ESD Payment Delay Question - Will Labor Day (8/2) Affect My Regular Monday Payment?
I've been filing my weekly claim every Sunday for the past few months and usually get my ESD unemployment deposit on Monday morning by 8 AM. But I just realized August 2nd is Labor Day (a bank holiday). Does anyone know how this will affect my payment? Will it still process as normal since ESD is automated, or will I have to wait until Tuesday? I've got rent due and need to figure out my timing. Has anyone dealt with this situation before with holidays?

Just a heads up - Labor Day is actually in September (first Monday), not August 2nd. August 2nd 2025 is a Saturday, so that's not a holiday. But to answer your general question about holidays: When a bank holiday falls on a Monday, ESD still processes claims on their end, but the actual deposit to your account typically gets delayed until Tuesday morning because banks don't process transactions on federal holidays.

•Omg I'm so embarrassed! You're right, I got my holidays mixed up. Thank you for the info though - it's good to know for when actual holidays do come around. So basically ESD still does their part but the bank holds it until the next business day?

•That's correct. To add some detail: ESD processes claims 7 days a week, but the actual transfer of funds is dependent on banking systems. Federal Reserve banks and most financial institutions are closed on federal holidays, which prevents the ACH transfers from completing. So while ESD may approve your payment on a holiday, the money won't move until the next business day. If you're on direct deposit, payments approved on a holiday Monday would arrive Tuesday. If you use the ESD debit card, sometimes the funds appear slightly faster because it's an internal transfer within U.S. Bank's system.

Wait I thought Labor Day was the first Monday in September? Not August?

•You're right, Labor Day 2025 will be Monday, September 1st, not August 2nd. But for any federal holiday that falls on a Monday (like Labor Day, Memorial Day, etc.), your UI payment will typically be delayed by one day. Just something to plan for with your bills.

If you ever need to speak directly with ESD about payment timing or other issues, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was stuck in payment pending for weeks and couldn't get through on the regular ESD phone line. Claimyr got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Much better than spending days hitting redial!

Adding one more important detail: If you have urgent financial needs and your payment will be delayed due to a holiday, you might qualify for a hardship payment. You would need to call ESD and explain your situation (rent due, etc.). This isn't guaranteed, but in some cases, they can expedite payment processing. Keep in mind that hardship considerations are case-by-case, and you'll need to provide specific details about your financial emergency.

•I didn't know about hardship payments - that's really good to know! Fortunately, since I got my dates mixed up and August 2nd isn't actually a holiday, I should be fine. But I'll remember this for future reference. Thank you!
