EDD SDI payment timeline after approval - how long until I get paid?
I just received notification that my disability claim was approved (yay!!!), but now I'm anxiously checking my bank account every few hours wondering when the money will actually show up. My rent is due next week and I'm getting nervous. I've been out of work since March 12th due to a back injury that required surgery, and the medical bills are piling up. For those who've been through this before - once EDD approves your SDI claim, how long does it typically take for them to issue payment? Do they backdate it to when your waiting period ended? I opted for the EDD debit card option if that makes any difference in timing. Any insights would be super appreciated!!!

Congrats on getting approved! In my experience, payment usually arrives within 3-5 business days after approval. They will backdate to cover everything after your 7-day waiting period. If you chose the debit card option and this is your first payment, they'll mail a new card which can take 7-10 business days to arrive. However, the funds are loaded faster, so once you have the card, your money will already be there. Subsequent payments are much quicker since you already have the card.

•Thank you! That's reassuring. Do you know if there's a way to check if they've already sent the payment? The EDD website just shows my claim is approved but doesn't say anything about payment status.

•Ugh, 2 weeks?! I hope mine doesn't take that long. Did you call them to ask about the delay or just wait it out?

The official timeline is typically 3-5 business days for electronic deposit after approval, and 7-10 business days for the debit card to arrive if this is your first time. However, I've worked with many SDI claimants, and I've noticed patterns in payment timing: 1. If you were previously on SDI or PFL in the past 12 months and already have the debit card, payments usually appear within 48-72 hours after approval 2. For first-time claimants, the funds are typically loaded 3-5 days after approval, but you can't access them until the physical card arrives 3. If your approval happened late in the week (Thursday/Friday), the payment processing might not start until the following Monday 4. Yes, they will backdate payments to cover all eligible days after your waiting period One key thing: unlike regular paychecks, SDI payments are exempt from state income tax and sometimes federal tax depending on your situation. So the amount might be higher than you expect!

Omg calling EDD is a NIGHTMARE!!! I tried for THREE DAYS straight when my claim was pending and kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message before it hung up on me!! So frustrating! I was about to give up when someone told me about this service called Claimyr that gets you through to an actual EDD agent. I was skeptical but desperate so I tried it - and it actually worked! Got connected to an agent in about 25 minutes who fixed my claim status issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd and their website is claimyr.com if you need to call EDD about your payment status.

•Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true considering how impossible it is to reach EDD. Has anyone else used it successfully?

so does the card work like a regular debit card? can i use it at atm or stores?

•Yes, it works exactly like a regular debit card. You can use it at stores, ATMs, online, etc. You can even transfer money from it to your personal bank account through the card website or app. There are some ATMs where you can withdraw cash without fees (Bank of America, I think), but others will charge the typical ATM fee.

Just to add some context here - while most payments process quickly after approval, there are specific scenarios that might cause delays: 1. If your approved claim period spans multiple benefit calculation quarters, the system sometimes has to recalculate your weekly benefit amount, which can add a few days 2. If you have any existing overpayments from previous claims (SDI, UI, or PFL), they may offset your current payments, causing delay while they process this 3. Bank holidays can affect the processing time 4. End-of-month system maintenance occasionally causes brief delays The best way to check payment status is through your SDI Online account under "Payment Details." If nothing appears there within 5 business days of approval, that's when I'd recommend calling.

•Oh, I didn't realize benefit amounts could change based on quarters. My claim will definitely span multiple quarters since I'll be recovering for at least 6 months according to my doctor. Does that mean my weekly amount might change partway through my claim?

One more important thing about SDI payments that many people don't realize: your first payment often covers multiple weeks if your claim has been pending for a while. So you might receive a larger lump sum initially (all backdated payments), and then transition to regular weekly/biweekly payments afterward. Also, the payment schedule is based on the certification period, not necessarily calendar weeks. For SDI, most people certify every two weeks, so payments usually follow that same pattern after the initial payment.

•That makes sense - I've been off work since March 12th, so my first payment should cover quite a few weeks minus the waiting period. I submitted my claim on March 19th but it took some time for my doctor to complete their part and then for EDD to process everything. Thanks for explaining!
