last month! Your payment starts processing the moment it shows 'paid' in the system, but the Money Network card takes about 7-10 business days to arrive. The important thing to know is that your money is safe and waiting for you - it's already loaded onto your card account even though you don't physically have the card yet. When the card arrives, you'll need to activate it immediately. I recommend downloading the Money Network mobile app beforehand so you're ready to go. Also, you can set up direct deposit for future payments through UI Online once you're approved - that way you won't have to wait for card transfers in the future. I was anxious about bills too, but the timing worked out okay. The card came in a plain white envelope that could easily be mistaken for junk mail, so watch your mailbox carefully!

This is so helpful, thank you! I'll definitely keep an eye out for that plain envelope. Do you remember if the envelope said anything specific that helped you identify it? I get tons of credit card offers that look similar.

Is anyone else FURIOUS about this whole card transition???? I had the same problem and waited almost THREE WEEKS for my Money Network card while bills piled up! Called EDD 47 times and couldn't get through. The website says "7-10 business days" but that's complete bull. They don't tell you that shipping delays happen ALL THE TIME. And when I finally got the card, the activation process was a nightmare - their app crashed twice while I was trying to set it up. They should have given us more warning about the transition from BofA. The whole system is designed to make you suffer while waiting for YOUR money. Just wait until you try to transfer funds to your bank account - takes another 3-5 days!

I had the exact opposite experience - card came in 5 days and worked fine. maybe depends on your location?

When I had trouble reaching EDD about my card issues last month, I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an EDD agent in about 15 minutes instead of spending days redialing. I was skeptical but it worked really well - they connected me directly to an EDD rep who confirmed when my Money Network card was mailed and gave me the tracking info. Saved me so much stress! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Might be worth checking out if you need specific info about your card shipment or want to see if they can expedite it.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if my card doesn't arrive in the next week. Did they tell you anything specific about how the Money Network cards are shipped? I'm wondering if there's a tracking number somewhere.

Yes! That's exactly what I called about. The EDD rep was able to confirm the exact date my card was mailed and gave me a USPS tracking number. Apparently they can see that in their system but it doesn't show up in our UI Online accounts for some reason. The tracking info was super helpful because I knew exactly which day to expect it.

EDD switched from Bank of America to Money Network cards in July 2023. If you applied recently, you'll definitely be getting a Money Network card, not BofA. The card comes with instructions for activation and use. You can also visit the EDD website for more information about the transition: https://edd.ca.gov/en/Unemployment/Payments

when i got my money network card i just activated it online and then set up direct deposit right away so i dont have to deal with the card anymore. u can do that in ui online under payment preferences its way faster

That's a good idea! I'll definitely set up direct deposit once I get the card. Does the direct deposit option become available right after you activate the card, or is there a waiting period?

Quick update on timing: When I got my Money Network card back in February, they had a backlog and it took closer to 14 business days to arrive. I called EDD (after many attempts) and they said they were experiencing higher volume than usual. Not sure if that's still the case, but just wanted to set realistic expectations. Once you get the card, I recommend immediately setting up the Money Network mobile app. It's actually decent - you can check your balance, set up alerts, and transfer money to your bank account directly from the app without going through UI Online. One thing to watch - there are ATM fees at most places except for MoneyPass ATMs. The app has an ATM locator to find fee-free options near you. Way better than trying to memorize which ones are free!

This is really helpful info, thanks! I'm near downtown so hopefully there are some MoneyPass ATMs nearby. I'll definitely check out the app too.

That's reassuring to hear it might come faster than 7-10 days! Thanks for sharing your experience.
