When do you get your waiting week unemployment payment in Washington ESD?
I filed my initial unemployment claim about 6 weeks ago and have been filing my weekly claims every week since then. My first week was marked as my waiting week, but I still haven't received any payment for it. I thought the waiting week was supposed to be paid out eventually? When does Washington ESD actually pay you for that first waiting week? My claim has been approved and I've been getting my regular weekly benefits, but that first week is still showing as unpaid in my account.

The waiting week gets paid at the very end of your benefit year, assuming you don't have any disqualifications or overpayments. So if your benefit year runs for the full 26 weeks, you'd get that waiting week payment after your last regular weekly claim.

•Oh wow, so I have to wait the entire benefit year? That seems like a really long time to wait for one week's worth of benefits.

•Yeah I know it's frustrating but that's how Washington ESD does it. It's basically their way of making sure you complete your full claim period without issues.

Wait, I thought they got rid of the waiting week completely? My friend filed last year and said she got paid for her first week right away.

•No, the waiting week is still in effect for regular UI claims in Washington. Your friend might have been on a different type of claim or filed during a different period.

•Hmm maybe she was thinking of the pandemic benefits? Those worked differently I think.

Actually, there are some exceptions where the waiting week can be waived. If you're laid off due to a natural disaster or certain other qualifying events, Washington ESD might waive it. But for most regular layoffs, you do have to serve the waiting week.

•I was just laid off because my company downsized. Nothing special about it, so I guess I'm stuck waiting until the end.

•Same situation here. It's really annoying having to wait a whole year for that money when you need it most at the beginning.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD to even ask about this. Spent hours on hold multiple times just to ask basic questions about my claim. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent in like 15 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Definitely worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your waiting week or any other claim issues.

•Really? I've been trying to get through for weeks. How much does something like that cost?

•They focus on the value of actually reaching an agent rather than spending all day calling. Way better than the endless busy signals and disconnections I was getting before.

•I'm skeptical of services like that but honestly after calling Washington ESD 50+ times with no luck, I might try anything at this point.

The waiting week thing is so stupid. Like why make people wait even longer when they're already struggling financially? Makes no sense.

•totally agree!! it's like they want to make it as hard as possible to get help

•The waiting week serves as a deterrent to prevent people from filing frivolous claims. It's been a standard part of unemployment systems for decades.

•Still seems punitive to people who genuinely need help though.

I'm on week 12 of my claim and just realized I never got my waiting week either. Should I be worried that there's something wrong with my claim?
0 coins
Hannah White
•No, that's completely normal. As long as your other weekly claims are processing correctly, the waiting week will just sit there until the end of your benefit year.

•Ok good, I was starting to panic that I had messed something up in my initial filing.

Does anyone know if you can get the waiting week paid early if you find a job before your benefit year ends?
0 coins
Mateo Silva
•No, if you return to work and stop filing weekly claims, you forfeit the waiting week payment. It only gets paid if you complete your full benefit year or exhaust all your benefits.

Evelyn Martinez
•Wow that seems really unfair. So there's actually a penalty for finding work quickly?

Benjamin Carter
•Yeah it's messed up. The system doesn't really incentivize getting back to work fast.

I remember my waiting week showing up as paid randomly one day near the end of my claim period last year. I wasn't expecting it and suddenly had an extra deposit. Was a nice surprise!

Nick Kravitz
•That gives me hope! Did you have to do anything special or did it just automatically process?

Maya Lewis
•Completely automatic. I think it was around week 24 or 25 of my claim when it finally showed up as paid.

This whole waiting week thing is why I always tell people to have some savings before they need unemployment. The system is designed to make you wait for everything.

•Easy to say when you have the luxury of savings. Not everyone can put money aside when they're living paycheck to paycheck.

•Fair point. I just meant it as general advice, not trying to shame anyone.

Can you collect the waiting week if you only work part time and are still eligible for partial benefits?
0 coins
Mateo Silva
•Yes, as long as you're still filing weekly claims and haven't returned to full-time work, the waiting week should eventually be paid when you reach the end of your benefit year.

•Good to know, thanks. I've been working part time but still filing because my hours got cut so much.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got through to ask about my waiting week. The agent confirmed it won't be paid until the very end, but at least now I know for sure. Definitely recommend it if you need to verify anything about your claim status.

What happens if Washington ESD makes an error and overpays you during your claim period? Do you still get the waiting week?
0 coins
Mateo Silva
•If there's an overpayment that needs to be recovered, they'll typically deduct it from future payments including the waiting week payment. So you might get a reduced waiting week payment or no payment at all depending on the overpayment amount.

•That's what I was afraid of. Hopefully my claim stays clean through the end.

My benefit year is about to end next month and I'm excited to finally get that waiting week payment! It's been 25 weeks of wondering when it would show up.

•Let us know when it comes through! I'm curious to see if it happens automatically or if you have to do anything special.

Does the waiting week payment come as a separate deposit or is it included with your final weekly claim?
0 coins
Maya Lewis
•For me it was a separate deposit that came a few days after my last regular weekly claim. Showed up as its own transaction.

•Thanks! Good to know what to expect when I get there.

I think the waiting week policy is outdated and should be eliminated. Other states have gotten rid of it entirely.

•Which states don't have waiting weeks? Might be useful to know for people considering relocating for work.

•I know New York eliminated theirs a few years ago. Not sure about others off the top of my head.

•Most states still have waiting weeks. It's pretty standard across the country, though the specific rules vary.

Just wanted to add that I finally got through to Washington ESD using Claimyr too after seeing it mentioned here. Really helped clear up my confusion about when the waiting week gets paid. Much easier than the endless phone tree.

Quick question - if I exhaust all my regular benefits before the 26 weeks, do I still get the waiting week paid?
0 coins
Mateo Silva
•Yes, if you exhaust your benefits early, the waiting week should be paid along with your final payment. You don't have to wait the full 26 weeks in that case.

Lauren Johnson
•That's a relief. I'm getting close to exhausting mine and was worried I'd lose that week entirely.

The whole unemployment system feels designed to discourage people from using it. Between the waiting week, job search requirements, and constant verification requests, it's exhausting.

Caleb Stone
•I feel this so much. Like they want you to give up and just not claim benefits.

Daniel Price
•Unfortunately that's probably part of the design. Reduce costs by making it difficult to access.

For what it's worth, once you understand how the waiting week works, it's pretty straightforward. Just think of it as your last week's payment instead of your first week's payment.

Nick Kravitz
•That's actually a helpful way to think about it. Makes it feel less like they're withholding money and more like delayed payment.

•Good perspective. Still annoying but at least it makes sense when you frame it that way.
