If your claim has been processing for 3 weeks, there might be an issue with your medical certification. Did your doctor complete the medical portion properly? That's often what causes delays. You should also check if there are any alerts in your SDI Online account that might indicate missing information. Sometimes they need additional documentation but don't clearly communicate that to you. The disability phone system is overwhelmed since the pandemic, so getting through requires persistence and patience.
UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD SDI! Called right at 8:00am and only had to wait 45 minutes. They told me my claim was delayed because they needed additional information from my employer. They're sending a request form today. The agent said once they receive that info, my claim should be processed within 7-10 days. Hope this helps!
That's super helpful, thank you! I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow. Did you press any specific options when you called? I want to make sure I get to the right department.
My wife went through something similar last year and we discovered that California actually has laws about how fast doctors have to complete disability forms! I think they're supposed to do it within 10 business days. You could mention this to the doctor's office. Remind them they have a legal obligation to complete these forms in a timely manner. That got my wife's doctor moving pretty quickly!
Really?? I had no idea there was a legal timeframe! That's exactly the kind of leverage we need right now. I'll definitely have my husband mention this when he goes in tomorrow. Thank you so much!
UPDATE: My husband went to the doctor's office today with donuts (lol thanks for that suggestion!) and spoke directly with the office manager. He explained our financial situation and mentioned the legal timeframe for completing forms. The office manager was super apologetic and promised the forms would be completed and faxed to EDD by tomorrow! She even gave him a copy for our records with the doctor's signature. Fingers crossed that EDD processes everything quickly now! Thank you all for your help - this forum has been a lifesaver! ❤️
That's fantastic news! The combination of persistence, politeness, and pastries works wonders! Now make sure to follow up with EDD once the forms are submitted to ensure they process everything correctly. If you have trouble reaching them by phone, try using SDI Online to send a secure message explaining the situation as well.
One more thing I wanted to add - make sure your doctor specified the correct extended date on their form. I've seen cases where doctors accidentally put the wrong end date, and then patients had to go through the whole extension process again. When you call EDD to confirm they received your extension, also ask them what the new end date is showing in their system.
Also, just to clarify since I see some confusion in the thread - your pregnancy disability can transition to Paid Family Leave (PFL) after you recover from childbirth. That's a separate benefit that gives you time to bond with your baby. You'll need to file a new claim for that when your disability ends. The standard is up to 8 weeks of pregnancy disability after delivery for vaginal births (longer for C-sections), then up to 8 weeks of PFL for bonding. Just something to keep in mind for future planning!

For anyone finding this thread later, this is a really common issue with EDD SDI claims - whether pregnancy-related or other disability types. The April/May payment gaps often happen due to quarterly review processes. Always keep an eye on your claim, and if payments suddenly stop, don't wait - take immediate action to contact EDD. Address changes are also one of the most common triggers for payment delays.
