EDD SDI payment timeline after approval + application questions when doctor has no online access
I just got approved for disability last week (broke my leg in two places and needed surgery), and I'm hearing conflicting information about how long it'll take to actually get paid. My neighbor swears it takes 6 weeks AFTER approval before any money hits your account. Is that right?? I'm seriously worried about making rent next month. Also - my orthopedic surgeon is old school and doesn't have access to the EDD online portal (or maybe just doesn't use it?). What's the best way to submit my application in this case? Should I print out the paperwork and bring it to him? Pick up forms somewhere? I'm totally new to this process and could use some guidance on getting everything started efficiently. Thanks for any help! I'm stressing about covering bills while I recover.

NO it doesnt take 6 weeks after approval!! your neighbor is wrong. once your approved the payments come pretty quick, like within a few days if u have direct deposit. i broke my ankle last yr and got paid within 3 days of approval. the WHOLE PROCESS can take about 4-6 weeks from when u first file until approval if theres problems or they need more info but not after approval!!

•Oh thank god! That's such a relief to hear. I was having a minor panic attack thinking I'd have to wait until mid-April to get any money.

For your doctor who doesn't use SDI Online, you have two options: 1. You can start your claim online through SDI Online, print the form (called a DE 2501), and take it to your doctor to complete their portion and mail it in. 2. You can request a paper claim form by calling EDD at 1-800-480-3287 or picking one up at an EDD office, complete your portion, then have your doctor fill out their part and mail it in. The first option is usually faster since your part gets processed immediately online. Just make sure your doctor completes the form and mails it promptly - that's the most common delay in disability claims.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll go with option 1 since I can at least get my part done online right away. Do you know how long the doctor typically has to submit their portion once I've completed mine?

Your doctor has to submit the medical certification within 30 days of the start of your disability. The clock is already ticking if you've been off work due to your injury, so don't wait! From my experience (I process these forms for a medical office), the biggest delay is usually doctors taking too long to complete their portion. Be proactive - call the doctor's office, explain your financial situation, and ask if they can prioritize completing your form. Some offices batch process disability paperwork on specific days of the week, so knowing their schedule helps. Regarding payment after approval: with direct deposit, funds typically arrive within 1-2 business days of claim approval. With the EDD debit card option, it might take 5-7 days for the first payment since they need to mail the card. Subsequent payments are faster.

•This is exactly what I needed to know! I'll be super proactive with the doctor's office. And I'll definitely set up direct deposit - every day counts right now financially.

I waited OVER TWO MONTHS for my disability payment last year!!! The EDD is HORRIBLE about processing claims quickly. I filed online, my doctor sent in his part right away, and then NOTHING for weeks and weeks. Calling was useless - could never get through. By the time I got paid I was already almost back to work!!! The whole system is broken.

•That's unusual for a straightforward claim. Was there something specific that caused the delay? Did you get any notices requiring additional information? Sometimes there are medical inconsistencies that need clarification, or employer wage verification issues that hold things up.

btw the waiting time to talk to someone at EDD is like 3+ hrs or they just hang up on u when u call. i was going crazy trying to check on my claim status. i finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual EDD rep in like 20 mins. they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd it was worth it cuz i found out there was a problem with my claim that i needed to fix right away. saved me weeks of waiting.

•I might need this if I run into any issues! The idea of waiting on hold for hours with a broken leg while stressing about money sounds like torture. Bookmarked, thank you!

Does anyone know if the 7-day waiting period is still a thing? My friend said I won't get paid for the first week I'm disabled no matter what.

•Yes, the 7-day waiting period is still applicable for SDI claims in 2025. You won't receive benefits for the first 7 days of your disability claim - it's essentially a deductible period. However, the waiting period only applies once within a benefit year, so if you have another disability claim within the same 12-month period, you wouldn't serve another waiting period. Important: Start your claim as of the first day you became disabled, not after the waiting period. The waiting period will be automatically calculated by EDD.

make sure u dont make any mistakes on ur part of the application. my roomate put the wrong date and it delayed everything by like 3 weeks!!!

Also important: If your doctor completes a paper form, make sure they include their license number and address clearly. Missing or illegible information is one of the top reasons the EDD contacts medical providers for clarification, which can delay your claim processing by 1-2 weeks.

•Good point. I'll double-check the form before I leave the office to make sure everything's filled out completely.
