Does unemployment pay on labor day - NYS Department of Labor payment schedule?

Quick question about Labor Day and my weekly unemployment benefits. I usually get my direct deposit on Tuesdays but next week is Labor Day. Does the NYS Department of Labor still process payments on federal holidays or will everything be delayed? I'm trying to plan my bills and want to make sure I know when to expect my payment. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Federal holidays definitely affect NYS Department of Labor payment processing. If your bank normally processes on Tuesday and Monday is Labor Day, you'll probably see your deposit on Wednesday instead. The state systems don't run automated payments on federal holidays.

Thanks! That's what I was worried about. At least it's just one day delay and not the whole week.

yep same thing happens every holiday, your payment gets pushed back one business day

The NYS Department of Labor follows the state holiday calendar for processing. Labor Day is a state holiday so all automated systems including direct deposits will be delayed by one business day. If you normally receive payment on Tuesday, expect it Wednesday. If you use a debit card for benefits, those might process slightly differently depending on your card provider.

Wait I have the KeyBank debit card for my benefits - does that change anything? I'm always confused about whether the delay is from NYS Department of Labor or the bank.

With the debit card it's usually the same delay. The funds still have to be released from NYS Department of Labor first, then your card gets loaded. So you're looking at Wednesday instead of Tuesday either way.

I had such a hard time reaching anyone at NYS Department of Labor about payment delays last time this happened. Spent hours on hold trying to confirm if my payment was just delayed or if there was actually a problem with my claim. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that connects you directly to unemployment agents without the wait. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to verify my payment status during a holiday week.

How much does that cost though? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment payment lol

It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was way better than spending my whole day trying to get through the regular phone lines when I was stressed about a missing payment.

Labor Day always messes up my budget planning too!! Why can't they just process payments in advance when they know there's gonna be a holiday? Other places manage to do direct deposit early before holidays. The NYS Department of Labor system is so behind the times.

I've been dealing with NYS unemployment for over a year now and holiday delays are just part of the routine unfortunately. Labor Day, Memorial Day, July 4th - they all push payments back one business day. The system is pretty consistent about it though, so at least you can count on Wednesday if Tuesday is your normal day. Pro tip: I always mark holiday weeks on my calendar now so I don't panic when the deposit doesn't show up on the usual day. It's frustrating but predictable once you get used to the pattern.

That's really smart advice about marking the calendar! I'm new to this whole unemployment thing and didn't even think about how holidays would affect payments. Definitely going to start tracking all the federal holidays now so I don't stress out wondering where my money is. Thanks for sharing that tip!
