Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the EDD website shows your payment was issued but it takes 2-3 days to actually appear on the BoA card? That always makes me nervous lol
Yes, this is normal. There's typically a 24-48 hour processing time between when EDD shows a payment as issued and when Bank of America actually loads it onto your card. The weekend and holidays can extend this time frame further. If it's been more than 3 business days, that's when you might want to contact Bank of America EDD customer service.
Also make sure u certify for ur disability every 2 weeks or they stop paying u!! My sister didn't know and missed a payment because of it.
Wait what? I thought disability was different from unemployment - do I really need to certify every 2 weeks? The paperwork didn't mention that or maybe I missed it. How do I certify?
This is incorrect information. Regular State Disability Insurance (SDI) typically doesn't require bi-weekly certification like unemployment does. Your doctor establishes the disability period, and payments continue automatically through that period. However, there are exceptions: 1. If you have Partial Disability and are working reduced hours, you may need to report wages 2. If you're on Pregnancy Disability transitioning to Paid Family Leave, you'll need to file a separate PFL claim 3. If your doctor extends your disability period, you'll need a new medical certification For standard disability claims, you typically don't need to certify every two weeks. The original commenter may be confusing SDI with unemployment insurance.
For your appeal hearing, key things that help win: 1. Make sure all medical evidence is submitted at least 5 days before hearing 2. Prepare a timeline of your medical treatment 3. If possible, have your doctor attend by phone (they'll rarely come in person) 4. Connect your medical condition directly to your job duties - be specific about what movements/activities cause pain 5. Bring a daily pain/activity journal if you've been keeping one I've helped several friends prepare for SDI appeals, and these approaches significantly improve success rates. The administrative law judges want clear, concrete evidence that connects your medical condition to your inability to work.
The EDD is ALWAYS doing this!!! They start paying people and then randomly stop with NO explanation!! It's so frustrating!! My sister's coworker had her disability payments stopped for SIX WEEKS while they did some stupid "review" and she almost got evicted!!! The system is completely broken and they don't care at all about people suffering. I bet if we were big corporations they'd make sure the money came on time!!!
While I understand your frustration, it's important to note that these reviews are actually designed to prevent fraud and ensure benefits go to eligible claimants. That said, EDD absolutely should communicate better about when reviews are happening and their expected timeframes. The lack of transparency is the real issue here, not necessarily the reviews themselves.
Update: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and was connected to a rep in about 15 minutes. The representative confirmed exactly what many of you said - my retroactive claim is under routine review since it spans both SDI and PFL programs. She said the review should be completed by next week, and if approved, the remaining payments will be released all at once. Such a relief to finally get an answer! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.
So I just had a friend who works at a doctor's office tell me that EDD is actually LOSING some of the medical certifications right now!!! She said make sure your doctor's office can confirm that EDD received it, not just that they sent it. Apparently there's some glitch in their new system!!
This is partially accurate. There's not a widespread issue of "losing" certifications, but there is a known issue where certain electronic submissions aren't properly attaching to claims if they're submitted with specific software versions. Your doctor's office should be able to check the submission status through their provider portal. If they show it was successfully received but it's not appearing on your claim, that's when you need to contact EDD directly.
GOOD NEWS! My claim was just approved this morning! Total wait time was 24 days from submission to approval. The payment is already showing as processing in my account. Thanks everyone for your help and reassurance!

something similar happened to me back in 2023... my employer "lost" my paperwork twice and I ended up having to pay for urgent care out of pocket initially! the system is so broken. make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING and take pictures of any forms before you submit them to your employer.

Update us on how things go! If your employer continues to be unresponsive, you may need to escalate this matter. The California Division of Workers' Compensation has an Information & Assistance Unit that can intervene. They can be reached at 1-800-736-7401. Also, just to reiterate because it's important: temporary disability payments through workers' comp are different from SDI. Workers' comp TD payments are approximately 66.67% of your average weekly wages (with minimum and maximum limits) and are tax-free. The first 3 days are not paid unless you're off work for more than 14 days or hospitalized.

•Thanks for the follow-up information and phone number! I finally got hold of someone in HR today who apologized for the delay and is emailing me the DWC-1 form. They also gave me their workers' comp insurance carrier info, so I'll be calling them directly tomorrow. Will update when I hear more!
