Will NY unemployment payments be delayed because of Monday's holiday?
Quick question about the President's Day holiday coming up next Monday. This is my first time on unemployment in NY and I'm wondering if my payment will be delayed because of the holiday? I usually get my benefits deposited on Tuesday, but should I expect it on Wednesday this time? Just trying to plan my bills for next week. Thanks!

Yes, your payment will be delayed by one day due to the holiday. Any time there's a federal holiday on Monday, all NY unemployment payments shift by one day. So if you normally get paid on Tuesday, expect it Wednesday instead. This happens for all federal holidays throughout the year, not just President's Day.

I'm also new to NY unemployment and was going to ask the same thing! I have rent due next week and was counting on that Tuesday deposit... do they ever mess up the timing after holidays? I'm so worried something will go wrong and I'll miss my rent payment. Has anyone ever had it delayed MORE than one day after a holiday??

I've been on NY unemployment for 3 months now and they've NEVER been consistent with the timing after holidays. Sometimes it's just one day late but after MLK Day last month mine didn't come until THURSDAY! No explanation, nothing on the website about further delays. The whole system is designed to keep us anxious and desperate. They probably enjoy watching us struggle.

That's not accurate information. The NYSDOL follows a consistent schedule with holiday delays. If your payment was delayed until Thursday after MLK Day, there was likely another issue with your claim that coincided with the holiday. The standard delay is one business day. You can always check your payment status in your online account to see if there are any specific issues with your claim.

This happens every holiday Monday. I've been dealing with NY unemployment on and off since 2025 started, and yes, payments shift by one day when there's a Monday holiday. So if you normally get paid Tuesday, you'll get paid Wednesday. If you normally get paid Wednesday, you'll get paid Thursday, etc.\n\nPro tip: I always mark holidays on my calendar at the beginning of each claim period so I can plan for these payment delays. The main ones that affect unemployment payments are:\n- New Year's Day\n- Martin Luther King Jr. Day\n- President's Day\n- Memorial Day\n- Juneteenth\n- Independence Day\n- Labor Day\n- Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day\n- Veterans Day\n- Thanksgiving\n- Christmas\n\nHope this helps!

I was having trouble getting through to someone at NYSDOL last month about a similar holiday payment question because their phone lines were completely jammed after MLK Day. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration - might be helpful if you ever need to actually speak to someone about your claim and can't get through.

does it actually work? sounds sketchy tbh

It definitely worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for 3 days straight. The way they explained it, they basically keep dialing for you using their system that knows how to navigate all the prompts, then they call you when they get through to an agent queue. Way better than listening to that hold music for hours.

Hi everyone! I'm having a completely different issue with my NY unemployment. I certified on Sunday but my payment status is still showing as \

Yes, the holiday affects all parts of the unemployment processing system, including status updates. Your status will likely update tomorrow instead of today. If it doesn't update by Thursday, then you might want to contact NYSDOL to see if there's a specific issue with your claim.

Thanks! Sorry for going off-topic from the original question. I just saw everyone talking about holidays and payments and thought I'd ask. Will wait until Thursday before I panic!

I just realized I haven't certified for this week yet! Does the certification system still work on holidays or should I wait until Tuesday?

The certification system is available 7 days a week, including holidays. You can still certify on Monday even though it's a holiday. The NYSDOL website recommends claiming weekly benefits on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday for the fastest payment. So you should go ahead and certify as soon as possible!

Thanks everyone for the helpful answers! This community is great - much faster than trying to figure it out from the NYSDOL website. I'll definitely plan for Wednesday payment instead of Tuesday this week.

I've been on NY unemployment for about 6 months now and can confirm the one-day delay rule is pretty reliable. The only time I've seen longer delays is when there are technical issues with their system (which unfortunately does happen sometimes). For peace of mind, I'd suggest setting up text alerts through your bank if you haven't already - that way you'll know immediately when the deposit hits instead of constantly checking your account. Also, most banks will show pending deposits a day early, so you might actually see it showing as pending on Tuesday even though it won't be available until Wednesday. @Alice Coleman - for rent payments, I've found it helpful to talk to my landlord about the holiday schedule at the beginning of each month. Most understanding landlords will work with you on the timing if you give them a heads up about potential delays.

•This is really helpful advice! I'm new to unemployment too and hadn't thought about setting up text alerts with my bank. That's a great tip about seeing pending deposits a day early - would definitely help with the anxiety of waiting. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm also relatively new to the NY unemployment system and this thread has been super informative! I had no idea about the one-day delay rule for federal holidays. One thing I've learned that might help others - if you're ever unsure about payment timing, you can actually check the "Payment History" section in your NY.gov unemployment account. It shows not just past payments but also any scheduled payments with their expected dates. During holiday weeks, it usually updates to show the delayed date. Also, for anyone worried about missing rent or bills due to the delay - many utility companies and even some landlords have policies for unemployment recipients that allow for a few days grace period if you explain the situation. Worth asking about if you're cutting it close!

