Won ESD appeal but payment marked as 'paid' not showing in bank account yet
I finally won my appeal with ESD after fighting for almost 6 weeks! My account shows the payment was processed and marked as "paid" on January 1st (Sunday), but it's now Wednesday and I still don't see anything pending in my bank account. The payment status literally says "paid" not "processing" or anything else. The amount is pretty significant - about $4,850 in back benefits. Does ESD take extra time to actually deposit funds after marking them as paid? I'm trying not to panic but my landlord is breathing down my neck and I told him I'd have the money this week. Has anyone else experienced a delay between the "paid" status and actual deposit?

Congrats on winning your appeal! The "paid" status just means ESD has approved the payment on their end, but it typically takes 2-3 business days for the funds to actually hit your bank account. Since January 1st was both a Sunday AND a holiday, today would really be the first business day the payment would start processing. I'd expect to see it by Friday at the latest. If you don't see it by Monday, then I'd start trying to contact ESD.

•Thank you! That's a relief to hear. I completely forgot about the holiday aspect. I'll wait until Friday before I start to worry then.

WOOHOO on winning!! i had this EXACT thing happen in november. ESD said mine was paid on a monday but it didnt actually show up until thursday morning. ESD uses an ancient system and banks dont process things instantly especially for gov payments. your landlord might have to wait a couple more days but at least you have proof it's coming if they get pushy!!

•That's so good to hear! I took a screenshot of the payment page just in case my landlord wants proof. At least I know it's normal now.

The timing depends partly on your bank too. ESD initiates the ACH transfer when they mark it as "paid," but then it goes through the federal banking system and finally your bank's internal processing. Direct deposits from ESD typically take 2-4 business days to complete, and holidays/weekends don't count as business days. January 1st was both a Sunday and a federal holiday, so your payment likely didn't start processing until January 2nd at the earliest. Different banks also have different policies on when they make funds available after receiving an ACH transfer - some make the money available immediately while others may hold it for 24 hours.

•That makes perfect sense. I bank with a credit union and sometimes they do take longer to process things. Sounds like I just need to be patient for a couple more days.

I had this same problem when I won an appeal last year. I called ESD every day trying to find out where my money was, but could never get through. I was going crazy until I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 15 minutes who was able to verify my payment was definitely on the way. Saved me so much stress. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent confirmed everything was fine and explained that large back-payments sometimes take a full 5 business days to process through their system. My money showed up the next day.

•I'll definitely check this out if my payment doesn't show up by Monday. I've tried calling ESD before and it's a nightmare. Thanks for the recommendation!

I don't want to worry you, but double-check your payment method in your ESD account. I once had a payment marked as "paid" but it was trying to send it to an old closed bank account. The system will still say "paid" even if there's a problem with where they're sending it. If your banking info is correct, then just wait a few more days like others said. But if there's even a small typo in your account number, you'll need to contact ESD immediately to fix it.

•Just checked and my banking info is correct. I've received smaller payments before to this same account, so I think the system has the right info. Thanks for the suggestion though - definitely something I hadn't considered!

anyone else notice that ESD's system is always extra slow around holidays? it's like their computers go on vacation too lol. my sister works for the state (not ESD) and says their whole system runs batch processes that get all backed up if there's a holiday.

One more thing to add - if you filed your weekly claims during the adjudication period, they should all be included in this payment. But if you didn't file weekly claims while waiting for the appeal decision, you may need to contact ESD about retroactively filing those weeks. The large payment amount suggests you're probably getting multiple weeks of back benefits, which is good. Just be aware that large payments sometimes trigger additional verification steps in the banking system, which can add an extra day or two to processing time.

•Yes, I kept filing every week even during the appeal. The payment amount represents 7 weeks of benefits including the additional $300 federal supplement. I'll keep an eye out for it tomorrow and Friday.

Wait till next Monday before freaking out. My last payment took 6 days to hit my account after showing "paid" and ESD wouldn't do anything about it because their system showed it was already paid. The whole system is broken if you ask me. But your money will come... eventually. This state's unemployment system is a joke.

•totally agree!! I had to wait 17 WEEKS for my initial claim to be approved last year! then they wonder why people get desperate and panicky about when money will arrive

UPDATE: Money hit my account this morning! Thanks everyone for the reassurance and advice. For anyone with the same question in the future - my timeline was: Sunday (holiday) marked as "paid" in the ESD system → funds appeared in bank account early Thursday morning. So about 3 business days total.
