EDD payment delayed because of MLK holiday - will benefits still arrive on Monday?

Hey everyone, I'm confused about the EDD payment schedule with the MLK holiday coming up. My certifications usually process on Sunday and my Money Network card gets loaded on Monday. Since Monday is a federal holiday, will my unemployment payment still hit my account on Monday or will it be delayed until Tuesday? I've got rent due and need to know if I should warn my landlord about a possible delay. Anyone know how EDD handles holiday payments?

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. My landlord is super strict about late payments so I better let him know.

Honestly I think it depends on your bank!!! My payments sometimes still hit on holidays and sometimes don't. Anyone else notice it being different with direct deposit vs the Money Network card??

yep money network is always slower for me even on regular days, direct deposit to my credit union is wayyy faster

Most EDD payments will be delayed by one business day when there's a federal holiday. If you normally get paid on Monday, you'll likely see it Tuesday. However, this only affects the deposit timing - your certification and claim status won't be impacted. The processing still happens on Sunday night, but the banking system can't complete the transfer on a holiday. If you need to be 100% sure about your specific payment, you should try calling EDD directly. The recording will often have holiday schedule information.

I tried calling EDD about this exact issue last month around Christmas and kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message before getting disconnected. Spent HOURS trying to get through. So frustrating!!!!

From my experience with EDD over the past few years, payment processing works like this during holidays: 1. Certification processing still happens on Sunday night as normal 2. The payment will show as "paid" in UI Online by Monday morning 3. The actual deposit to your Money Network card or bank account will typically arrive Tuesday morning The EDD system itself works 24/7, but the banking/ACH transfer system observes federal holidays. So while your payment is approved and ready, the actual money transfer is delayed by one business day. Hope that helps with your planning!

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! That makes perfect sense. I'll definitely plan for Tuesday then.

I had this EXACT same problem last month during the Christmas holiday! I certified on Sunday like normal but my payment didn't hit until WEDNESDAY!!! I called EDD literally 47 times on Tuesday when my money didn't show up and couldn't get through to anyone. Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an EDD rep in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They have this cool demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD agent confirmed that holiday delays can sometimes take 2-3 business days depending on your bank and payment method. At least I wasn't disqualified or anything!

Everyone saying tuesday but my payments never come through during holiday weeks until wednesday sometimes even thursday. And EDD never explains why some people get it earlier than others. The system is so unpredictable! 😡

RIGHT?! I've been on unemployment three times in the past few years and the payment timing is NEVER consistent during holiday weeks. I wish they'd just post a clear schedule somewhere!

Just a quick update for everyone - I checked the EDD website and they've posted a notice saying that payments will be processed as normal but banking transfers will be delayed by one business day due to the federal holiday. So if you normally get paid Monday, expect Tuesday. If you normally get Tuesday, expect Wednesday, etc. You can always check your UI Online account to see if the payment shows as "paid" which means it's been approved and is just waiting for the bank transfer.

Thank you for checking! I just looked at my UI Online and my last certification is showing "paid" for the correct amount, so it sounds like I just need to wait for the transfer to complete tomorrow. That's a relief!