•That's really good to know about the Payment History section showing scheduled payments with updated dates during holidays! I didn't realize it would automatically adjust to show the delayed timing - that would definitely help with planning. And thanks for the tip about asking utility companies and landlords about grace periods for unemployment recipients. I'm fortunately not cutting it that close this month, but it's good information to have for the future. This community has been so helpful for learning all these little details that aren't obvious when you're new to the system!

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for about a year now and can add that the one-day delay is pretty consistent, but there's one thing to watch out for - if the holiday falls on a Tuesday, your payment timing might get a bit more complicated depending on when you normally receive benefits. Also, I've noticed that the NYSDOL website sometimes doesn't update their "next payment date" display until the day after the holiday, so don't panic if you log in on Tuesday and it still shows the old date. The payment will still come through on the adjusted schedule even if the website is slow to update. Just wanted to mention this since I see a few people are new to the system and every little bit of info helps when you're trying to plan your budget around these delays!

•Thanks for that additional insight about Tuesday holidays potentially causing more complicated timing! I hadn't thought about how the day of the week the holiday falls on might affect things differently. That's a really good point about the website being slow to update the "next payment date" too - I can see how that would cause unnecessary panic for people who are already stressed about their finances. As someone who's brand new to this whole system, I really appreciate everyone sharing these detailed experiences and tips. It's so much more helpful than trying to decode the official NYSDOL website on your own!

I've been on NY unemployment for about 8 months now and can confirm everything others have said about the one-day delay for federal holidays. What I'd add is that it's worth noting this delay applies to ALL types of unemployment benefits in NY - regular UI, PUA, PEUC, etc. One thing that really helped me was creating a simple spreadsheet at the start of my claim period with all the federal holidays marked and my expected payment dates adjusted accordingly. It takes maybe 10 minutes to set up but saves so much stress throughout the year. Also, if you're someone who gets anxious about money (like I definitely am!), I found it helpful to treat the holiday-delayed payment as my "normal" payment date in my mental budget. So instead of thinking "my payment is late," I just plan for Wednesday as my payment day during holiday weeks. Makes the whole thing feel less stressful. @Lydia Bailey - you mentioned this is your first time on unemployment, so just wanted to say welcome to the community! Everyone here is super helpful when questions come up.

•Thank you so much for the warm welcome and all the practical advice! I love the idea of creating a spreadsheet with all the holidays marked and adjusted payment dates - that sounds like it would really help with the mental planning aspect. And you're absolutely right about just mentally shifting to treat the delayed date as the "normal" payment day during holiday weeks. I can already tell that mindset adjustment would reduce a lot of unnecessary stress. This community has been incredibly helpful for someone just starting out with the NY unemployment system. Everyone has shared such detailed, practical tips that you just don't get from the official resources. Really grateful for all the insights!

I've been receiving NY unemployment benefits for about 4 months now and wanted to share another helpful tip for newcomers - if you use direct deposit, most banks will actually show you the exact time your deposit is scheduled to arrive (usually early morning, around 3-6 AM). During holiday weeks, this timing stays the same, it just shifts to the next business day. Also, I keep a simple note in my phone with all the federal holidays listed so I can quickly check if any given week will have a delay. It's saved me from that Sunday night panic of "wait, is my payment going to be on time this week?" The NY unemployment system definitely has its quirks, but the holiday delay pattern is one of the few things that's actually pretty predictable once you know about it!

•That's such a practical tip about checking with your bank for the exact deposit timing! I had no idea most banks would show you the scheduled arrival time. That would definitely help eliminate the guesswork about when to expect it during holiday weeks. And keeping a simple list of federal holidays in your phone is brilliant - I'm definitely going to do that. It's amazing how these little organizational tricks can make such a big difference in reducing stress when you're dealing with unemployment. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I've been on NY unemployment for about 2 months and can confirm the one-day delay is standard for all federal holidays. One thing that really helped me was setting up account alerts through the NY.gov portal - you can get email notifications when your payment status changes, which gives you peace of mind during holiday weeks. Also wanted to mention that if you're ever worried about the timing, you can call your bank's automated phone line (not the unemployment office) to check if any deposits are pending. Most banks will tell you about incoming ACH transfers even before they show up in your online account. The NY system is definitely confusing at first, but the holiday schedule is actually one of the more reliable aspects once you get used to it. Just remember: federal holiday on Monday = everything shifts one day later!

•That's really helpful about setting up the email notifications through the NY.gov portal! I didn't even know that was an option. And the tip about calling your bank's automated line to check for pending ACH transfers is genius - that would definitely help with the anxiety of waiting and wondering. I'm still pretty new to all of this and it's reassuring to hear from someone who's been through a few holiday cycles that the timing really is predictable once you know the pattern. Thanks for sharing these practical tips!

I'm also new to NY unemployment and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I was actually stressing about this exact same thing earlier today when I realized Monday is a holiday. It's such a relief to know it's just a standard one-day delay and not something more complicated. I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and tips - especially the suggestions about setting up bank alerts and keeping track of holidays in advance. Coming from someone who's never had to navigate unemployment benefits before, all these practical details make such a huge difference in understanding what to expect. Thanks to the original poster for asking this question - I'm sure there are other newcomers like us who were wondering the same thing!
