EDD payments delayed due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day? When will benefits hit accounts?

So I'm freaking out a little because my UI payment normally hits my account every Monday morning and it's already 10am with nothing in my account. Then I just realized today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day (federal holiday). Does anyone know if this means our EDD payments will be delayed until tomorrow? My landlord isn't the most understanding person and I promised the rent would be caught up today. Really hoping the money comes through somehow! Has anyone received their payment today despite the holiday?

Yes, bank holidays will delay your payment processing by one business day. Since MLK Day is a federal holiday, most financial institutions don't process ACH transfers today. Your payment will most likely show up tomorrow morning. This happens with all banking holidays throughout the year - Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, etc.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Do you know if this applies to the Money Network card too or just direct deposit? I switched to direct deposit a few months ago but wondering if I should switch back to the card if payments are faster.

Really?? That's interesting. I was on the debit card before but switched to direct deposit thinking it would be faster. Maybe I made the wrong choice!

This is a common question around holidays. Here's how it works: - If you're using direct deposit: Payments will be delayed by one business day due to the federal holiday. Banks don't process ACH transfers on federal holidays. - If you're using the Money Network debit card: Sometimes these payments still process on holidays, but it's not guaranteed and depends on when EDD sent the payment instruction. For future reference, always plan for potential delays around federal holidays. The EDD system might certify and approve your payment on schedule, but the actual money transfer can be affected by banking holidays.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I'll definitely plan better for future holidays. Guess I need to call my landlord and explain the situation.

EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY this happens and EDD never warns anyone!!! They should put a big notice on the website or send a text warning people about holiday delays. Some of us have bills due and can't just wait an extra day. I've had utilities shut off before because of these surprise delays. The system is designed to make everything harder for people who are already struggling!

My certification cleared yesterday but no money yet too. Called EDD this morning and actually got through after using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They confirmed payments are delayed due to the holiday and said to expect it tomorrow. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - was honestly worth it just to get a clear answer instead of stressing all day!

Only waited about 15 minutes total. The service basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through. Way better than trying to call myself like 30 times in a row and getting the 'too many callers' message.

Just to add some confusion to this thread - I'm on direct deposit and mine DID come through today despite the holiday. But my husband's is still pending and we certified at the same time yesterday. So I think it might depend on your bank too? We use different banks. Very inconsistent system!

That's a good point - some banks might still process incoming ACH transfers on holidays even though they don't initiate outgoing ones. It's definitely bank-dependent. The Money Network card can also be faster in some cases since it's an internal transfer within their system rather than going through the ACH network.

MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is today this year. It's a federal holiday, so government offices and banks are closed.
