Do holidays affect Washington ESD unemployment payments 2023 - confused about timing
I'm really confused about how holidays impact my weekly unemployment payments from Washington ESD. I filed my weekly claim on Sunday like always, but with all the holidays this year I'm not sure if that affects when I actually get paid. Does Washington ESD process payments on holidays? Do they delay everything by a day or two? I'm on a tight budget and need to know when to expect my deposit. Anyone know how this works?

Washington ESD doesn't process payments on federal holidays, so yeah it can delay things. If the normal processing day falls on a holiday, they usually process the next business day. But it's not always consistent in my experience.

•So if I filed Sunday and Monday was a holiday, would it be Tuesday instead of the usual Monday processing?

Malik Jenkins
•Usually yes, but sometimes it takes an extra day for the banks to catch up too. I'd expect Tuesday or Wednesday to be safe.

This happened to me during Memorial Day weekend. My payment was delayed by 2 days because the banks were also closed. It's frustrating when you're counting on that money.

•Ugh that's exactly what I was worried about. Did you get any notification from Washington ESD about the delay?

•Nope, no heads up at all. Just had to wait and check my account obsessively lol

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months trying to get through to someone about payment delays during holidays. The phone lines are impossible - I spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Recently found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in like 10 minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth it if you need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

•Wait really? I've been trying to call for weeks with no luck. Does this actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate to get answers about my claim status during the July 4th delay.

•Sounds too good to be true but I might try it. The regular Washington ESD number is absolutely useless.

Federal holidays definitely mess things up. Here's what I've noticed with Washington ESD over the past year: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all cause delays. If your normal payment day is Monday and it's a federal holiday, expect Tuesday or Wednesday.

•That's really helpful, thank you! Do you know if Washington state holidays also affect it or just federal ones?

•I think it's mostly federal holidays that matter since the banking system follows those. But Washington ESD offices are closed on state holidays too so that might affect customer service.

HOLIDAYS ARE THE WORST for unemployment payments! Washington ESD acts like we don't need money to eat during holiday weekends. I swear they delay things on purpose sometimes.

•I feel you on this. It's like they forget we have bills that don't take holidays.

•EXACTLY! My rent doesn't care if it's Labor Day weekend, it's still due on the 1st!

The timing is especially bad around Thanksgiving and Christmas when there are multiple days off in a row. My December payments were all over the place last year.

•Oh no, I didn't even think about the end of year holidays. That's going to be rough.

•Yeah plan ahead if you can. Maybe save a little extra from earlier payments to cushion the holiday delays.

Pro tip: always check your Washington ESD account online the day after you file your weekly claim. If there are any issues or delays, you'll see it reflected in your payment history section. Don't just wait for the deposit.

•Good advice! I usually just check my bank account but I should be monitoring the ESD side too.

•Yes! The ESD portal shows processing status before your bank does. Super helpful for planning.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question last month and could never get through. The automated system just keeps you in circles. Anyone have luck reaching an actual person lately?

•Like I mentioned above, I used Claimyr to get through. Before that I was stuck in phone hell for weeks.

•I saw that but wasn't sure if it was legit. The Washington ESD phone situation is so bad I'm willing to try anything at this point.

The holiday delays aren't just Washington ESD's fault though. The whole banking system slows down on federal holidays. My direct deposit from my old job used to get delayed the same way.

Ravi Patel
•Maybe but they could at least warn us about it instead of leaving us guessing.

•True, better communication would help a lot. A simple email saying 'expect delays due to holiday' would be nice.

Check if your bank processes deposits on holidays too. Some credit unions and online banks are faster than big traditional banks even during holiday delays.

Isabella Costa
•I have a credit union, do they usually process faster?

PixelPrincess
•In my experience yes, but every bank is different. Call and ask about their holiday processing schedule.

I keep a spreadsheet tracking my weekly claim dates and payment dates to spot patterns. Holiday weeks are consistently 1-2 days later than normal weeks for Washington ESD payments.

Isabella Costa
•That's really smart! I should start tracking this stuff better.

•It helps with budgeting when you know the delays are coming. Plus you can spot if something is actually wrong vs just a holiday delay.

Memorial Day weekend this year was awful - I didn't get paid until Wednesday when it's usually Monday. Had to borrow money for groceries.

•That sucks, I'm sorry. The timing is always the worst when you need the money most.

•Thanks. Now I try to keep a small emergency fund for holiday delays but it's hard when the payments are barely enough as is.

Washington ESD should really post a holiday payment calendar on their website. Would save everyone so much stress and confusion.

•That's actually a great idea. Most payroll companies do this for employees.

•Right? It's such a simple thing that would help millions of people plan better.

The worst part is when holidays fall on Mondays because that's when most of us expect payments. Tuesday feels like forever when you're broke.

Isabella Costa
•Yes! That's exactly my situation this week. Monday holiday means Tuesday or Wednesday payment.

