Will NY unemployment payment be delayed because of Labor Day 2025?
Does anyone know if our NY unemployment payments will be delayed because of Labor Day? I normally get my payment deposited on Tuesday, but I'm wondering if the holiday will push it to Wednesday this year. Need to plan my bills accordingly. Thanks!

Yep, Labor Day usually pushes everything back by a day. If you normally get paid Tuesday, expect it Wednesday this week.

Thanks! Just wanted to make sure. My rent is due and I need to time everything right.

Yes, all NY unemployment payments that would normally process on Monday (Labor Day) will be delayed by one business day. This happens with all federal holidays when banks are closed. The NYSDOL systems still process claims on schedule, but the actual bank transfer can't happen until the next business day. If you normally receive your payment on Tuesday, you'll receive it on Wednesday this week.

It happens for all federal holidays when banks are closed. For 2025, that includes New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Any payment that would process on these days is delayed until the next business day.

I had the same problem last year and couldn't get through to anyone at unemployment to confirm. The wait times were INSANE! I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to a NYSDOL agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE if you need to talk to someone directly. Their website is claimyr.com and they basically call and wait on hold for you, then call you when an agent is ready. Saved me so much stress!

Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly. Has anyone else tried this??

I've used Claimyr twice. It works exactly as described. They don't have any special connections - they just do the waiting for you. Definitely worth it when you absolutely need to talk to someone.

its always like this every holiday. system is so stupid why cant they just plan for this stuff ahead of time??????????? last memorial day i had to wait TWO EXTRA DAYS and my landlord was NOT happy!!!

The delay isn't actually NYSDOL's fault - it's because the Federal Reserve and banks don't process ACH transfers on federal holidays. Even if NYSDOL wanted to send the money, there's no way for them to do it when the banking system is closed.

yeah well they should TELL US THAT in big letters on the website!!! not everyone knows how banks work!!!

This is my first time on unemployment and im so confused about everything lol. Do we still have to certify on the holiday or can we wait till tuesday?

You should still certify during your regular certification window (Sunday-Saturday), regardless of holidays. The certification system is available 7 days a week. The holiday only affects when payments are processed and deposited.

I'm really worried about this delay too. What if it's more than one day? Last Christmas my payment was delayed by THREE days and I nearly missed my car payment. Does anyone know if there's a way to see exactly when the payment will arrive? My UI account just says

Generally, holiday delays are only one business day, but in rare cases where multiple holidays fall close together (like Christmas and New Year's), it can be longer. Unfortunately, there's no precise tracking system in the NY unemployment portal that shows the exact deposit date. The best approach is to plan for a one-day delay for each holiday.

All these government services are THE WORST at holidays!!! Not just unemployment but food stamps, disability, ALL OF IT. They never plan ahead and we're always the ones who suffer. My cousin works for the state (not unemployment) and says it's because their computer systems are from the 1990s!!!!

Yeah, it's frustrating. I just wish they'd at least send a notification or something to let us know about the delay instead of making us guess.

When I was waiting for my payment earlier this year after Presidents Day, I called my bank to see if there was a pending deposit. Sometimes banks can see pending ACH transfers before they post to your account. Might be worth a try if you're anxious about when it's coming.

That's really helpful, thanks! I'll try calling my bank tomorrow to check.

To summarize what everyone has said: Yes, if you normally get paid on Tuesday, your payment will come on Wednesday this week due to Labor Day. This is standard for all federal holidays. Your certification schedule doesn't change, just the payment processing. And remember, you can always see your payment history and status by logging into your NY.gov account and checking your payment history screen.

I'm new to this whole unemployment thing and this thread has been super helpful! Just wanted to add that I called my bank last week about a different delayed payment and they told me that most ACH deposits from government agencies typically post between 2-4 AM on the business day they're processed. So if your payment is delayed to Wednesday, you'll probably see it early Wednesday morning rather than having to wait all day. Hope this helps someone else who's stressing about timing like I was!

•That's really good to know about the early morning timing! I've been checking my account obsessively all day when payments are due, so knowing it usually happens around 2-4 AM will definitely help me sleep better instead of staying up refreshing my banking app. Thanks for sharing that detail - it's the kind of practical info that makes a huge difference when you're living paycheck to paycheck on unemployment.

Just went through this exact situation during Memorial Day weekend earlier this year. The one-day delay is pretty standard, but what really helped me was setting up text alerts through my bank so I got notified the moment the deposit hit my account. Most banks offer this service for free and it saved me from constantly checking my balance. Also, if you're really tight on timing with bills, some utility companies and landlords are understanding about holiday delays if you call and explain - I've had success getting a one-day grace period when I showed them it was due to a government holiday affecting my unemployment payment.

•That's such great advice about the text alerts! I never thought to set those up but it makes perfect sense - way better than obsessively checking my account every hour. And the tip about calling utility companies is really smart too. I was stressing about my electric bill that's due Thursday, but you're right that most companies are pretty understanding about government payment delays if you just explain the situation. Thanks for the practical tips from someone who's been through this before!

Thanks everyone for all this helpful info! I'm also new to unemployment and was panicking about the Labor Day delay. @Fatima Al-Sayed that tip about the 2-4 AM deposit timing is a lifesaver - I've been losing sleep checking my account at random times. And @Jamal Harris, I'm definitely setting up those text alerts right now. It's crazy how these little details aren't explained anywhere official but make such a huge difference when you're trying to budget on unemployment. Really appreciate this community looking out for each other!
