Will Labor Day affect unemployment benefits payment schedule in Washington?
I'm supposed to get my unemployment benefits this Tuesday but I just realized Labor Day is Monday. Does Washington ESD delay payments when there's a federal holiday? I've been doing my weekly claims on time every week and really need to know if my deposit will be late. This is my first time dealing with a holiday week since I started collecting UI benefits.

Federal holidays don't usually affect Washington ESD payment schedules. Your benefits should deposit on the normal day as long as you filed your weekly claim on time.

•Thanks that's reassuring! I was worried I'd have to wait until Wednesday or something.

I've been collecting for 8 months and holidays have never delayed my payments. Washington ESD uses automated systems that run regardless of bank holidays. Your deposit timing depends more on your bank's processing schedule than the holiday itself.

•Good to know! I bank with Chase so hopefully they process normally too.

•Chase usually processes ACH transfers on holidays as long as it's not a banking holiday specifically

Just make sure you filed your weekly claim before the Sunday deadline. If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD for any reason, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to agents by phone. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Really helped when I had payment issues last month.

•I haven't had issues reaching them yet but good to know there's help if I need it!

•Yeah it worked for me. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

THE GOVERNMENT NEVER CARES ABOUT OUR SCHEDULES! They'll probably delay it just to mess with us. I've been waiting 3 weeks for my adjudication to clear and they don't care about holidays OR weekdays!

•Adjudication delays are different from regular payment processing though. Those are manual reviews that take time regardless of holidays.

•Everything about Washington ESD takes forever! At least other people are getting their money on time.

•Perfect, sounds like I'm worrying for nothing then.

One thing to keep in mind - if you need to contact Washington ESD customer service, they might have modified hours around the holiday. But the automated payment system runs independently of their customer service hours.

•That makes sense. I don't need to call them right now but good to remember for future reference.

•Their customer service is impossible to reach even on normal days anyway lol

I work for a bank and can confirm that ACH transfers (which is how unemployment benefits are paid) typically process on federal holidays unless it's a banking holiday. Labor Day is federal but not banking, so you should be fine.

•Wow that's really helpful insight! Thanks for explaining the difference between federal and banking holidays.

•That's good technical information to know. I never understood the distinction before.

This is exactly the kind of question I had when I first started collecting. You get paranoid about every little thing affecting your payments when you really need the money.

Sergio Neal
•YES exactly! I've been stressed about this all weekend.

•same here when i started, you worry about everything

For what it's worth, I've never seen Washington ESD issue any notices about holiday payment delays. They usually announce if there are going to be any system maintenance issues that might affect payments.

Sergio Neal
•That's a good point. If there were going to be delays they'd probably warn people in advance.

Check your eServices account tomorrow morning if you're really worried. You can see the payment status there even before it hits your bank account.

•Good idea, I'll log in and check first thing tomorrow morning.

Alice Pierce
•Yeah the payment status usually updates before the actual deposit shows up

I'm still waiting for my payment from TWO WEEKS AGO because of some stupid identity verification issue. At least you're getting yours regularly!

Savanna Franklin
•Identity verification issues are really frustrating. Have you tried uploading documents through your eServices account?

Elin Robinson
•I've uploaded everything twice! They just keep asking for more documentation.

•This is exactly when something like Claimyr would help - you could actually talk to someone about what specific documents they need.

In my experience with Washington ESD, the only times payments get delayed are when there are technical issues with their systems or if there's a problem with your specific claim. Holidays don't impact the automated payment processing.

•That's really reassuring to hear from someone with long-term experience. Thanks!

•How long have you been collecting if you don't mind me asking?

•About 10 months now. Lost my job in manufacturing last November and still looking for something comparable.

The only time I had a delay was when my bank had technical issues, not Washington ESD. So even if there is a delay, it might not be on their end.

•Good point. I'll keep that in mind if my deposit seems late.

Just to be thorough - make sure you didn't miss any job search activities in your weekly claim. Sometimes people forget to log activities over holiday weekends and that can flag your claim.

Sergio Neal
•I've been keeping good records in my job search log. Haven't missed any activities.

Savanna Franklin
•That's smart. The job search requirements are pretty strict in Washington.

I remember being worried about this exact same thing during Memorial Day weekend. Payment came through right on schedule. You're probably overthinking it.

Sergio Neal
•You're probably right. I tend to overthink things when money is tight.

•We all do that when we're relying on unemployment benefits. Totally normal.

If you do run into any issues with Washington ESD in the future, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier has been a lifesaver for me. Worth bookmarking claimyr.com just in case.

Thanks for posting this question! I was wondering the same thing but didn't want to seem paranoid by asking.

•No problem! Glad I'm not the only one who was worried about this.
