How quickly can EDD approve SDI benefits? Fastest approval timelines?

I just submitted my disability claim last Thursday after herniated disc surgery and I'm already stressing about how long it'll take to get approved. My doctor submitted the medical certification through SDI Online the same day. Bills are piling up FAST and I need to know when I might see some money. Curious - what's the absolute fastest anyone here has gotten their EDD SDI claim approved? Like from submission to seeing that first payment hit your account? Any tricks to speed things up? My HR dept said it could take 2-3 weeks but that seems like forever when you're watching your bank account drain!!

I got approved in 7 days last winter. Filed online on a Monday, doctor submitted certification Tuesday, and I got the EDD debit card the following Monday with my first payment. I think it really depends on your doctor's office being on point with their paperwork. No errors on the medical certification form makes a huge difference.

7 DAYS?? That's amazing. Did you have to call them or anything? My doctor's office said they submitted everything correctly but who knows...

5 weeks?! That's what I'm afraid of. Did you try calling them to speed things up?

The official EDD guideline is that most SDI claims are processed within 14 days if there are no issues with your application. Here are some factors that affect processing time: 1. Completeness of your application - any missing information will delay it 2. How quickly your healthcare provider submits their certification 3. Whether your employer responds promptly to EDD's request for wage information 4. Current claim volume at EDD (certain seasons are busier) 5. Any discrepancies between your information and your employer/doctor records In my experience working with disability claims, the fastest I've seen was 9 days from filing to payment, but the average is closer to 2-3 weeks. Make sure your claim shows "received" not just "submitted" in the SDI Online portal.

Thanks for the detailed info! Mine shows "received" and "pending" so I guess that's good? I just hate the waiting game.

FASTEST? Friend of mine got hers in 5 days! But that was like right after COVID when they were apparently pushing claims through super fast. I think that's totally not normal though. Mine took 18 days earlier this year for pregnancy disability.

If you need to speak with someone at EDD about speeding up your claim, good luck getting through on the phone. I spent TWO WEEKS trying to reach someone about my delayed SDI claim - constantly getting disconnected or told to call back later. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I actually talked to someone, they found the issue with my claim (employer reported different wages) and fixed it right away. Payment came 2 days later.

does that service actually work? sounds too good to be true lol

It worked for me! After wasting hours trying to get through myself, it was worth it to finally talk to an actual person who could help with my claim.

I filed for disability last year when I broke my ankle and couldn't do my nursing job. The first time I filed it took 26 days to get approved because I made a stupid error on the form. The second time (for the same injury when I needed surgery), I triple-checked everything and it was approved in 10 days. If you're really worried about money while waiting, you should check if your employer offers any short-term disability insurance that might kick in faster than state disability. Some employer plans pay out while you're waiting for EDD to approve your claim.

Good idea about the employer plan. I'll check with HR tomorrow. Really hoping it doesn't take 26 days though!

Just to update everyone with current information: EDD has been experiencing higher claim volumes in 2025, so processing times have increased slightly. The 14-day guideline is still their target, but many claims are now taking 14-21 days even without issues. If your claim shows "pending" for more than 21 days, that usually indicates there's a specific issue that needs to be resolved. At that point, contacting EDD directly is your best option.

Thanks for the update. Just hit day 6 of waiting and getting more anxious. I'll give it another week before I start calling them.

Quick update for anyone following this thread or finding it later - my claim was approved today! That makes it 12 days total from submission to approval. My first payment should be deposited in the next 24-48 hours according to the portal. Not as fast as some of you, but way better than 5 weeks! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.

That's great news! 12 days is actually pretty good in the current environment. Glad it worked out.

Congrats on getting approved! 12 days is definitely reasonable given everything I'm hearing about current processing times. I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - filed my SDI claim 8 days ago after a work injury and checking the portal obsessively lol. Did you get any notification when it switched from "pending" to "approved" or did you just have to keep checking? Also hoping my recovery goes smoothly like yours hopefully will!

Hey Andre! I got an email notification when my status changed to approved, but I was also checking the portal multiple times a day (probably way too often lol). The email came around 6am and when I logged into SDI Online it showed "Approved" with the payment amount. Honestly those 8 days you've already waited will fly by - I know it doesn't feel like it when bills are stacking up! Fingers crossed yours comes through soon and your recovery goes well too. Work injuries are the worst timing.

Thanks for sharing your timeline - 12 days is actually pretty encouraging! I'm on day 4 of waiting for my SDI approval after knee surgery and this thread has been super helpful. It sounds like as long as everything was submitted correctly the first time, most people are getting approved within that 2-3 week window. The horror stories about months-long waits seem to be when there are errors or missing documentation. Really hoping mine goes as smoothly as yours did!

You're so right about the documentation being key! I was super paranoid about making sure everything was perfect after reading some of the delay stories here. My doctor's office was really good about double-checking the medical certification before submitting it, which I think made a huge difference. Day 4 is still early - you've got this! Knee surgery recovery is no joke, so I hope your claim gets approved quickly and your healing goes well. This community has been such a lifesaver for managing the stress of waiting!

As someone who just went through the SDI approval process myself (got approved last month), I'd recommend calling the EDD customer service line around 8:02 AM - right when they open. I know everyone says they never answer, but I actually got through on my third try that way. The rep was able to tell me exactly what stage my claim was in and confirmed there were no issues holding it up. Also, if you haven't already, make sure to check that your employer submitted their portion correctly. Mine was delayed by 4 days because my HR department initially sent incomplete wage information to EDD. Once that got sorted out, approval came within 48 hours. The whole process took 16 days total but would've been 12 if not for the employer delay. Hope your recovery goes smoothly and your approval comes through soon! Herniated disc surgery is rough - been there myself.
