Do you get paid for the waiting week on unemployment in Washington ESD?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about this waiting week thing. My claim was approved but I'm not seeing any payment for my first week. Do I eventually get paid for that waiting week or is it just lost money? I heard different things from different people and the ESD website isn't super clear about it. Really need to know because I'm already behind on bills.

Washington eliminated the waiting week requirement back in 2018, so you should get paid for all eligible weeks including your first week. If you're not seeing payment for your first week, there might be an issue with your claim that needs to be resolved.

•Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear. So if I'm not getting paid for that first week, something is definitely wrong then?

•Exactly. You should contact Washington ESD to find out why that first week payment is missing. Could be a simple processing delay or there might be an adjudication issue.

Yeah Washington got rid of the waiting week a few years ago. But I've noticed sometimes there's still delays in getting that first payment processed. Mine took like 2 weeks to show up even though my claim was approved.

•How long should I wait before I start worrying? It's been about 10 days since I filed my first weekly claim.

•I'd give it another week, but if you're really concerned you could try calling ESD to check on it.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about your missing first week payment, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected with an agent. They have this system that calls ESD for you and gets you through the phone queue. Saved me hours of trying to call myself. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm a little nervous about using third-party services for my unemployment stuff.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through to ESD's phone system faster. You still talk directly to the ESD agent yourself, they just handle the calling and waiting part.

•I used Claimyr too when I had an adjudication issue. Worked great and saved me so much time trying to get through those busy phone lines.

•It was changed in 2018. Washington was one of the first states to eliminate the waiting week requirement completely.

•damn no wonder i was confused. i haven't been on unemployment since like 2016 and back then you definitely didn't get paid for the first week

Just to clarify for anyone reading this - Washington ESD pays for ALL eligible weeks as long as your claim is approved and you meet the weekly eligibility requirements. There's no unpaid waiting week anymore. If you're missing payment for any week you filed for, that's a problem that needs to be addressed.

•This is really helpful. So I should definitely follow up about my missing first week payment then.

•Absolutely. Don't let it slide - you're entitled to that payment if you were eligible that week.

I'm dealing with the same issue right now! Filed my claim 3 weeks ago, got approved, but still no payment for my first week. Been trying to call ESD for days but keep getting disconnected.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular ESD phone lines are impossible to get through to sometimes.

•How much does Claimyr cost? Is it worth it just to check on one missing payment?

•For me it was totally worth it because I was spending hours every day trying to call. Plus when you're missing unemployment payments, every day counts.

Maybe there's an issue with your job separation that's holding up the first week? Sometimes ESD needs to verify details about why you became unemployed before they release payments.

•I was laid off due to downsizing, so it should be pretty straightforward. My employer didn't contest the claim either.

•That does sound straightforward. Probably just a processing delay then, but worth checking on.

Another thing to check - make sure you actually filed a weekly claim for that first week. I know it sounds obvious but I've seen people miss filing for their first week and then wonder where the payment is.

•Yeah I definitely filed for it. I can see it in my account as 'processed' but no payment amount.

•If it shows as processed with no payment amount, that's definitely a red flag. Something's not right there.

This whole thread is making me feel better about Washington's unemployment system. In some states you still lose that first week of benefits completely. Glad Washington got rid of that stupid rule.

•Yeah Washington has been pretty progressive about unemployment benefits compared to a lot of other states.

•Definitely. Now if they could just make their phone system easier to get through to...

OP - definitely follow up on this. I had a similar issue where my first week payment was delayed because there was a flag on my account that needed manual review. Once I got through to an agent, they cleared it up same day and I got the payment within 2 days.

•How did you finally get through to someone? Regular phone number or did you use that Claimyr thing others mentioned?

•I used Claimyr actually. Tried calling myself for like 2 weeks with no luck, then used their service and got connected within an hour.

Just want to add - keep track of all your weekly claims and payments. If there are delays or missing payments, having good records makes it much easier to get things sorted out with ESD.

•Good point. I've been taking screenshots of everything just in case.

Has anyone had luck with the online messaging system instead of calling? Sometimes that works better than trying to get through on the phone.

Paige Cantoni
•The online messaging can work for some issues, but for payment problems I've found calling is usually faster.

•Fair enough. The phone system is just so frustrating though.

•That's why services like Claimyr exist - to deal with that frustrating phone system for you.

I'm curious - does Washington pay the waiting week retroactively if you filed before 2018? Or is that just for new claims after they changed the rule?

Paige Cantoni
•The elimination of the waiting week only applies to claims filed after the rule change in 2018. Claims filed before that would still have had the unpaid waiting week.

•That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

Update: I ended up using Claimyr like several people suggested and got through to an ESD agent this morning. Turns out there was a verification flag on my account that was holding up the first week payment. The agent cleared it and said I should see the payment in 2-3 business days. Thanks everyone for the help!
