Missing SDI payments after transitioning to PFL - how to get my 5 remaining days paid?
I just transitioned from SDI to Paid Family Leave on March 11th, and noticed that on March 18th my PFL payment came through for about 10 days. Great, except I'm still missing payment for the last 5 days of my SDI claim that should have been paid before the transition! I've checked my SDI Online account and it shows my SDI claim as 'closed' but there's nothing about these missing days. Do I need to file some special form to get paid for those remaining SDI days? Has anyone else dealt with this gap between SDI and PFL? My rent is due next week and I'm counting on that money. I tried calling EDD but after 2 hours on hold the call dropped. Help!

same thing happpened to me in january. you have to call and tell them about the gap. they need to manually adjust it or something.

•Ugh, calling again sounds like a nightmare. Did you have to wait forever to get through? Any tricks to reaching a real person?

This is actually a common transition issue between SDI and PFL. What happened is that your SDI claim was automatically closed when your PFL claim was established, but the system doesn't always process those final days correctly. You need to contact EDD to have them manually adjust your SDI claim to include those missing days. Make sure you have your claim numbers for both SDI and PFL ready, as well as the exact dates in question. The representative will need to create what's called a "gap payment" to cover those 5 days. They should be able to verify the dates in their system and see that you're missing those payments.

•Thank you for explaining that! I didn't realize it was a "gap payment" issue. Do they typically require any documentation from me beyond the claim numbers and dates?

I had something kinda similar when I went from PFL back to SDI last year. It took FOREVR to get it fixed. The first rep I talked to made it worse somehow and then I had to call back 3 more times. So frustrating!!

•YES THIS! The system is totally broken! I'm convinced they design it this way on purpose so people give up trying to get their money. I had to call 27 TIMES before someone helped me with my claim. TWENTY-SEVEN!!

I've handled this exact situation before. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the EDD SDI customer service number (not the general EDD number) 2. Request to speak with a claim specialist who handles transition issues between SDI and PFL 3. Specifically use the term "gap payment" as the previous commenter mentioned 4. Have your Notice of Computation handy if you received one, along with both claim numbers 5. Ask them to verify the end date of your SDI claim and start date of your PFL claim to prove there's a gap They should be able to process an adjustment payment for those missing days. It will typically be processed within 7-10 business days after approval.

•This is super helpful! I didn't know I needed to ask for a claim specialist specifically. I'll try calling again tomorrow morning right when they open.

I tried calling EDD about 15 times last week for a similar issue (mine was with certification dates though, not SDI/PFL gap). I couldn't get through AT ALL until I used Claimyr. It got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying on my own for days. Worth checking out their site claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The agent I spoke with fixed my issue in about 10 minutes once I actually got through to someone who knew what they were doing.

•Is that service really worth it? I've never heard of it before. How does it actually work? Seems kinda sketchy that you'd need to pay someone just to talk to a government agency we already pay taxes for...

•It's basically a call-back service that navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line. When they get an agent, they connect you. I was skeptical too but after wasting 3 days trying to get through myself, it was worth it to me. They don't actually talk to EDD for you - they just get you connected to an actual person.

dont forget to ask for retro payment too. they should back pay you from when the days were supposed to be paid

One other important thing: when you do get through to EDD, make sure they don't accidentally create a new claim instead of just fixing the gap. I've seen cases where the representative created a whole new short claim instead of just processing the missing days from the original claim, and this created even more complications. Be very clear that you're asking for the missing days from your existing SDI claim that ended on March 10th (the day before your PFL began).

•That's a great point - thank you! I'd hate to make this situation more complicated. I'll be very specific about just needing those missing days processed, not a new claim.

did u check ur SDI online account payment history? sometimes it shows pending payments that haven't been issued yet. mine showed pending for like a week before i got paid

•Yes, I checked the payment history section thoroughly and there's nothing pending for those 5 days. The last payment shows as March 6th for the week before, then nothing until the PFL payment started on the 18th. It's like those 5 days just disappeared from the system.

Make sure you're looking at the right benefit type too. I almost missed a payment because I was looking at my SDI history when the payment had been incorrectly processed under my PFL claim even though the dates were from my disability period. The EDD systems don't communicate with each other as well as they should.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get this resolved? I'm curious if any of the suggestions worked for you.

•SUCCESS! I finally got through this morning using the Claimyr service someone recommended. The claim specialist found the issue right away - apparently when my doctor submitted the PFL paperwork, the dates overlapped with my SDI by 2 days, which confused the system. They're processing a gap payment for the 5 days and said I should see it deposited within 48 hours. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!
