Will ESD unemployment payments process on MLK Day 2025?

Anyone know if ESD processes unemployment payments on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? My weekly claim was approved yesterday, but I'm wondering if the holiday will delay my deposit until Tuesday or Wednesday? This is my first time filing during a federal holiday and I've got rent coming up. Thanks!

Federal holidays like MLK Day typically delay ESD payment processing by one business day. Since banks are also closed today, even if ESD did process it (which they don't), it wouldn't hit your account until tomorrow at the earliest. Plan for Wednesday to be safe.

Thanks for the quick reply! Wish they mentioned this somewhere on the ESD website when I filed yesterday.

Same! I don't understand why they can't run an automated payment system that works on holidays. It's not like actual humans need to process each payment manually in 2025!

I got my payment today and it was a holiday last year too. Check your account, might be there already!

This is incorrect information. ESD does NOT process payments on federal holidays like MLK Day. Their systems follow the federal banking holiday schedule. What likely happened is you're seeing a pending transaction that was processed the previous business day.

For anyone struggling to get clarity on payment delays, I had the same issue last month with the Christmas holiday. I couldn't get through to ESD for days because of the call volume. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - completely worth it when you need to know exactly when your payment will arrive, especially with bills due.

Just to clarify for everyone: ESD follows the standard federal banking holiday schedule. Here's what typically happens with payments: 1. If you file your weekly claim on Sunday before a Monday holiday 2. Claim gets approved but processing is delayed until Tuesday 3. Most direct deposits hit accounts on Wednesday 4. Paper checks will be mailed Tuesday, arriving Thursday or Friday This applies to MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, etc. Always plan for a one-day delay after any federal holiday.

This is super helpful! Just checked my ESD account and it shows "pending payment" status now. Sounds like I should expect it Wednesday based on what you're saying.

The whole system is RIDICULOUS! Why can't they program their computers to process payments regardless of holidays?? I've been on UI for 4 months and EVERY holiday causes delays. Meanwhile bills don't wait and my landlord doesn't care about federal holidays! This is how they keep people struggling!!

To answer your original question: No, ESD does not process unemployment payments on MLK Day or any federal holiday. The banking system that ESD uses operates on the federal reserve schedule, which observes all federal holidays. Even if ESD wanted to process payments, the ACH system they use for transfers would not be operational today. For future reference, you can find the federal holiday schedule on the ESD website under Payment Information FAQ. Always add one business day to your expected payment date when a holiday occurs.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'll check out that FAQ section for future reference. Really appreciate everyone's help - I can stop refreshing my bank account now and just plan for Wednesday.
