Will 4th of July holiday delay ESD unemployment payments?
Just filed my weekly claim yesterday and I'm wondering if there's going to be a payment delay because of the 4th of July being on Tuesday? Last time there was a holiday my payment was 3 days late and I really can't afford that this month. Does anyone know if ESD processes payments on Monday (the 3rd) or will everything be pushed to Wednesday? Really stressing about rent here...

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Did they at least tell you it would be delayed or did you just have to wait and wonder?

In my experience, ESD will process claims filed before the holiday weekend on Monday (July 3rd). However, since the 4th is a federal holiday, any direct deposits won't actually hit bank accounts until Wednesday at the earliest. Debit cards might be a day later. This is because the ACH banking system doesn't process transfers on federal holidays.

•This ⬆️ is the correct answer. I used to work in banking. The ESD offices may be open Monday but the Federal Reserve is closed Tuesday so no payments will process that day.

DEFINITELY expect a delay!! I've been on unemployment since March and EVERY single holiday has caused issues. ESD claims they process on business days but the reality is NOTHING happens when there's a holiday that week. They should honestly warn people about this on the website but of course they don't care if we can't pay bills on time!!!

•While I understand your frustration, ESD does actually note on their website that payments may be delayed due to holidays. It's in the FAQ section under payment information.

I've noticed that claims processed around holidays typically have a 1-2 day delay, but it really depends on your bank too. If you need to speak with ESD about the timing, good luck getting through on the phone next week - holiday weeks are always the worst for call volume. I started using Claimyr (claimyr.com) last month when I had an adjudication issue and needed to talk to someone. They got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it when you're stressed about timing of payments.

•Thanks for the tip! I might need that if my payment doesn't show up by Thursday. Has anyone else used this service before?

To clarify about holiday payment processing: If you filed on Sunday as usual, ESD will likely process the claim on Monday (July 3rd) since their offices are open. However, because July 4th is a federal bank holiday, the ACH transfer won't process until Wednesday, with funds typically appearing in accounts on Thursday. Direct deposit users might see funds Wednesday night, while debit card users typically see funds Thursday morning. If you have automatic payments scheduled, you may want to adjust them accordingly. You can always verify your payment status in your eServices account under the "Payment History" section.

•Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! That helps me plan better. I'll check my payment status on eServices and reschedule some bills just to be safe.

Speaking of holidays my cousin waited nearly a week after thanksgiving for his unemployment money last year and ESD just kept saying "it's processing" when he called. The whole system seems to basically shut down for holidays even though people still need to pay bills!

•That's not quite accurate. ESD processes claims on schedule, but the banking system (Federal Reserve) closes for federal holidays, which delays the actual fund transfers. ESD doesn't control the banking system.

Edited to Add: Thank you everyone!! I knew there was going to be a delay cuz the office will be closed on Tuesday for the holiday, just wasn't sure how much as it's open on Monday. I'll plan for Thursday payment and adjust my bills. Really appreciate all the info!!

Just wanted to add that if you're really worried about the timing, you can also set up text alerts through your bank app to notify you as soon as deposits hit your account. That way you'll know right away when the payment comes through instead of constantly checking. Also, some credit unions are faster than big banks with processing ACH transfers, so if you have options it might be worth considering for future payments. Hope everything works out with your rent situation!
