What is a waiting week unemployment - Washington ESD won't pay first week?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about something called a 'waiting week.' My claim was approved but they're telling me I won't get paid for my first week of unemployment. Is this normal? I thought if you qualified for benefits you got paid right away. Can someone explain what a waiting week is and why Washington ESD does this? I really need that money for rent.

Yes, Washington has a waiting week requirement. It's basically an unpaid week that serves as a waiting period before your benefits start. You file your weekly claim for that first week but don't receive payment for it. It's been this way for years - think of it as a one-week deductible.

•That's so frustrating! Why do they make people wait when they're already struggling financially?

•I think it's supposed to discourage people from filing claims for very short periods of unemployment, but it definitely hurts when you need the money immediately.

The waiting week is required by Washington state law (RCW 50.20.010). You still need to file your weekly claim for that week and meet all requirements like job search, but you won't receive payment. However, if you're on unemployment for an extended period, you might be able to get that waiting week paid at the end of your benefit year under certain circumstances.

•What circumstances would allow you to get paid for the waiting week later?

•If you exhaust all your regular benefits and meet certain requirements, Washington ESD may pay the waiting week. But it's not guaranteed - you'd need to check with them directly.

I was so confused about this too when I first filed. Had to call Washington ESD multiple times to understand it. If you're having trouble getting through to them, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made it so much easier to get my questions answered.

•How does that work? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days with no luck.

•They basically handle the calling for you and get you connected when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through the busy signals.

the waiting week is such BS honestly. like you lose your job and then they make you wait even longer for money. i get that its the law but it seems designed to make life harder for unemployed people

•I understand the frustration, but the waiting week has been part of unemployment systems in most states for decades. It's meant to ensure people are genuinely unemployed and not just taking a brief break.

•still seems unfair when people are already struggling to pay bills

Just to clarify - you DO need to file your weekly claim for the waiting week. Don't skip it thinking you won't get paid anyway. Washington ESD needs that filing to establish your claim properly and track your job search activities.

•Good point! I almost didn't file it since I knew I wouldn't get paid. Thanks for the reminder.

•Yeah I made that mistake on my first claim years ago and it messed up my whole benefit calculation.

Does the waiting week apply to everyone or are there exceptions? I'm wondering if it's different for people who were laid off vs. quit their jobs.

•The waiting week applies to all unemployment claims in Washington, regardless of the reason for separation. However, if you quit your job, you might face additional issues beyond just the waiting week - like a disqualification period.

•I was laid off due to lack of work, so I should be okay on that front. Just dealing with the waiting week frustration.

I remember when I first filed in 2023, I thought there was an error in my account when I didn't get paid for my first week. Spent forever trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask about it. Turns out it was just the normal waiting week process.

•That's exactly what I thought too! I was worried something was wrong with my claim.

•Washington ESD really should make this clearer in their initial communications. Would save people a lot of confusion and unnecessary calls.

For planning purposes, remember that even after the waiting week, there's usually a processing delay. So you might not see your first actual payment until 2-3 weeks after filing your initial claim. Budget accordingly if possible.

•Ugh, so it could be almost a month before I see any money? This is going to be really tight financially.

•Check if you qualify for any emergency assistance programs in your county while you're waiting for unemployment benefits to start.

Question - if I start working again during my waiting week, does that affect anything? Like if I pick up a temporary gig?

Maggie Martinez
•Yes, you need to report any work and earnings during your waiting week just like any other week. If you earn too much, it could affect your ongoing eligibility for benefits.

•Good to know. I'll make sure to report everything accurately on my weekly claim.

Another tip - if you have questions about how the waiting week affects your specific situation, don't waste time trying to call Washington ESD directly. I used Claimyr again last month for a different issue and they got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. Much better than the 3+ hours I usually spend on hold.

•Is that service legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

•I was skeptical too but it worked exactly as advertised. They don't ask for any personal info - just help you get connected to Washington ESD directly.

The waiting week is one of those unemployment rules that catches everyone off guard the first time. I've been through this process twice now and it still feels unfair, but at least I know what to expect.

•Washington ESD mentions it in their handbook, but honestly, who reads all that when you're stressed about losing your job?

wait so if i file my claim this week, i wont get paid for this week but i will get paid for next week? or is there more delay?

•You won't get paid for your first week (the waiting week), but you should get paid for your second week of unemployment, assuming your claim is approved and you meet all requirements. There might be a few days processing delay though.

I wish Washington would eliminate the waiting week like some other states have done. It's 2025 and people need help immediately when they lose their jobs, not after jumping through bureaucratic hoops.

•completely agree. the system feels designed to discourage people from getting help they legally qualify for

•While I understand the frustration, the waiting week does serve some administrative purposes in managing the unemployment system. But policy changes would need to go through the state legislature.

Does anyone know if the waiting week affects your total benefit amount? Like, do you get fewer total weeks of benefits because of it?
0 coins
Maggie Martinez
•No, the waiting week doesn't reduce your total number of benefit weeks. If you're eligible for 26 weeks of benefits, you'll still get 26 weeks of payments - just not for that first waiting week.

•That's a relief at least. Thanks for clarifying that!

Pro tip: use the waiting week to get ahead on your job search activities. Since you have to do the job search anyway but won't be getting paid, it's a good time to really focus on applications and networking without the pressure of also managing benefit payments.

•That's actually good advice. I'll try to see it as a productive week rather than just a frustrating delay.

•I did the same thing - used my waiting week to update my resume and LinkedIn profile. Made the most of the time.

If you're really struggling financially during the waiting week, check with local food banks and churches. Many have emergency assistance programs that can help bridge the gap until your unemployment benefits start.

Just went through this whole process myself. The waiting week is annoying but it's just one week. Focus on getting your weekly claims filed correctly and staying on top of your job search requirements. The benefits will start flowing soon enough.

•You'll get through it! The first few weeks are always the most stressful until you get into a routine with the system.

For anyone still confused about Washington ESD processes, I had good luck getting clarification through that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Really helped me understand the timeline and requirements without spending all day on hold.

Bottom line: the waiting week is a pain but it's standard in Washington. File your weekly claim, do your job search, and your first payment should come the following week. Don't let it stress you out too much - it's just how the system works.