•Hang in there, it should hit your account soon. Holiday delays are temporary even though they feel endless.

I actually got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. The agent confirmed that federal holidays delay processing by 1-2 business days typically. Might be worth using if you need official confirmation for your specific claim.

Isabella Costa
•Did they charge you a lot to use it?

•I'd rather not say the exact amount but it was worth it to get a real answer instead of guessing about my payments.

Been on unemployment for 8 months and holidays always throw off the schedule. You get used to it but it never stops being stressful when you're living paycheck to paycheck.

•8 months? That's rough. Are you still looking for work or is this a longer-term situation?

•Still looking but the market is tough. The job search requirements for Washington ESD keep me busy at least.

Quick question - do the delays affect everyone or just certain types of claims? I'm on regular UI benefits.
0 coins
Malik Jenkins
•It affects all payments as far as I know. Regular UI, standby, doesn't matter - holidays delay everything.

•Got it, thanks. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something about my claim type.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is always weird too even though it's not an official federal holiday. Some banks treat it like one.

PixelPrincess
•Yeah Black Friday messes with banking schedules even though government offices are usually open.

•Exactly! It's like an unofficial holiday for financial processing.

Does anyone know what happens if your weekly claim filing deadline falls on a holiday? Can you file late without penalty?
0 coins
Emma Johnson
•I think you still have to file by the Sunday deadline regardless of holidays. The filing system stays open even when offices are closed.

Nia Williams
•OK that makes sense. Filing vs payment processing are different systems.

This whole thread is super helpful! I had no idea so many people dealt with the same holiday payment confusion. At least we're not alone in this.

Bottom line: expect 1-2 day delays on any week with a federal holiday. Plan accordingly and don't panic if your payment is late. It's normal and temporary.

I've been dealing with this same issue for months! What I've learned is that Washington ESD follows the federal reserve holiday schedule, so any federal holiday will push your payment back. The frustrating part is they don't send any notifications about delays - you just have to know to expect it. I started setting reminders in my phone for all the federal holidays so I'm not constantly checking my account wondering where my payment is. It's helped reduce the stress a lot, especially during those long holiday weekends when you're already tight on cash.

•That's a really smart strategy with the phone reminders! I never thought to actually calendar the federal holidays to prepare for payment delays. You're right that Washington ESD gives zero heads up about this stuff - it's like they expect us to just magically know when our money will be delayed. I'm definitely going to start doing this, especially with the upcoming holiday season. Thanks for sharing what you've learned!

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now and it's so stressful! I filed my weekly claim on Sunday as usual, but with Monday being a holiday I have no idea when to expect my payment. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really helpful - sounds like Tuesday or Wednesday is realistic to expect. It's frustrating that Washington ESD doesn't give us any advance notice about holiday delays, especially when we're already struggling financially. I'm going to start tracking my payments like some of you suggested and maybe set up those federal holiday reminders too. At least now I know I'm not the only one dealing with this confusion!

•I totally feel your stress about this! The uncertainty is honestly the worst part when you're already dealing with financial pressure. What I've found helpful is checking my Washington ESD account online the morning after I file my claim - you can usually see if the payment is "processed" or "pending" which gives you a better idea of timing than just waiting for your bank deposit. Also, if you haven't already, it might be worth calling your bank to ask about their specific holiday deposit schedule since some process faster than others even during delays. Hang in there - Tuesday/Wednesday sounds about right based on what everyone else is saying!

I just want to say thank you to everyone who shared their experiences here! I was panicking thinking something was wrong with my claim when my payment didn't come on Monday, but reading all your comments about holiday delays has really put my mind at ease. It sounds like this is just a normal part of the process that Washington ESD doesn't bother to explain to us. I'm definitely going to start keeping track of federal holidays and maybe set up those calendar reminders like some of you suggested. It's ridiculous that we have to figure this stuff out ourselves when we're already stressed about money, but at least we have each other to share information. Fingers crossed my payment hits tomorrow!

•You're so welcome! This community really does help when Washington ESD leaves us guessing about everything. I was in the exact same boat a few months ago - payment didn't show up on Monday and I was convinced I'd messed up my claim somehow. It's honestly crazy that they don't just send a simple email saying "Hey, expect delays due to the holiday" but I guess that would be too helpful, right? The tracking and calendar reminder system has been a game changer for my stress levels. Good luck with your payment - based on everyone's experiences here, Tuesday seems pretty likely! Keep us posted on when it hits!

•I'm so glad this thread helped you too! It's honestly ridiculous that we have to rely on each other to figure out basic stuff like payment timing when Washington ESD could easily post this information on their website. I've been unemployed for a few months now and the holiday delays still catch me off guard sometimes. One thing I learned the hard way is to always keep a small buffer if possible - even just $20-30 saved from previous payments can make a huge difference during these holiday weeks. I know it's easier said than done when every dollar counts, but those extra days without payment income can really hurt. Hope your deposit comes through tomorrow! The waiting is always the worst part.
