Will ESD unemployment payments be delayed because of today's holiday?

Just did my weekly claim yesterday like usual but then remembered today is a federal holiday. Does anyone know if this means our payments will be delayed? I'm counting on that money for rent and can't really afford to wait an extra day or two. The ESD website doesn't say anything about holidays that I could find. Thanks!

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Did they at least notify you about the delay?

It depends on your payment method. Direct deposit typically gets delayed by one business day during federal holidays. If you're using the ReliaCard, it can sometimes be delayed by 2 business days depending on when the holiday falls during the processing cycle. ESD processes claims on their end, but the actual payment delivery depends on the banking system which doesn't operate on federal holidays. Make sure to account for this delay when planning your budget!

Thanks for explaining! I have direct deposit so hopefully it's just the one day. Wish they'd make this clearer on their website.

THEY NEVER TELL U ABOUT THE HOLIDAY DELAYS!!! I've been on UI for 6 months and missed my power bill deadline TWICE because of this!!! ESD should automatically adjust the payment schedule when they KNOW theres gonna be a delay. So tired of this system failing us when we need it most!!!

You can actually set up alerts in your ESD account to get notifications about payment processing. Go to your eServices portal, click on settings, then notification preferences. I recommend setting up both email and text alerts so you always know when your payment is processed.

If you're in a rush to check on your payment status, I'd recommend trying Claimyr to get through to an ESD agent directly. I was in a similar situation last month with a holiday delay plus some weird 'pending' status on my claim, and I couldn't get through on the phones for days. Used their service at claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes who confirmed my payment was processing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Super helpful when you need immediate answers about your money.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check that out if my payment doesn't show up tomorrow. Getting actual info from a real person would definitely help my anxiety right now.

this happens everytime there's a holiday but noone remembers lol. its just how banks work not really ESD's fault

Maybe not their fault but they could AT LEAST warn people!!! Not everyone knows how the banking system works especially first time claimants!

When I was on unemployment last year I had a similar worry about holiday delays. My landlord wasn't very understanding about late payments, so I ended up calling my bank directly to ask when ACH transfers would be processed after the holiday. That might help give you a concrete answer for your specific situation. Also, just a tip - I started filing my weekly claims on Sunday morning instead of waiting until Monday, and that seemed to make the payments arrive a bit faster overall.

That's really smart about filing on Sunday! I'll definitely start doing that. Thanks for the practical advice!

To give you the official information: Yes, payment processing is affected by federal banking holidays. When you submit your weekly claim, ESD typically processes it within 1-2 business days. However, once processed, the actual transfer of funds doesn't occur on banking holidays. If you normally receive payment on Mondays and today is a holiday, expect your payment on Tuesday. This applies to both direct deposit and ReliaCard options. You can always check your payment status in eServices under

No, I don't work for ESD. I just went through a long unemployment period last year and spent a lot of time learning how the system works. Had to become something of an expert out of necessity!

UPDATE: My payment just posted this morning! So it was delayed by one day as many of you said. Thanks everyone for your help and advice! Going to start filing on Sundays from now on to avoid cutting it so close in the future.

Glad to hear it came through! Yes, Sunday filing is definitely the way to go. It gives the system maximum processing time before the weekend hits again.

Really glad your payment came through! For anyone else dealing with this in the future, I've found that the ESD mobile app actually shows payment processing status pretty clearly - you can see when it moves from "processed" to "paid" which helps with the anxiety of waiting. Also, if you're ever really stuck and need to talk to someone at ESD, calling right when they open (usually 8am) gives you the best chance of getting through without being on hold forever.
