Holiday payment delay - Will ESD deposit be late because of Wednesday holiday?
Just realized Wednesday is a holiday and I'm freaking out a bit about my unemployment payment. I've been relying on my ESD deposits coming through on time for bills. Does anyone know if my payment will be delayed because of the holiday? I filed my weekly claim on Sunday like usual. This is my first holiday since starting unemployment and I'm not sure how the payment schedule works with holidays. I have rent due Thursday and I'm cutting it close this month. 😟

Yes, holiday will delay direct deposits by one day. ESD processes claims on the next business day after the holiday. So if you normally get paid on Wednesday, you'll likely receive it Thursday instead. Always plan ahead for holidays - here's the 2025 holiday schedule from ESD's website so you can mark your calendar for future reference: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving (and day after), and Christmas.

•Thanks so much! I didn't even think about this until today. That's cutting it super close with my rent due... do you know if there's any way to contact ESD directly to confirm when exactly it'll hit my account? I tried calling but got the usual 'high call volume' message.

happens to all of us the first time lol... banking holidays ALWAYS mess with UI payments. i mark all the fed holidays on my calendar now just to be prepared

•Good idea about marking the calendar. Definitely doing that when I get home tonight!

If you're worried about the timing, you might want to try Claimyr to get through to an ESD agent directly (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last month needing to confirm my payment status before bills were due. Used their service and got through to an agent in about 20 mins instead of spending days trying to call. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent was able to tell me exactly when my deposit would post despite the holiday delay.

•what even is that? never heard of it before. is it legit? seems weird to use a 3rd party just to make a phone call.

•It's legitimate - they basically navigate the phone system and get you in the call queue, then connect you directly with an ESD agent. Saved me hours of frustration with busy signals. I was skeptical too, but it worked when I was desperate to get through.

The same thing happened to me back on Presidents Day!!! I nearly had a panic attack because I was counting on that money for my car payment!!! The ESD system is COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS for not making this clearer to people. They should send notifications about holiday delays instead of leaving us to figure it out. And why can't they just process payments AHEAD of holidays like any reasonable organization would?? The whole system is designed to make things harder for people who are already struggling!!!!!

•They actually do send notifications about holidays in the ESD alerts section of your account dashboard. You can also sign up for text alerts. The banking system itself has limitations on processing ACH transfers during federal holidays, not just ESD.

I think it depends on your bank too. My credit union sometimes processes pending deposits early even with holidays, but major banks usually stick strictly to the next business day rule. You might want to check your bank's policies on pending deposits. Some banks let you see pending transactions before they fully post.

•I have Chase. I just logged into online banking and don't see anything pending yet. Normally it shows as pending the day before it hits my account. I'll keep checking though!

This happens literally every holiday lol. I've been on unemployment a few times over the years and it always throws me off. One time I had to explain to my landlord that the government holiday delayed my payment. Most are understanding if you communicate ahead of time btw

•Good point - I just texted my landlord explaining the situation. He said it's fine if it's a day late. Such a relief!

Just to clarify some confusion in this thread: ESD actually does process claims on schedule, but the ACH banking system that handles the electronic transfers doesn't process any transactions on federal holidays. ESD sends the payment information on schedule, but it sits in the banking system queue until the next business day after the holiday. This affects all direct deposits, not just unemployment benefits.

•Well they SHOULD make exceptions for people who depend on these benefits! Other countries manage to work around holidays for important payments, but here in America it's all about making systems that punish poor people for holidays they don't even get to enjoy because they're too busy worrying about MONEY!!!

did u try checking ur claim status on eServices? sometimes it shows when the payment was processed even if it hasnt hit ur bank yet

•Good idea! I just checked and it shows 'paid' status with yesterday's date, so I guess it's in the banking system now and just waiting for processing after the holiday. That makes me feel better knowing it's not stuck on ESD's end.

my roomate says if you file on saturday instead of sunday the payment sometimes comes through before the holiday. might be worth trying next time there's a holiday coming up

•This is actually a myth. The day you file within your claim week doesn't affect the processing date. ESD begins processing all weekly claims the Monday after your claim week ends, regardless of which day you filed.

UPDATE: Payment just hit my account this morning! Only one day late because of the holiday. Thanks everyone for your help and advice - I'll definitely be marking all the holidays on my calendar for the rest of the year so I'm not caught off guard again!
